Chapter 50: To Stay, To Leave, To Want Anyway

Start from the beginning

"I mean he did hurt me, just like you said, I'm only human and humans love petty revenge" I say with a smirk.

"Speaking of, why didn't you even tell me about Y/N and Yoongi when Joon already told you that they're our soulmates? I had to find it out in my office? Really?"

I sigh. "Did you really have to make me look like a deer in headlights? You could have prepared me. What a shit fiancé."

She laughs out loud at that, genuinely, her shoulders shaking, definitely enjoying this.

"Okay okay, to be perfectly clear with you and I'm not just saying this to defend myself okay" her words come out staggered as she recovers from her laugh.

"I had no idea that's how these soulmate connections work, I haven't even met mine! I haven't even activated my profile. So when Joon told me that they're HIS soulmates, I didn't wanna assume they were yours too!" she raises her arms in defense.

"I was actually worried that he has soulmates other than you so I had to know first! I had to be sure! I didn't want to hurt you!" Dara continues, holding her fork and knife as it waves in the air with her gestures.

I stared at her blankly and looked at her in the eyes at that before I asked "Okay. And so, were you sure already when you handed them to me at my office?"

She looks away and then looked at the ceiling then her right and then she proceeded to cut her brocolli into little tiny pieces.

"Oops" she whispers, not even looking at me.

I chuckle at her "It's fine. I believe you."

She raises her head at me with a smug smile, proud of herself for getting out alive from this.

But then I continue "And by the way, board meeting my ass. Your secretary told me you were at a golf range, playing."

She grins "Hey it's believable. It was a good plan. I couldn't be there, my presence would ruin the entire thing!"

I glance at her, this woman who has been by my side my entire life, who has always been the only person to understand the weight of the world we were born into.

I murmur-softer, more genuine-
"Thank you, Dara. I mean it"

She blinks.
Then-she smiles.
Because she knows.

She knows I don't say it often.
She knows I meant it.

And in return, she raises her glass, smirking once again.

"To you, Jin" she says, voice playful.

"And to your disgustingly wonderful, fate-driven, soulmate-filled disaster of a future."

I snort.
But I clink my glass against hers.

Because for the first time in a long, long time-
I'm ready to face it.

_______________

The conversation with Dara lingers in my head long after we've finished our dinner.

By the time we leave the restaurant, the Seoul skyline glows with city lights, and the air is cool, crisp, heavy with autumn.
