Chapter 43: The Truth That Breaks Us ⚠️

Start from the beginning

And we won't let him slip away.

After a moment, he shifts slightly, his grip on his teddy bear loosening. His entire body is exhausted, but when he finally speaks again-
His voice is steady.

And what he says next makes my heart shatter all over again.

"Jiwon and his family saved my life."

Yoongi and I stay silent, holding our breaths, letting him continue.

"They took me in when I had nothing. When I was nothing."

I flinch. My chest aches.
"Tae-"

"They treated me like their own," he whispers. "Like a son. A brother. They never made me feel like a burden. They just... loved me." His voice cracks on the last word.

Yoongi clenches his jaw so tightly, I can see the muscles ticking.
I feel his whole body tighten beside me, as if trying to physically hold himself together.

"His parents gave me a home

"His parents gave me a home. They made sure I ate, that I was warm, that I had clothes. They even paid for my college."

Tears slip down my face.
I can't stop them.

"I kept waiting for it to change," Taehyung admits, voice fragile. "I kept waiting for the day they'd look at me and realize I wasn't worth it."

A beat.
A shaky breath.

"But they never did."

I reach up, brushing his hair back, my heart aching.

"You were always worth it," I whisper.

Yoongi swallows hard, his hand tightening around Taehyung's.

Taehyung exhales shakily.
"I love them. I respect them. And I will always be grateful to them."

He pauses, then adds softly-
"They will always be a big chunk of my life."

And I know.

I know how much that means.
How much it takes to say it.

Taehyung shifts in Yoongi's arms, but he doesn't pull away.

If anything, he burrows closer.
Like he's trying to hide in our warmth.
Like he's trying to let himself be held.

Then, softly-
"I'm not proud of it."

A chill creeps down my spine.

Yoongi stiffens instantly.
"Proud of what?" he asks, voice cautious.

Taehyung hesitates.

And then-Barely above a whisper-
"There were times... I wanted to die."

My breath catches.
Yoongi stops breathing entirely.

"I never told them," Taehyung continues, voice distant. "I never wanted them to worry."

A bitter laugh.
