Madelaina :

We reach Italian just in time. Students pausing themselves to watch us as we enter and take our seats at the back of class.

Do they not have anything better to do?

With the way their eyes goggle it's as if we are mythical creatures.

Mrs Russo comes in a few moments after us.

"Buongiorno a tutti. Now. Do you remember what I told you all yesterday?" She sets her things down onto the desk and holds onto its edges.

Groans engulf the room before she rolls her eyes with a smile and begins to hand them out.

"I'll take that as a yes. It's not too long and if I remember correctly, I did warn you so I hope you've gone though last years notes in preparation."

She gets to me and Lucas. Placing a quiz each in front of us and smiles albeit it seems a little awkward while he's staring out of the window again. Arms crossed and face emotionless.

Does he ever smile?

Once she's gone and has explained the conditions of the mini test, she turns over an hourglass and starts our time.

Lucas moves now. Unfolding his arms to grab a pen from his blazer pocket and beginning the paper.

I follow and we finish around the same time. Just over half of it to spare.

It probably isn't practical or fair on other people that we're both Italian and speak the language fluently but I figured the easy work would leave some more free time for other things.

As I sit there and look around at all of the others still completing their tests, I start to think about what book I'm going to read after the one I currently am.

I have too many options.

I could-

Movement in my peripheral causes me to look in Lucas's direction.

He's leant back in his chair. Legs slightly spread with one of his hands resting on the edge of the desk. The other running through his dark hair.

He snaps his head my way and narrows his eyes.

"What?"

"Nothing." I say simply, turning back to the front of the class.

I can still feel his gaze on me though. Burning two holes into the side of my head.

They continue to do so, or at least, that lingering feeling stays, all the way until class finishes. But when I look back at him once we have been dismissed, his eyes are on the window and then to his bag, which he promptly picks up and hooks onto his shoulder.

He doesn't say anything. Just waits until I have my own bag over my arm before he makes for the door and we leave.

"I'm guessing you know what I have?" I ask. Only the slightest bit of hesitation in my voice.

He's known every other one.

His jaw tenses for a moment. Then another before he lets go and replies in a rough tone.

"English."

I nod. Continuing to walk towards the room I was in yesterday. I think I know where it is now.

I feel Lucas next to me. His hands in his pockets and his ever present mask in place.

"Does that mean you have gym now?"

He doesn't answer.

I know he does though. And I also know that the gym is in the opposite direction to where we're going.

"You don't have to escort me, you know. No one is going to shoot you if I walk to a class by myself."

Now he looks down at me. One brow raised.

"Who says I'm walking you? I could just be headed in the same direction."

"Are you?"

He does that thing again. Where his expression goes stoic but his eyes say something else.

"That's what I thought."

Now, his gaze narrows.

"You think you'd be able to walk on your own? Given what happened yesterday?"

Ow.

I can't tell whether he's joking or not. But it hurts all the same.

I bite my lip and face forward. Deciding to keep quiet for if I open my mouth again I might just try and defend myself. And that can't happen without a piece of the story behind it. Which I'd rather not share with him.

I hear him curse under his breath. But he says nothing more.

We spend the rest of the walk in silence.

Lucas walks me to the door

Lucas walks me to the door. Staying put there and only leaving once I've sat down.

Dio. It's like he thinks I'm an animal. Having to make sure I've done what I need and am behaving nicely before he can go.

Stronzo.

"Madelaina."

Looking up from where I had been glaring at the door, I see Althea standing in front of me.

"Hi."

"You okay?" She questions. Setting her things down and taking the spot on the sofa next to me.

"Mhm. Just..."

"Just..."

"Contemplating whether I should murder someone today."

"I see. Well, if that's that case then you can count me in. I have some pent up anger I'd like to release."

I laugh a little. My mood lifting ever so slightly.

"Well?"

"Well what?"

"Who?"

"Who...what?"

"Who are you mind negotiating to murder? Oh wait. Let me guess. One of those three vampire boys?"

"Vampire boys?"

She just shrugs and pops a piece of butterscotch in her mouth, offering me one from the small box.

"Evil. Old money rich. Not...terrible looking, I guess. And have you ever seen them out of school in the daylight?"

"They're not evil. At least two of them aren't. We're both old money rich and we're not vampires. And don't you think I don't know that you're beguiled with Angel."

"Angel? Please. He's the most blood sucking of them all. Stupid. Annoying...vampire demon."

I laugh at her painful show of denial.

"If you say so."

"I do say so. And I mean it. Now pay attention." She swats my head and we both turn to face Miss Bennet who's just arrived.
