Maya had awakened as soon as she felt two little hand shaking her. She wasn't sure what was going on but as soon she saw the little blonde's worried face and noticed her wife wasn't there she knew something was wrong. She was able to get the girl to sleep and decided to wait for her wife, she knew that if she needed her she would call her. The same happened when she saw her wife walk through the door with the girl in her arms and saw her face, something was wrong.

"What happened?" the blonde said after a few minutes of silence, both girls fast asleep. When she didn't get a response she turned to look at her wife and saw silent tears running down her face "Hey, hey what's wrong?" she asked softly placing the toddler on the bed and fully turning to have a better look of her wife

"She is in so much pain" Carina whispered "she looked so lost and was choking and coughing and..." she explained suddenly stopping "Her chest... she has a bruise that... god" she tried to say but couldn't find the words "She has been in so much pain and we didn't noticed" she said feeling guilty

"Hey, don't do that" the firefighter said "She's okay now, she's safe" she said trying to comfort her wife "We are going to figure it out" she said finishing the conversation. It was late and they all needed some sleep, they will figure it out tomorrow

The next morning Carina was the first one to wake up to find a small brunette snuggled against her chest. Memories of the night before hit her like a truck, feeling a sudden need to bring the girl closer to her if possible, trying to protect her. She was lost in her thoughts when the five-year-old began to move. She slowly opened her eyes getting used to the light coming through the window and looked to the side, meeting a pair of eyes looking at her.

"Good morning bambina" said the brunette to which the little girl smiled

"Morning" she whispered and then stayed quiet for a little bit. The brunette knew something was on the girl's mind so she kept shut waiting for the girl to speak "Is Luna okay?" she finally asked. Emma had never seen her sister that bad, Luna being the oldest from a very young age took the place of protector. She made sure her sister was okay, putting everything she felt aside.

"She is" the brunette answered trying to comfort the five-year-old "Yesterday she had a really bad dream so she got really scared" Carina explained "but she will be all right"

"I make it better?" she asked wanting to try to help. When she saw the woman nod she carefully placed a soft kiss on the older girl's forehead like her sister did with her everytime she had a nightmare

After a few minutes of silence Emma began to feel that her eyes were heavy, slumber was beginning to take over her. She rested her head on the pillow and smiled when she felt a hand go through her hair, Maya had just woken up. Emma turned to find eyes much like hers staring at her. The woman smiled when she noticed how difficult it was for the little girl to stay awake.

"Sleep bug" she whispered and Emma finally let herself drift off falling asleep almost instantly "Morning babe" she said placing a small kiss on her wife's lips "How are you?" she asked remembering last night events

"Good" she simply said giving her wife a light smile "yesterday was just a bit too much but I'm better now" she explained to the blonde that quickly nodded.

Suddenly both of them noticed the little girl in Carina's arms started to wake up. She started moving a little and opened her eyes for a brief second. Deciding she didn't want to be awake yet she snuggled further into Carina's chest. The brunette smiled and began to caress the little girl's back tracing patterns trying to help her get back to sleep. Instead of sleeping, Luna stayed awake enjoying the comfort she was in. After a few minutes the Italian stopped thinking the little brunette had fallen asleep, soon realizing she was wrong when Luna looked up at her.

"Morning bella" she said to the eight-year-old

"Morning" she said feeling her chest and throat ache due to all the crying and coughing from last night "Morning Maya" she said to the blonde that also looked at her smiling. Luna couldn't hold the frown that formed in her face and that didn't go unnoticed by neither of both women

"You okay cub?" Maya asked feeling worried

"Hurts" the girl let out followed by a growl because of the pain saying that caused "Cream?" she asked remembering it had made her feel better yesterday. Although it didn't made the pain go away completely it made the area relax

"I can go look for it" Carina said moving the girl to the side so she could stand up but Luna was too comfortable so she held tight to Carina "Bella, I need to stand up to go look for the cream" she said but the girl still didn't release her grip

"Which one is it?" Maya asked starting to get up

"I left it on the sink" she explained "It's the one with the purple box" she said as Maya left the room

Once Maya returned from the hall bathroom, she handed the cream to Carina who sat against the head of the bed, accommodating Luna on her lap "Is it okay if Maya stays?" the brunette asked not really knowing how the kid felt about the blonde seeing the bruises. The kid stayed silent and Maya took it as if she wasn't comfortable with that yet. She was about to head out but then she saw Luna nodding slowly.

Carina started to lift the girl's shirt when Maya saw the big purple spot. At first she felt like throwing up, thinking about someone doing that to her little girl made her sick. That feeling quickly changed to rage, she was furious, she felt like punching something. If she ever saw the bastard that had made that to the little kid on her wife's lap...

When the brunette was over she lowered the girl's shirt and Luna placed her head on the woman's chest closing her eyes waiting for the pain to go away. Maya left the room for a couple minutes and Luna noticed "Is Maya mad?" she asked

"She's a little upset" she said not wanting to lie to the kid "but not at you" she quickly said "She is upset you are in pain, that's it" she explained and the girl nodded

Maya had to step out of the room for a little bit. She needed to calm herself down. How did she not noticed the girl was in pain? Now she understood how Carina felt last night and she was really trying to follow her own advice but it was hard. When she came back to the room she saw both, her wife and her foster daughter, still in the same position

When Luna saw Maya she reached her arms up towards her. It's true she was a little more comfortable with Carina, but that didn't mean she didn't feel safe with the blonde. The firefighter quickly took the girl in her arms not wanting to let her go.

"I'll go make breakfast" the Italian said before placing a kiss on the sleeping toddler forehead to then get up and leave not wanting to interrupt her wife's and the eight-year-old's moment
