Clary drew the rune in the air before pushing it into a portal. Jace and I quickly jog through it, leaving Alec, Izzy, and Clary to handle things in the city.

When Jace and I stepped through we realized we were in the forest. It was so quiet it was like it was abandoned, making me nervous. "Where is everyone?"

"We're still a hike away from Lake Lyn."

"Guess Clary's navigation's skills are still off."

"We need to hurry. We can't let Valentine reach the lake," Jace said, making me nod.

We fast walked, seeing as we would waste too much energy running the whole way. Either way, Jace and I found ourselves arriving at Malachi's camp before dark. We passed by the soldiers before walking towards Malachi's tent. He greeted us outside.

"Consul Malachi. Jace Herondale and Faith Fairchild of the New York Institute," Jace introduced.

"I know who you both are. Everyone does," He replied.

I spoke up, "Valentine is on his way to Lake Lyn. He has the Sword and the Cup."

"Yes, I'm quite aware of Valentine's progress."

Jace and I share a questionable look before Jace continued, "We need to get to the water. Now."

"I'm afraid that's not gonna happen."

Suddenly four of Malachi's guys grab Jace and me, causing us to struggle. We both looked at Malachi as he turned to walk away, noticing the circle mark on his neck.

He's a Circle member.

"Take them inside," Malachi motioned towards his tent.

"You trader!" Jace yelled as we both struggled in the men's grip. They take us inside the tent and use chains to chain us to a metal pole. Jace has his back to me, silence filling the tent for a few moments, until I broke it.

A mix of shock and anger are heard in my voice, "How does the Consul, the leader of the entire Clave, end up a Circle member?"

"Valentine threatened to wipe out any Shadowhunters who opposed him. Malachi's just trying to save his own ass," Jace said, sounding bitter as well.

"And sit back while everything around him is destroyed," I added.

Suddenly, the same soldiers that had chained us in the tent enter with Malachi. This was out chance to ask why.

"How could you side with Valentine?" Jace asked?

"There is only one side. The side of the Angels. Valentine is only doing what the Clave has been trying to accomplish for centuries, eradicate demons."

"No. No, the Angels would never be in favor of killing millions of innocent Downworlders along with demons. They've helped us," I say, shaking my head.

Malachi kneels down in front of me, his hand brushing a piece of hair out of my face. Jac pulls at the chains, "Don't you dare touch her!"

Ignoring Jace, Malachi speaks, "When the angel, Raziel created the first Shadowhunter, there was no such thing as Downworlders. But over the centuries, disgusting half-breeds emerged. Warlocks, vampires, Seelies, werewolves. They banded together, grew more powerful. But finally they will be destroyed. And so will you."

"You won't win," I say, pulling at my chains.

"Maybe, maybe not. Either way, you two won't be here to find out."

The soldiers grab Jace and I, unchaining us from the pole and chaining our hands behind our backs. We're pushed and yanked out of the tent and into the night air. We're led deeper into the woods, making my heart race.
