SMOKING/ALCOHOL"What was so urgent?" I asked Sergio as we headed off for the airport. He looked up and shuffled in his seat across from me.
"Sergio." I stated bored with his antics. "Well nothing." He scratched his nose. I furrowed my brows at him and sighed deeply, leaning back into the soft leather seats of the SUV. "You're telling me that it was nothing...and I could have spent more time with her. You fucking dickhead. I fucking hate you." I scowled at him.
"I just couldn't watch you any longer. Practically shoving your tongue down her throat." He retorted. I rubbed my face. "You do know you can look elsewhere."
He curled his lips as if say he knew that. "Sergio you're demoted. You can be Raf's guard." I smirked at him. He didn't mind Raf, in fact they got on well, however, Raf got with a lot more girls than I ever did.
"You wouldn't dare...fine I won't ever interrupt you again..unless you're going to fucking die. That's kind of my job you know." He replied. I chuckled. I was glad I had him by my side.
We soon boarded a private plane and eventually we reached Italy. I was now beyond exhausted. I set down my third cup of coffee and rolled my neck while yawning.
"You should have slept." Sergio stated as if it were so obvious. "In hindsight I should have." I agreed with him. But I was far too busy, I needed to catch up with some paperwork and I wanted to do this before we landed.
The car stopped at home and I stepped out. I was greeted with darkness. It was almost eleven at night by now. I looked up at the star filled sky and then at the door. Sergio went ahead and held it open for me.
I walked in and headed straight for my office. I could hear light snoring and the faint ticking of the clock. I opened the door and found Raf fast asleep sitting at my desk. His feet were propped up on the desk, his head was dropped back.
Picking up a glass and bottle from the side, I poured in some water. I tipped it into my mouth and looked down at Raf. It's a shame I'm an ass. I set the glass down with a loud bang.
Raf flinched and looked around startled. His dark brown eyes went wide. I noticed he reached for his gun. "Oh mio fottuto Dio, fottuto culo (Oh my fucking God, you fucking ass)" He swore in Italian as he tossed his legs off the desk. "Why the fuck did you do that for?" He groaned as he rubbed his eyes.
"Why wouldn't I?" I chuckled and sat down on the chair opposite him. "You look like shit." Raf insulted as he rubbed his head. "You look like shit too." I smirked.
"When did you get here?" He asked. "A few minutes ago. Catch me up." I said. And so he did. He did moan and grumble throughout but he gave me a full report of what had been happening and what I needed to sort out.
"What about Mara?" I asked him as I rested my eyes. "She wants us to meet Emily." Raf said. I opened my eyes in time to see him roll his. "What the fuck are you pissed at?" I asked genuinely.
"Nothing. I'm fucking exhausted." Raf yawned, using his hand to cover his mouth. I know why he's pissed. He's fucking sex deprived. The little shit.
I stood up and called for Sergio. "Call Mara and if she wants to come tomorrow for dinner, send a car." I said. Raf nodded lightly.
"Where are you going?" He called after me as I walked out of the office. I sighed heavily. "To sleep." As I headed upstairs I could hear his footsteps behind me as well as his heavy breathing. He was also going to sleep and this time in his bed.
The next day I awoke early, finally feeling somewhat rested. I felt more relaxed, I was home once more. The air, the noise, the people; they were the same. Reliable.
I rubbed my chin and knocked on Raf's door. When I got no response, I simply barged in. I looked down at him in bed, fast asleep, not a care in the world. Looking down at the water bottle I held, I unscrewed the cap and steadily poured the cool liquid onto his exposed back. It dribbled down his spine and probably into his ass crack.
"Fottuto bastardo...merda di cane (Fucking bastard..dog shit) Why do you keep doing this to me?!" Raf grumbled and swore as he tossed the covers off himself. He sat on the edge of his bed, his hair a fluffy mess.
"Get up." I said as I took a gulp of water. "And do what? What's so important?" Raf asked. I watched as he stood up and looked at the time on his phone. He looked at me and grinned. "Is it that bastard again? You know some day I really just want to." He punched a tight fist into his other hand.
"No it's not him." I replied with a smile. Although James got on both our nerves he was staying out of our way, for now. "Let's go for a run." I said as I walked out of his room. I left before I could catch his look of bewilderment but I am sure it was there, along with hatred and contempt.
We had been running side by side for ten minutes now. The sky was clear and bright. A perfect day for a murder some would say. I looked across at Raf.
"Nico-" Raf spoke as he continued to jog. I cut him off quickly and stopped running. I faced him and shook my head. "Fucking hell Raf, I told you to stop fucking his sister. Can't you keep it in your pants?" I breathed out a heavy breath.
He looked at me and scoffed. "Nico's been saying shit again and doing shit he shouldn't do. He might start a rebellion and that's bad for business." He looked at me seriously. "Did you warn him?" I asked. "I sent some men to rough him up. Clearly it didn't work...so now I'm thinking I should just go and put a bullet in his head." He replied. He rubbed his neck.
"After dinner then." I said as I started to walk back home. He nodded and walked back with me. Nico was a dead man walking and he had only got the mercy to live until tonight because I couldn't possibly postpone meeting Emily.
Raphael and I spent the rest of the day catching up with paperwork, overseeing some business and talking to some men.
When it was seven in the evening, Raf and I were both dressed in suits, awaiting for Mara and Emily. The maids had already prepared dinner and set the table. I smoked on a cigarette and leaned against the wall.
I saw Raf smirk at me. It was a dangerous game I was playing. Mara would most definitely smell the smoke. But I wondered if she would tell me off in front of Emily or not. Raf chewed on his gum as he paced back and forth. "How's Lira doing?" He asked.
"Just fine...I did say she could come whenever she wanted." I replied as I blew out a cloud of smoke. "Whenever huh?" He grinned at me. "Shut the fuck up." I chuckled at him. "You shut the fuck up." He mocked back.
"Meet my brothers." Mara's voice rang out. I coughed and Raf spat out his gum. We both turned around to face Mara. I held my cigarette behind my back as best I could.
Mara stood with a unfazed look, wearing jeans and a shirt. Her hair was tied into a loose ponytail and she wore white sneakers. The girl beside her, Emily was a good looking girl. She also had blonde hair but it was much darker than Mara's. She wore a slim blue dress.
"Good evening, it's a pleasure to meet you Emily. Might I say that you look absolutely beautiful." Raf greeted Emily first. Before he could grab ahold of Emily's hand, I held out mines first.
"Hello Emily, it's finally nice to meet you." I shook her hand. Emily's pink tinted lips smiled. "Let me guess, you're Vicenzo and you're Raphael." She said as she pointed between us both. "How did you know?" Raf furrowed his eyebrows when she got it right.
"Mara said the cuter one was Raphael." Emily smiled. Raf licked his lips and ruffled his hair. Flattery could get you anywhere with him. He showed Emily the way to the dining room. I took this distraction as a way to hand my cigarette to Sergio.
"Way to go Mara, make his ego bigger why don't you." I looked at her. She chuckled lightly. "Don't worry. I told her you had the brains." She patted my shoulder before walking towards the dining room. I followed after her.
We soon found out more about Emily and I did like the girl. I sipped my wine, Raf was busy cutting his steak and Mara was giggling with Emily.
"What do you do Vicenzo? Mara didn't exactly say?" Emily asked as she looked at me with her brown eyes. "Enzo is fine and what I do depends on how serious you are with Mara." I said as I looked at her. She cleared her throat and looked around the room.
"I apologise for Enzo's resting bitch face. I promise you, he likes you." Raf spoke up. "What do you do?" She asked him instead. He relaxed back. "I can't answer that either."
"What do they mean? What do they do? Mara?" Emily asked Mara who was quiet all of a sudden. She finally sighed and held her hand on the table. "I really like you Emily and bringing you home to meet my brothers, most people would find it easy but there's some things I haven't told you." Mara said cautiously.
"What do you mean?" Emily asked looking slightly worried. "It's just..it's nothing to do with me." Mara mumbled. She couldn't find the words.
"Emily, it's quite difficult to say this but..well we run a business. Exporting and importing goods. I own several hotels, bars, casinos." I said. Raf nodded as he agreed with what I said.
"That wasn't too hard to say." Emily said. Mara cleared her throat and rubbed her forehead. "Emily I should have told you. I just didn't know how. He's telling the truth but look at where we are. Do you notice the guards? Well what I'm trying to say is, they have this all by illegal means."
By now Emily looked as confused as ever and stared at Mara with wide eyes. "He runs a Mafia. A very big powerful Mafia. They're not evil." Mara blurted quickly.
Emily looked between us all. "What like the movies? Mafias, drugs cartels..is this a joke?..Mar." She stood up. Raf and I stood up too. "Mara what is this?" She asked as she looked down at her. Mara stood up and tried to rub her shoulder but Emily roughly pushed her off and left the room.
"I'm sorry I-" I started before Mara cut me off. "It's fine. I knew it would be hard but you are my family so..I'll sort it don't worry." She said as she grabbed her bag. "You can just say it's a joke." Raf spoke up.
Mara shook her head. "I just thought she would get it...but you are right Enzo, our world is messed up." She sighed. I walked towards her. "No Mara, I'm not fucking right."
That was a first. Usually people are so fear stricken they don't even utter a word and yet Emily thought we were joking. Surely the presence of guards would have made her think.
Mara left quickly and Raf looked at me. "Fucking hell. What did we do? I quite liked this Emily." He pulled off his tie roughly. I exhaled sharply. "Mara shouldn't have brought her here to meet us."
"The fuck? If she can't understand what we do, she shouldn't even be with Mara." Raf grumbled. "Mara doesn't even get involved with our business and yet she suffers." I sighed and rubbed my eyes. "I'll go and have a word."
