Thankyou Hope-Adon :)

What inspired you to write your first book?

World problems. Sounds crazy, but my first book is about two groups of people fighting over land and resources and the ever-lasting I’m-right-and-you’re-wrong, which defines pretty much any two feuding groups these days. I thought it would be interesting to write a story in which it was hard to define the righteous/justified side.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I wouldn’t call her my favorite (because I don’t have one favorite) but the person whose work really hit me the hardest would be Gayle Foreman. I must have reread Where She Went like ten times already. It’s a powerful and evocative book with vivid characters, and she has an amazing way with words: simple but elegant.

What is your favourite theme/genre to write about?

Fantasy, usually good versus evil with shades of gray.

Do you see writing as a career?

There was a time recently when I didn’t, but now I think I do.

If you could work with any author who would it be?

Melina Marchetta. I’d love to see her at work as she creates impossibly real characters with tear-jerking stories.

Do you use real-life facts based on true stories?

I don’t use true stories, but I’m inspired constantly by snippets of reality. I’ll hear a phrase and build a whole world or storyline out of it.

Did you ever think you'd be, where you are right now?

Never. I didn’t think I’d ever finish a book.

What advice would you give to people who "run out of creativity" when writing?

Sit down with a friend and talk about your story out loud. I’ve found that doing so really helps me lay everything out and figure out how to proceed. Take a walk, interact with people, ride on a train and stare out the window. Get a lot of mental stimulation. But always keep your story close in mind. The more you think about it, the more it will come to life.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

I try to understand the cause of the block. If it’s just a writing problem, I write anyway (I can always improve the writing later). If it’s caused by lack of creativity, I do what I mentioned before and obsess about it all day until something clicks. Also, I go on a reading binge. Reading what someone else wrote might help me get a firmer grasp on my own story and figure out what the problem is.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Learn as much as you can about writing, believe in yourself, and always put in 100% effort.

Anything fun about yourself you want your fans to know?

Not sure it’s fun, but definitely weird: I’ve been doing fanfic in my head since I was a little girl. What that means is that I used to daydream about the characters in books and movies going on to do other things. Hey, it kept me wildly entertained.

How would you describe yourself?

Introverted, cripplingly empathetic, and easily amused by bad jokes.
