Cece shrugged. "I helped the FBI catch national criminals and it's more exhausting than you would think."
Tristan nodded like this was a weekly occurrence.
"Cece!" Elliot said, running up with Beck. "There you are! What happened? You took off running and then SWAT was everywhere."
"SWAT?" Tristan asked. He was confused for a moment before a devilish smile spread across his face. "Cece were right about the Wainwrights." He held out his hand towards Elliot and she looked at it with disgust. "Pay up."
"I don't have cash on me right now," Elliot snapped back. "It wasn't the first thing I grabbed on my way out of the house to break Cece out of handcuffs."
Cece turned to Beck. "I told you Elliot was betting against me." She held out her hand like Tristan.
Beck turned to Elliot. "Couldn't you have been a supportive sister?"
"I broke her out of handcuffs," Elliot reiterated. "What more do you want me to do?"
Beck started to answers but stopped when they noticed the SWAT team walking up Charles Street. As the group moved under a streetlamp, Cece saw Freddy and Penelope were with them.
In silence, Beck and the Mackenzie siblings watched the Wainwrights get loaded into the back of the SWAT van. The SWAT team cleared out quickly and soon it was only Carter and Donovan left. They glanced over at the small group once, but it seemed like they had lost all interest in Cece now that they had the Wainwrights.
"Elliot, did you eat all the ice cream?" Tristan asked.
He stood and started towards the house and the rest of them followed.
"Why do you assume it was me?" Elliot asked. "Cece eats just as much ice cream."
Beck laughed as he put his arm around Elliot's shoulder.
"Why did you laugh?" Elliot asked him.
She tried to push him away but he wrapped his arms around her as she started to argue with him.
Cece brought up the rear of the group. She was moving slowly, but the thought of ice cream kept her putting one foot in front of the other. Her siblings were already in their house when Donovan intercepted her at the bottom of the stairs.
"Miss Mackenzie, would you mind giving us a few more moments of your time?" he asked. "We had a few questions."
She thought about saying no, just to stick it to Carter but remembered her briefcase of snacks was still in their van. The snacks were replaceable but she had spent an outrageous amount of the briefcase.
"Sure," she said, following Donovan back to the van.
She got a stiff nod from Carter as she approached the van.
"How did you know about the pizza shop?" Donovan asked.
"The flour in the air," Cece explained. "The air always gets hazy when the bulkhead in open."
"But how did the Wainwrights get into the pizza shop?" Carter asked.
"There is a tunnel between the Wainwrights house and the pizza shop," Cece explained. "A long time ago, the pizza shop owner use to live in the Wainwrights house and connected the two buildings so he could easily move between the two."
Carter and Donovan nodded.
"Is there anything else?" Cece asked, her thoughts focused on the cartons of ice cream that were being eaten without her, and the story her siblings were waiting to hear.
Carter and Donovan looked at each other and after a moment shook their heads.
"You are free to go," Donovan said.
"Very good," Cece said. She reached into the van for her briefcase. She took a step back and nodded. "Agents, this has been fun."
Carter's face went stony. "I can't say the same."
Cece shrugged. "You closed your case. I don't think you have a lot to complain about."
Carter opened her mouth, the expression on her face saying she had a lot to complain about but Donovan grabbed her arm and she shut her mouth.
"The FBI thanks you for your assistance in the capture of Freddy and Penelope Wainwright," Donovan said all political.
But Cece watched Carter's expression the whole time and saw she had a lot of feelings about Cece's interference and gratitude was not one of them.
"Any time," Cece said, tipping an imaginary hat before walking away.
"Miss Mackenzie," Carter called after her. Cece paused. "If you break into an FBI van again, I'll arrest you without question. If you have information you think will help the FBI, email it."
Cece smiled. She knew Carter was trying to threaten her, but all Cece heard was that there would be a next time.
That was so freaking hilarious!! Please tell me you feel the same way? 🗯💭💬
I seriously love how terrifying Carter is. You never really realize it when it's all from her prespective but dang! that girl is intimidating!
A huge thanks to my sister Grace (JoymomentsSISTER) for writing this! I loved it and if you did too then tag her and let her know! I can't say whether she'll respond but I'll make her at least look at the comments.
