It snapped her attention back to the agents and she was surprised to find Carter was the one clapping. But there was nothing celebratory about the expression on her face.
"You listed off all the information we already knew and have now wasted twenty minutes of our time," Carter said. "It's time for you to go. Donovan."
The male agent reached for the passenger side door as Cece scrambled for something to say. "But what about Florida?" she asked. Donovan was out of the car and opening the back sliding door. "You didn't know about that."
"And we still don't," Carter said. "No offense, but until we can confirm your information we aren't trusting the word of a nosy neighbor."
Donovan waved for Cece to exit the van, but she wasn't giving up so easily. "You don't understand," Cece said with urgency, "Florida is the key to everything. It's where Freddy and Penny got their start and we all know the first jobs are always the sloppiest. They hadn't perfected their skills and they would have left evidence behind. If you want to be able to catch them, Florida is where you look."
"Listen here," Carter said, straightening her shoulders like she had just entered a boxing ring, "we don't need your help. Let me remind you that we are federal agents. This is our job. Not some strange hobby we took up because we weren't competent at our job."
Cece knew the last part was a jab at her writer's block but it didn't cut deep. Agent Carter was talking to her and that was exactly what Cece wanted. Talking meant Cece still had a seat in the van.
"You might have had fun playing detective but let me remind you real lives are at stake here," Carter said. "Now get..."
"Carter," Agent Donovan said.
Both women looked at him but he was only looking at Agent Carter. Cece watched again in amazement as they carried out a silent conversation. Her and her sister Elliot were basically twins but every time she tried to have a silent conversation with her, Elliot always assumed Cece was communicating she wanted ice cream.
In fairness, eighty-five percent of the time that was what Cece was trying to tell her, but the other fifteen percent Elliot was always wrong. But the communication between the two agents was another level.
Cece's eyes darted down to Donovan's hand and she noticed a gold band on his ring finger. Her interest piqued, she looked to Carter's left hand and wasn't surprised when she found a similar gold ring on her ring finger. They were married.
Cece began to wonder about the beginning of their relationship until Donovan finally said, "penny." Cece looked at him, confused why anyone would need a penny, but by the look on Agent Carter's face, the word meant something to her.
"She still goes," Carter said. "She is a civilian."
Cece looked at Agent Donovan to see if he would come to her rescue but he only motioned her out of the van.
"Fine," Cece said, slowly moving towards the van. "Just remember, you might have been watching Freddy for two weeks, but I've been living next door to him for six months."
She climbed out but turned back to give Agent Carter a defiant look.
"All I'll say is you learn a lot eavesdropping on late night drunken fights. You learn things that might be useful to an ongoing investigation. And I'll remind you my house number is twenty-three."
Cece roughly grabbed her briefcase and walked away. She kept her shoulders squared, hoping any moment they would call her back when they realized what a great resource she was. She even slowed her steps as she reached the staircase leading up to the house but when she reached the front door she finally had to accept her mission was over.
Shoulders drooped, she opened the door and dropped her briefcase with a loud thud to announce her presence.
"You solved the Murder Mystery first?" Beck called out from the kitchen.
"You remembered you don't like parties and left with all the evidence," Elliot guessed.
Cece was about to answer when there was a knock at the door. She opened it expecting to find Elliot's late-night food craving getting delivered but found Agent Donovan on her front step. Her eyes went big and she snapped to attention.
"Agent Donovan," she said.
"Is that my Thai food?" Elliot called out.
"Miss Mackenzie," Donovan said. "Would you please come with me?"
Cece couldn't help smiling.
"It would be my pleasure," she said, grabbing her briefcase and following him out the door.
