You watch as Colby walks in the door, completely disregarding you as he talks to someone on the phone. You say hi but he doesn't hear it.
He quickly grabs his phone charger off the counter and leaves again.
     Bye.
You roll your eyes and get up to put a movie in the DVD player. You had no idea when he'd be back again.
Over the past couple months, you've noticed that he always wants to hang out with his friends. Usually, that would be no big deal, but he hardly shows up for anything at all. You try to convince yourself that it's okay, that he'll be back soon and he won't go out so much as he is right now, but it's not looking very promising.
You wait about three hours and watch one full movie and half of another one. You're bored out of your mind and considering driving uptown to get some ice cream when the door opens. In comes Colby, holding a bag of takeout.
You don't even look in his direction. He sets the bag on the counter and kicks off his shoes.
     "I brought Chinese!"
You don't respond. He looks at you, a little concerned. Chinese was your favorite. You were always excited when he brought some home.
He goes and puts some basketball shorts on (what he usually sleeps in) and sits on the end of the couch next to you.
You stare straight ahead at the TV, feeling anger and annoyance bubble up a little.
He looks at you and begins to feel that there's something definitely off. Normally, you would've greeted him with a kiss and been happy to see him, but not this time.
You stand up and go to the kitchen to get some water. He waits a second and follows you cautiously.
When you know he's behind you, you turn around.
     "What do you want?"
"Is something wrong? You look mad."
"I don't know, you tell me."
You get your cup of water and drink it before  going to walk back to the living room. He steps in your way.
     "Did I do something?"
     "Yes, yes you did."
He looks down at you with a slightly confused look on his face.
     "What is it?"
     "You really don't know?"
     He shakes his head.
You lightly push him back and walk past him.
     "Wait!"
You go into the bedroom and sit on the bed. The floor creaks a little as he steps into the room.
     "Don't."
He keeps his distance but cautiously slides down against the wall to sit on the floor. He's facing you from across the room but you don't look at him.
     "Talk to me... please?"
You hesitate before starting to talk but still don't look at him.
     "I miss you Colby."
     "What? I'm right here."
"I miss you. I miss you being there when I need someone to talk to. I miss you being there to make me laugh. I miss you being there when I need a shoulder to cry on."
He listens intently as you go on.
"I know you have friends, and you had them before you even knew me. That's not a problem in the slightest. The issue comes when you spend maybe three nights a week in your own apartment. Every time you leave, I wonder 'When's Colby gonna come back now?' or 'Is he even coming home tonight?'"
"I worry about you. When you don't pick up the phone, when you don't come home when you say you will. All I can do is hope you're safe and unhurt and wait until I see you again."
You want to cry. You're trying so hard to make your point but you feel like you're doing nothing but sounding stupid.
"Is that how you actually feel?"
You nod, feeling tears sting at your eyes as you look out the window.
"Why didn't you say anything before?"
"I thought you'd notice. I thought you'd want to spend time with me at least once in a while."
You stand up and turn away from him. You're not in the mood to let him see you cry.
He stands and takes a couple steps toward you.
"Y/N, baby... I'm so sorry. I don't realize how long I'm actually gone for. Days turn to nights and I forget that there's someone here who wants me home safe and actually misses me..."
You face him and can see that he genuinely does care. He gives a little half-hearted smile.
"From now on, I'll spend more time with you and just here in general. I missed you, more than you could ever imagine. I don't want you to feel alone or nervous that I won't make it home."
You step forward and hug him. He returns the hug, even tighter than you had. He buries his face in your shoulder, realizing that he really did miss you.
You appreciate that he took you into consideration and are happy that he'll be around more often. You give him a kiss, the first one in a week or so. He smiles and scoops you up playfully.
He takes you out to the couch and drops you on the stack of blankets. He pushes you back up against the couch and showers you with kisses. You laugh.
"That was for all the times I missed out on when I wasn't here."
