“John, what are you doing?” I said calmly.

He just looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Lexi, I’m sorry.”

“John, why are you doing this? I thought you said you were gonna stop.”

“I did Lexi. I did stop. But once the withdraw symptoms came, I broke down and did it again.”

“When did you have the withdraw symptoms?”

“On Saturday night.”

Everything was starting to make sense now.

“Were you high on Saturday when you saw me and Ronnie kissing?”

“Yeah, that’s why I freaked out. I wasn’t thinking straight, and that’s why I was getting ready to shoot up right now, because I made a huge mistake and I thought you would hate me forever.”

“Didn’t you get my texts?”

“No, I haven’t looked at my phone since Saturday.”

I went over and sat next to him on the tub.

“John.” I said.

“Yeah?”

“I forgive you.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. I need you John. Our babies need you.”

“Then why did you kiss Ronnie?”

“He practically forced me into it. I was just trying to make him feel better.”

“I don’t like that kid.”

“John, I do. He’s a good friend to me. He sat with me all night while I cried over you. He was there for me when you weren’t.”

He looked at the floor. “Lexi? Why do I have to be such an idiot?”

“You’re not an idiot. You just have problems making the right decisions.”

“How do I start making the right ones?”

“Well, I don’t know. Ask someone for help maybe.”

“Lexi?”

“Yeah?”

“Please help me.” His eyes had a look of desperation in them.

My phone rang. I took it out of my purse. It was my mom.

“I’ll be out in a few minutes mom. Just hold on.” I said.

“Lexi, you need to get out here now. Something is wrong with Rebecca. She’s in the hospital.”

“What?… What happened?”

“I’ll tell you on the way to the hospital. Just get out here right now.”

I hung up.

“John, I’ve got to go. Something happened to Rebecca. She’s in the hospital.”

“What? I’m going too.”

“Ok, just hurry up.”

He ran into his room to change out of his pajamas.

“I’ll be outside in our car.” I yelled to him.

“Ok.”

I ran to the car and got in. Mom started putting the car into drive but I stopped her.

“Mom, hold on. John’s gonna come with us. We need to wait for him to change.”

“Did you tell him to hurry?”

“Yes mom.” I said in an annoyed voice.

“You don’t have to get mad at me, I was just asking.”

“I know. I wasn’t getting mad.”

John came out and got into the car.

Mom started driving.

“So what happened?” I asked.

“They’re not sure. They’re doing some tests on her. She had a water skiing accident Friday night. They think something might be wrong with the baby.”

“Is she ok?”

“She’s fine, but she’s been having stomach pains.”

“I hope everything’s ok.” I said.

“Me too.”

We drove the rest of the way in silence.

We walked up to the front help desk to find out where Rebecca was at. The man at the desk was doing a crossword puzzle.

“Excuse me sir.” I said.

He looked up.

“Can I help you miss?” He said angrily.

“Uhm, I was just wondering where Rebecca Miles was at.”

“How should I know?”

“Sir, please. I need to know what floor and room number she’s in.”

“Fine.”

He started typing on the computer that was next to him.

“Floor 5, room number 120.”

“Thank you.”

We went to the elevator and went to the fifth floor, and then went to the help desk up there.

“Hi could you please tell me where room number 120 is at?”

“Just down the hall and to the left.”

“Thanks.” I said.

“No problem.”

Even with the directions, it took us a while to find it.

The door was closed so we knocked.

“Come in.” A weak voice said.

My mom slowly opened the door.

Rebecca was sleeping, and her mom was sitting on the chair.

“How is she?” Mom asked.

“She’s getting worse. Her stomach pains are getting so bad that she can barely stand up.”

“I hope the baby is ok.” I said.

“That’s what they’re worried about, the baby. They’re almost positive that she lost it.”

“Does she know that?”

“No. They’re afraid to tell her. They know how much she wanted this baby.”

The doctor came in. He went over and woke Rebecca up.

“Rebecca, it’s time for another test. We need you to get up.”

She opened her eyes and looked at the doctor.

“Is my baby ok?”

“We don’t know yet. This test that we’re going to do will tell us.”

“Ok.” She got up and followed him out of the room.

He looked back. “Mrs. Miles do you want to come?”

“No, I’m going to stay with the guests.”

“You don’t have to do that. We can go down to the cafeteria and get something to drink, maybe walk around a little bit. You can text me when you’re back.”

“Ok.” She got up and followed them out of the room.

We went down to the basement where the cafeteria was. Mom and John got a Pepsi and I got a flavored water and some yogurt because I didn’t eat breakfast that morning.

We left the cafeteria and started walking around. We saw a bunch of paintings on the walls and a water fountain outside. About twenty minutes later, Rebecca’s mom texted us.

We went back to the room.

“Well?” Mom said.

She looked at us with tears in her eyes. “She lost the baby.”
