It was July 26th. I was 2 months pregnant and I was having another doctor’s appointment today. I was going to have an ultrasound done. I was really excited because I knew that I was going to be able to hear the baby’s heart beat, so I asked John to come along and he said he would.

We got there at 2:30.

“Are you excited to hear the heartbeat?” I asked.

“Uhm. I guess.” He said.

“You guess? You should be happy about this.”

“I dunno. Maybe if I was older, like in my late 20’s I would be happy about it.”

“Yeah, I guess I understand what you’re saying, but I’m excited.”

“That’s good.”

“Lexi, Dr. Walker can see you now.” The nurse said.

I got up, but John kept sitting. “Aren’t you coming?”

“Oh, yeah.” He got up and followed me back into the room.

“Hi Lexi, hi John.” Brandi said.

“Hi.” I said.

“Hi mom.”

“Ok, so, today we’re going to have an ultrasound done, but first we need to do a few little tests. Follow me, we’re going to go weigh you.”

We both followed her to the scale.

“Ok. Take off your shoes and step up here.” She said.

I did what she said.

“Ok. You weigh 115. You’ve gained a pound since the last time you were here.”

“Is that good or bad?” I asked.

“That’s perfectly normal. You shouldn’t start gaining too much weight until the fourth month.”

I put my shoes back on and we walked back into the room.

“Now we’re going to take your blood pressure and make sure that’s it’s ok.”

She took it and it was normal.

“Time for the fun part, we get to hear the heartbeat. We’re gonna take you into a different room where all the equipment is.”

We followed her back there.

“Ok, Lexi go ahead and lay down and pull your shirt up just enough to show your stomach.”

She came over and sat on a stool next to the bed.

“Ok. I’m gonna put this gel on your belly, but don’t worry, it’s not cold. We heat it up.”

“Ok.” I said. I was kind of nervous.

She put it on and started doing whatever it is they do.

“You know, this is exciting for me too since I’m the grandma.”

“Yeah, I kinda forgot about that.”

She smiled. At first we couldn’t hear anything, but then after a few minutes, we could hear the heartbeat.

“There it is.” Brandi said. “Wait. I think I hear something else.”

“What is it? Is there something wrong with the baby?” John asked.

She didn’t answer. She just sat there smiling.
