I didn’t sleep at all that night because I was so worried about Jess. I just had that feeling that something wasn’t ok.

I decided that since I wasn’t able to sleep I would call her again even though  it was 2 in the morning.

The phone rang about 4 or 5 times and then it quit ringing and someone picked up.

“Jess! Where are you? Are you ok? I was so worried about you.” I said.

“Who is this?” I heard a guys voice say.

“This is Lexi, who is this?” My happiness quickly faded away.

“This is Max.”

“Max who?”

“Max Parker. What do you want?”

“I want to talk to Jessica! Where is she?”

“She’s sleeping, and that’s what I was doing before you woke me up.”

“Yeah, well I’m sorry, but I need to know that Jess is ok. Let me talk to her.”

“I told you, she’s sleeping. Goodbye.” he hung up.

Now I was even more worried because I didn’t know a Max Parker, and since he wouldn’t let me talk to Jess that made me think she was hurt. I decided to call again.

“Look, I told you she was sleeping, leave  us alone.”

“Hold on. Jess is my best friend. I don’t have a clue where she’s at and I’m really worried about her! Just let me talk to her.”

“No.”

“Fine. Then where are you at?”

“We’re at my house.”

“Where’s your house?”

“Why should I tell you? I don’t know you.”

“Max? Who are you talking to?” It was Jess’ voice.

“Good! Now she’s awake, I can talk to her!” I said.

He must have handed her the phone because she answered.

“Hello? Who is this?”

“Jess. It’s Lexi. Where are you?”

“Oh, you.” She said with anger in her voice.

“Please tell me where you’re at. I’m so worried about you.”

“I’m at my step-brothers house. He’s the only one who cares about me.”

“That’s not true! Me and your mom have been so worried about you. I haven’t slept at all tonight, I thought you were dead.”

“That’s nice. Now you think I’m stupid?”

“What? I never said that.”

“You implied it.” She said.

“How?”

“You thought I would be stupid enough to kill myself?”

“I didn’t say that Jess.”

“Yeah, whatever, I don’t care, don’t call me again Lexi. Good night.”

I felt horrible and better at the same time. I felt horrible because Jess still hated me but I felt better because I knew she was safe.

I contemplated calling her mom, and decided I should call her so that she wouldn’t have to worry.

“Hi Sarah, this is Lexi.”

“Oh, Lexi, have you heard from Jess yet? I’ve been so worried about her.”

“Yeah, I just called her. She’s at Max’s house.”

“Max who?”

“Her step-brother?”

“Lexi, Jess doesn’t have a step-brother.”
