This was it. This was the important thing you were supposed to do. The thing you were destined to do, according to the prophecy that Gandalf had told you about. You were fated to do something great, but he would not tell you what. He did tell you where to begin, however. So, when the time came for the Company to leave Mirkwood, you stayed behind. True, it put you at Thranduil's mercy, but it could have been worse. At least you were human.

When he realized the Company had left you behind, Thranduil took pity on you. He released you from the dungeons. He made sure you were clean, well fed and comfortable in Mirkwood. As time went on, Thranduil found something in you that he did not expect. A friend and a confidant. He discovered that within a matter of weeks, you had come to know everything about him and he knew precious little about you. For some reason, he felt the need to remedy that.

One morning, the two of you were walking through the gardens of Mirkwood when a smile Thranduil had never seen graced your face. At first, Thranduil couldn't figure out why you were smiling so, but he followed your gaze to the butterflies flitting around. "Such small creatures to bring you such joy, Mellon," he whispered. You turned that smile on him for a moment before it fell. "I fear we may not see many more of them. If what Gandalf says is true."

Thranduil cocked his head in confusion, his long tresses falling off his shoulder slightly. "The wizard?" You nodded, turning your attention back to the butterflies. Thranduil watched you for a moment before asking the question that had been on his mind for weeks. "Why did you stay, Y/N? In Mirkwood? You had your chance to escape with Oakenshield and his band of dwarves and yet you remained."

At first, you were unsure whether or not you should tell him, but given your new close relationship, you decided to trust him. You told him everything that Gandalf had told you about the prophecy and how you were destined to do something to save lives. "I have heard this. And the wizard believes the prophecy to be about you?" You nodded and were about to say something when an elven messenger came running up to the two of you.

He said something in Elvish to Thranduil before turning and disappearing again. "What is it?" you asked seeing the look on Thranduil's face. "It appears the dragon has been vanquished. Oakenshield will march upon the mountain." Your eyes widened. Thranduil continued on to say that he would ride to Dale. He was going to aide those in need and attempt to convince Thorin to return his gems. "Will you join me?" You nodded eagerly, ready to fulfill whatever the prophecy said about you.

The journey to Dale took longer than you expected, but you were soon outside the gates of Dale, greeting the new leader of the people of Laketown. You had somewhat tuned out until they mentioned the Company. If only the three of you could have known what would become of them and yourselves.

*time skip*

As your legs began pumping faster, you prayed you would get to them in time. Ignoring Thranduil's pleas from behind you, you willed yourself to move even quicker. You had to get to them. To Fili and Kili and Thorin. You knew you had to save them.

Thranduil watched in horror and dismay as you ran away from him, deeper into the fray. There was nothing he could do to stop you and he knew it. He no longer had time to linger on the thought as more and more orcs surrounded him. He took them out one by one and by the time he turned back in the direction you had gone, you had disappeared.

For the first time in what seemed like centuries, Thranduil felt his heart clench. The unfamiliar feeling settled in his chest and stomach and he realized it was fear. Fear that you were gone. Lost to him forever. The very thought enraged him and he took it out on everything in his path until the battle was won, thanks to Thorin. The moment Thranduil had a chance, he went in search of you. How had it come to this? The king of Mirkwood searching the dead bodies for his son and for one measly human? He scoffed at that. Measly? You were anything but. Somehow, you had managed to worm your way into his heart.

Finally, he found you standing with the Durins and Bilbo. You were coated in blood, sweat and grime, but Thranduil still stared. You were talking and hugging them all until one of them gestured behind you. You looked over your shoulder at Thranduil and a smile spread across your face. Before he could register what was happening, you had thrown yourself at Thranduil, wrapping your arms around his shoulders.

When you picked your head up to look at him, Thranduil saw the same feeling in your eyes that he felt and, in an uncharacteristic moment of passion, he crashed his lips to yours. You readily returned the kiss, just happy to have him in your arms. You didn't even register the others behind you until someone cleared their throat. You broke away from Thranduil and glanced behind you. The dwarves were all looking at you in surprise before turning steely gazes on Thranduil.

You felt your cheeks heat up as they continued to stare at the two of you. You took a step back and looked at them expectantly. Thorin glared at Thranduil and, in a warning tone said, "If you hurt her, ever. I swear, by Mahal, I will run you through." Your jaw dropped open and you stared at king. "Thorin! First, you are in no position to threaten anyone. Second, I am more than capable of taking care of myself. I did just save your life after all."

Satisfied with his lack of response, you smiled at Thorin before walking away with Thranduil. "Melamin," he said softly, making you turn around. "I have no idea what that means," you told him with a laugh. Thranduil gave you the first real smile he'd given in a long time and pulled you close again. "Do you not? Allow me to show you," he said before pressing his lips to yours again. You giggled against his lips, making him pull away.

"I must beg your forgiveness, Y/N. I have treated you and your loved ones horribly as well as my own people." You reached up and cupped his cheek. "It is in the past, my love. No one can blame you for the past. Look to the future instead." You leaned up to kiss him again, unaware of eyes watching you. Gandalf smiled and laughed to himself. "The prophecy has been fulfilled. She will return light to Mirkwood," he said, turning to Thranduil's son who wore an identical smile.
