The only thing that kept Elrond going after his wives' deaths were his children. His children with his first love and you. You were his youngest daughter and he doted on you. However, as you grew, Elrond found himself growing distant from you. After all, you were mortal just as your mother had been. How long would Elrond really have with you before you died? He wasn't sure he could handle that.

So, when you hit your adolescence, he began to distance himself from you emotionally. It hurt him to look at you growing older right before his eyes. He wanted his little girl back. He never wanted you to grow old. But what he didn't realize was that he was hurting you as well. At least, not until he overheard you asking Arwen one afternoon.

"Why doesn't Father care for me any longer?" The words hit Elrond in the heart in a way he never thought possible. It got him thinking about how different things had been when you were younger. About how he had kept you close all those years.

"Papa, look! Look!" you cried, showing him the dress you had made with Arwen's help. Elrond smiled and pulled you into his lap. You sat there, chatting happily as Elrond continued his work. You didn't seem to care that he was only half listening. The only thing that mattered to you was spending time with him. So, you continued prattling on as human children usually did. You took after your mother that way.

A few years later, Elrond beamed with pride when you joined the other musicians in the gardens. It was your first time playing in front of others. You were still young, a baby by elf standards, but you were determined to do everything the others could do. So, you stepped out with the others, Lindir at your side. Elrond could see your nerves as you began to play. Was it perfect? No. But the joy and pride in your face made up for any mistakes you made. When it was over, you ran to him and hugged him tightly. "Did you like it, Father?"

When you were sixteen in mortal years, things began to change. You had blossomed into a beautiful young woman. Nearly full grown by human standards. How long did he have left with you? Elrond knew he would lose you eventually. To either death or marriage. Could his heart take that? It would hard enough losing his immortal children to marriage one day. Could he truly handle losing you as well? The answer to that was easy. No. So, he did the only thing he could think of. He protected his heart through distance.

Now it seemed you were suffering. At the age of nineteen, you were missing your father's care and guidance. You thought he didn't love you. That hurt him more than he would ever admit, but he wasn't sure what to do about it. After a lot of thought, Elrond realized he was being selfish once again. You needed him. If he was destined to lose you young, he needed to enjoy his moments with you that he could. To that end, Elrond went in search of you.

"Y/N," your head snapped up and you gave him a sad smile. "Yes, Father?" Your brows furrowed at whatever expression you saw on his face. You cocked your head to the side and asked, "Have I done something, Father?" Elrond smiled and assured you that you hadn't. You didn't look relieved. In fact, you looked even more confused.

"I don't understand. You no longer seek me out unless something needs to be done or I have forgotten something." Elrond frowned at that. He moved closer to you. "I know I have been distant, my daughter. I ask your forgiveness." You let your lips curl up into a smile. "Of course I forgive you. You're my father."

"I have been so concerned over losing you that I have wasted too much time." You hugged him and he felt your tears dripping onto his shoulder. "Father, you could never lose me. I know I won't live as long as you will, but I will always be your child. You're the best father I could have asked for. Even when I've married, if I ever do, I will always come to you when I need my father."

From that moment, Elrond determined that he was going to be a better father to you. He would be present in all aspects of your life that you wanted him to be. He would be supportive and encouraging. He would only accept an offer for your hand if you accepted and he would love you and your children and your children's children for the rest of his days.
