Make Them Pay

Niall's POV:

"Uhnn," I groaned, moving to a sitting position after waking up with a killer hangover.

My head was pounding, the room spun as I stood, dragging my feet heavily over to the bathroom.

I stumbled into the shower and stripped quickly, almost forgetting my boxers in my painful state.

I blasted myself with cold to both wake me up and to try and calm the headache, succeeding slightly.

I then switched to warm and let the calming water swath over me, washing away some of the grime.

I finished drowsily and continued getting presentable. It was one of the last days of the last trimester before summer.

I had an exam in my law class today, very major. I went over things I needed to know in my head as I got dressed, barely noticing Blake mirroring my earlier routine.

"Ach, my head is killing me," he grumbled on his way to shower. I chuckled, stopping instantly as the reverberation to make my head throb obnoxiously once again.

"Shh," I acted as if I heard something.

"What do you hear?"

"I hear...." I trailed off. I can't wait to mess with him, mwahaha.

"You hear...?" he said expectantly.

"I can hear your headache from over here," I snickered. Blake growled at me, slightly annoyed, and continued on his way to wash.

My head still hurt a bit when I went to take my exam. It went by quickly, and I was soon gathering my pencils, pens and eraser.

I was kinda sad that college is almost over, but I'm also not.

I was also sad that Cara won't live with me.

I sighed loudly as I left the exam.

"Bonjour, monsieur Horan," my French teacher, Madame LeBlanc, said.

I greeted her in my second language and asked how she was doing.

"Tré bien, tré bien. Et toi?" I answered her quickly, rushing to the dorm and going to see Cara.

She wasn't in her dorm, and neither was Jess.

Where was she?

~

Later on, I got a text from Cara.

'il b back soon. sirry if I worrued u.'

There were a few typos and I could tell she was rushed, but I replied anyways. I was happy she told me something. My worry was washed away.

'Okay babe. C u 2moro <3'

I was surprised and anxious about her whereabouts and what was wrong when I received her next message.

'Can I speak 2 u 2nite?'

'Baby, what's wrong!'

'I'll tell u wen I get there'

I sent her repeated texts afterwards but to no avail; she didn't respond.

I was only left with my thoughts for a few hours until I decided to go shoot some hoops in the gym.

~

I left the doors open in the gym for a bit of air circulation, though I hoped no one would join me.

I needed time alone with my second foremost passion; my first being Cara, of course.

My second passion?

Basketball, em, duh.

I practiced lay-ups and just plain dribbling, running my drills afterwards. I kept active, sweating out the stress of the suspense my girlfriend -hopefully more than that, someday- has put me through.

I stopped still in my tracks; I even dropped my basketball; when I heard a small, weak, exhausted voice call out my name from the doorway.

"Niall?"

Cara's POV:

I rushed through the front doors of the school, aiming towards the guys' dorms but stopping when I heard dribbling from the gym.

I peeked inside, my hair swinging.

I smiled with joy through the tears streaming down my face at the sight of my loving boyfriend, Niall.

"Niall?" I queried, my voice echoing throughout the mostly empty gymnasium.

He turned and dropped his basketball at the sound of my voice.

"Cara! I didn't think you'd be back this early...." He glanced at the clock and blushed. It was 10:21 p.m. Definitely not early.

I giggled and wiped some of my tears before advancing towards my blonde Irishman.

"I'm so happy I found you," I said into his shoulder after he embraced me, his large, strong arms belittling my own.

"Why, babe? What's happened?" I could hear the worry laced into his words.

My eyes glisten and saltiness begins to spill over.

"M-my Mum's wallet was stolen." He looked at me questioningly, stroking my hair soothingly.

I decided to elaborate. "In it was her bank card. They found out her pin-code, which was her birth year, which was on her driver's license, and they hacked it. Took all of our money. And because her pin-code was so obvious and was in her wallet," I sniffled, "The bank won't refund it and insurance won't work either." I took a deep breath, taking in his expression which had gotten more and more astonished as I spoke.

I drew in one last steadying breath of air before expelling my biggest problem yet..

"I can't go to college next year."

Niall's POV:

At Cara's words I felt a jolt of selfish happiness course through me. I know it's wrong, but now her reason not to move in with me is gone.

I hid my happiness, because I actually do care about her and I want to comfort her in any way possible.

"Thank you, Niall," she breathed. "But you really don't have to."

"That's where you're wrong, beautiful. I have to make you happy. Its a necessity."

"I love you Niall."

"I love you more, Cara Ribeiro."

What she didn't know is that I planned on catching the filthy bastard that did this to her and her family, and
I will make them pay for hurting her.

I will make them pay with everything they fucking have.

And I might even grind them into the dirt.

Let's hope that I'm in a good mood. For their sake.

For my sake?

I wanna be steaming angry, to cause them pain.

And I guarantee that I will.

* A FEW HOURS LATER *

"What? Goddammit man, he's out tomorrow? Why didn't you fucking tell me?" My anger boiled as I talked to one of my many sources for Chris.

I admit that I'm not proud about it, but he's messed with me, and more importantly her, one too many times.

"Yes, I want you to fucking keep an eye on him! That's what I've been paying you for!" I growled into the line.

"Fine. And more news. Ah, apparently he... lost his wallet? One of the guards found it and is keeping it until he gets out." The pieces began to click as I remembered last night and how devastated Cara was. She'd ended up sleeping with me, in her dorm anyways.

And not in the way you think; I held her and kissed her forehead but that was it.

"Wallet?" I gulped.

"Yeah...."

"Could you, ah, check the driver's license?"

"Okay...?" my source said as if I'd lost it.

"Just do it," I said. "My girlfriend's Mum's wallet was stolen and all her bank money taken, and I really don't trust this prick."

"Oh," was all he said.

"Just check for me, please?"

"Whatever."

"Remember I'm paying you."

"Yeah, yeah."

And with that he hung up.

~

Louis' POV:

Ah, shit. What've I gotten myself into?

Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit.

"Ey Chris, you are gonna keep me out of this after you get out tomorrow, right?"

Wow, I'm a crappy prison guard. Bribed with my life to commit this horrible crime.

The overly tattooed man in front of me in the jail cell, though I'm not one to talk since I'm draped in ink as well, had threatened to come after me when he got out, and kill me or murder the one I love, Harry.

This man, he's maniacal and twisted and most of all, dangerously obsessed over one girl. I think she's more trouble than she's worth.

"Whatever," he said boredly.

"That was part of the deal! I get to stay out of this mess the instant you walk out of those doors!" My aggravation was clear in the tone of my voice.

He smirked, "Deal? Ha. The deal was that you do this for me, you live. The fact that you get to stay out of this was not in the conditions I agreed to."

I clenched my fists in order not to pound the shit out of him, I really could not afford my job. Even though this mess that I'd somehow been stupidly sucked into would probably do just that, cost me my job.

I look up at the ceiling, biting my lip against any crude remarks.

He'd warned me multiple times that he'd out me to the Warden if I did anything to offend him, so I was stepping lightly, treading on eggshells.

"Alright, fine..." I sighed.

I didn't want to be doing this, stealing a poor woman's wallet and most of all, a bunch of money.

I hadn't been brave enough to ask what it was for or why this specific woman, but I have a feeling it has something to do with a girl named Cara and an "asshole," as Chris puts it, called Niall.

"Oh, you should've seen her. She was so goddamn beautiful. And she was all mine. I had her at the tip of my fingers, I think it was safe to say she loved me, and then he took her away from me." Chris emphasized "he" with bitter conviction in his tone.

I could tell he hated that guy, whoever "Niall" was, with every fibre of his being.

However tainted and twisted those fibres were.

"How much money?" He said as if he hadn't just been swooning over the Cara girl.

I sighed reluctantly. "Twenty grand."

"Was that all of it?"

"... Yes."

"It had better be." And it was, I took all of it like he said for me to.

I'd hated every minute of it, but I'd still done it for my life.

Saying those words, I knew exactly how scummy and selfish I really was.

And I knew exactly what to do.

"Her last name is Ribeiro, right?"

"Why do you fucking want to know?"

"I want to see if your claims of how beautiful she is are true. Maybe even distance her from that asshat you speak of?" I lied, convincingly.

He laughed. "Then yes. Her name is Ribeiro. Niall's last name is Horan if you need it. Distance them, please."

"May I ask why you did this... and what it has to do with Cara?" The realization hit me like a 200-mph train. The last name in the driver's license was Ribeiro. I stole this from Cara's mother.

"That old woman? That was Cara's mum." He laughed. "And I heard that Niall asked her to move in with him during her next year of college, and she wasn't planning to go unless she had a place outside of the dorms to stay. So I kept the two apart by getting rid of her reason to live with him."

Chris' reasoning was sound enough, I guess. But his story about Cara, Niall, and college doesn't make sense.
