“I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, leaning on the everlasting arms.”  Elisha Hoffman

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and He shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.  Deuteronomy 33:27

Solace:  “to give comfort to in grief or misfortune”  Merriam-Webster Dictionary

One day Anthony Showalter, a music composer and the principal of the Southern Normal Music Institute in Dalton Georgia, came home from work and discovered that he had received two letters from from a couple of his former students.  The letters bore the heartbreaking news that these former pupils had both lost their wives.  Looking to the Bible for comfort, Showalter selected Deuteronomy 33:27 and these words came to mind, “Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.”  And so the chorus that would become so familiar and such a comfort to millions for decades to come was penned.  Showalter then commissioned his friend Elisha Albright Hoffman to write the rest of the words, after which he gave his nephew and student Sam Duncan a class assignment to compose the melody.  The resulting hymn has been giving solace ever since.

Leaning On The Everlasting Arms

What a fellowship, what a joy divine,

Leaning on the everlasting arms;

What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,

Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms;

Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.

O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,

Leaning on the everlasting arms;

O how bright the path grows from day to day,

Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms;

Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.

What have I to dread, what have I to fear,

Leaning on the everlasting arms;

I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,

Leaning on the everlasting arms.
