Imagine being close with Alaric and getting sad and upset when Jenna comes back to life and you think you'll lose him to her
For the past two months, you and Alaric Saltzman had grown close. Very close. In fact, you were expecting and dreaming a happy future with him in it, including lots of hugs, kisses and love. He seemed to like you too, and you had nearly kissed but your common friend Damon always seemed to have the worst timings. You and Alaric obviously had some kind of feelings for each other, but somehow you were never capable of admitting them or freeing them and living in the utter bliss of being in love, with each other, together.
But there was the undeniable truth that you both enjoyed the company the other could offer, whether it was with Damon tagging along or not. Alaric amused you with his jokes and comments, while you delighted and charmed him with your smile, laugh and rambling about topics you were passionate about. There were evident sparks between you, waiting to be ignited, and you often seemed to have the match in hand but Damon flattened the mood easily. You loved his and Alaric's friendship, and being a part of it, but your heart craved for a deeper relationship with Ric.
Because you knew well that in one moment, you and him could laugh, have fun, love each other without saying it, but in another you could lose him. Or he could lose you. And you weren't wrong - in Mystic Falls, everything was possible so when Elena ran to you with happy news, you weren't surprised, but disappointed for sure, amongst with several other emotions. You and Alaric were sitting in Mystic Grill, your fingers intertwined, another moment nearly gone right but it slipped from you when Elena indeed stormed into the hangout and straight to you.
"Ric! Y/N!", she called out, and Alaric cleared his throat while pulling his hand away from yours. Sure, there was a few awkward moments here or there because after all, you were Elena's friend, and in love with his guardian and teacher. But you had learned to accept the age difference, though you were certain that Alaric had not.
"What's up, Elena?", you asked, putting a fake smile but luckily she couldn't see through. She looked so enthusiastic and happy, she had no time to notice your negativity which was utterly all you felt towards her right now. When Damon wasn't there to interrupt, someone else had to be and now it just happened to be Elena. And after hearing what she'd have to say, you would have preferred a million Damons.
"Jenna's back", she breathed out, shattering your heart with only those two words, "it's a long story, but she's back. She's home right now", while her smile spread out only more. You knew that Alaric used to love Jenna, a lot, and therefore your heart broke - it was obvious that now he would fall for her all over again. Everything that you thought you had with Alaric, gone, just like that. Your eyes turned blurry and you couldn't hear anymore, you just wanted to faint and let go of the moment, you didn't want to be there, you didn't want to live in it. You didn't want to witness that happy, thrilled smile on Alaric's lips but you did.
"Sorry, Y/N, I'll make this up to you, but I have to go", he said and then ran out of the Grill. You bit your lip, wanting to cry but to save yourself from public humiliation, you stayed strong and got up to leave, but not to the Gilbert house. You wanted to go home, and never come out of the door again. You were already embarrassed though, you had such high expectations of your relationship with Alaric but obviously one of his dead ex-girlfriends had to come back. That was just your luck.
"What's going on with your and Ric?", Elena asked, somewhat annoyed but tried to look concerned for you. She took your arm before you could leave, wanting an answer and in return you shot her a glare that you attempted to show as a mean one but with the slowly rising tears, you barely succeeded. Your heart had broken, you had very likely lost the one you loved to someone he probably loved more than he loved you.
"You know, judge all you want, Elena, hate on me and feel disgusted because of the age difference, but do keep in mind that's he's 37, while your current boyfriend is way past 150, just like your previous one", you stated coldly, and then yanked your arm away from her to continue your way out of the place.
You were at the exit of Mystic Grill, when you bumped into Damon. He saw your tears and your obviously upset state, and that was why he aimed to take your arm while he asked what was going on but instead of answering, you fled from him and Elena, and everyone else and headed straight to your very own bed where you finally allowed yourself to break down.
After stumbling into your house, your bedroom, and onto the bed, you began sobbing loudly and without control. It hurt like hell, it felt like your heart had been torn out of your chest and stomped on, and you hated it. You had felt heartache before, but never like this - this beat every kind of pain you had ever felt. You had already thought that Alaric could be yours, and you could be his, but there you were now, corrected. Sure, you were happy of Jenna's return, but it brought you too much pain to bear, you actually wished for her to die again.
That was how deep your love for Alaric ran. You had known that you were desperately falling for him, but now, it was proven harder than you had expected.
You had lost him, hadn't you? That broke you. That was what brought you to tears, what caused you to claw the sheets as you begged for the horrible agony to leave you alone, prayed for the pain and the heartache to go away. But it didn't. It wouldn't. It just continued to tear you apart, break you from the inside, ruin you and kill you.
Later that night, there was a knock on your door. Soft, but loud enough to reach your ears. You were still on your bed, a trembling mess but at least the crying had ceased after hours of sobbing all alone. You were clutching the covers against your chest, and letting the last tears roll from your eyes and onto the pillow under your head. You listened to the knocks that got louder and faster with each passing moment, clearly the person behind was growing restless and concerned of you.
You knew it was Alaric. You also knew that seeing him would break your heart again and again. Yet you stood up, wiped your eyes and stumbled to the front door which you slowly opened, only to reveal a worried Alaric who immediately pulled you into a hug. He didn't have time to see your broken expression or the sadness shining in your face which would allow him to see the way your whole heart had shattered to bits. He just held you, and you tried to hug him back, wanting to enjoy the embrace you feared to be the last one.
You loved it, you loved all of it. The way he held you so tightly, so fondly, and the way you could actually be so close to him. The way he smelled so wonderful, felt so warm and loving, so safe and welcoming. He sighed, and you did too, and after minutes of holding you in his arms at your door, he let go of you to see your face that you tried to hide in infinite shame. You looked awful, and weak, and you didn't want him to see you like that.
"Y/N", Alaric whispered, his voice impossible to read. "Y/N, please don't hide yourself from me", he begged, and took your hands into his, forcing you to reveal your face. Your eyes flickered over to his, and you shivered at the intense, but fond eye contact you were left in. Alaric turned sad instantly, he just had to see your expression and that was enough to bring him sorrow and guilt. He felt like he was the one to blame, and if you had known, you would have laughed. You were both so hopelessly broken and dumb, so clueless of what to do and how to do even though you had both experienced heartbreak before.
"Is this because of-- her? Did I cause this? Y/N, I am so sorry, you know I love you--", Alaric stuttered, but you fought back and interrupted him.
"Do you?", you insisted, having to admit that hearing him say that brought an excited tingle into you but a part of you tried to force into not believing it. "Do you love me, Ric? Or do you love Jenna? Because I don't want you to ponder and choose, I want you to know that you love me. I know I love you, and for a moment, I thought I had you, but we live in Mystic Falls so that was obviously a mistake", you chuckled, and as much as Alaric wanted to do the same and feel light and happy, he couldn't.
"I've been through this before, I know what it feels like to be someone's second choice, left behind another girl. And I honestly can't blame you if you love Jenna more than you love me, you two have history and she's really pretty--", you began, but it was now his turn to stop you.
"You."
Your eyes widened, and you let out a "what?", to express your shock, which caused Alaric to smile.
"It's you, Y/N, I love you", he spoke. "I went to see Jenna, and believe me, it was lovely but I got over her a long time ago. I can't say that I'm not happy to have her back but I wouldn't choose her over you. I thought I made it clear that I'm in love with you, but I guess I still need some help from Damon", Alaric continued, earning a giggle from you. He broke into a smile, and confessed his love to you once more before pulling you into a kiss.
His lips felt right on yours. It was sweet and amazing, just how you had imagined it to be, and you couldn't help but smile while yours lips moved perfectly against each other. The broken pieces of your heart got together and you felt whole and fixed again, just like you always did with Alaric. He made you happy and complete.
Your nose brushed against Alaric's, and you placed your hand on his cheek while his were on your waist, pulling you closer to his body. When the kiss finally broke, you were out of breath and so was he, causing you both to chuckle. You remained there, in his arms, and closed your eyes while resting your head on his shoulder. He walked inside your house, and shut the door behind him, happy to have you and happy to hold you.
The rest of the night was spent on your couch, repeating the love confessions to each other, cuddling and being happy just like you had imagined you to be with him, for a long time now. It was just like a dream, but now, true.
