Chapter Thirty-Three
For a few seconds there was silence, a stifling and overbearing silence. No one uttered a word, no one moved an inch. It was as if time had frozen. The one thing I knew that definitely was frozen was me. I was no longer on the ground gasping greedily for air, I was subdued and meek.
My body recognised the danger I was in, before it was clinging to life, gasping for air and vibrating with fear, this time it was vibrating with adrenaline. I was frozen but I knew what I had to do, my mind and heart were screaming one word at me.
Run!
Whatever reasons the Alpha had for not killing me would not matter to his cousin, that was her brother, her family and supposedly I had destroyed. While the Alpha may have believed what an evil monster his cousin was I highly doubt Teresa would agree. Stephanie said they were close and had a good relationship so I'm sure nothing I say will convince her that he was anything but a good man.
"Alessandro."
That one word had me standing up and ready to leave. I knew I wouldn't be able to outrun her, but maybe if the Alpha distracted her I could get a head start. He must have read my mind because the Alpha grabbed my hand in a successful attempt to stop me from moving. His grip was punishing like I expected it to be but it was tight and secure.
"Alessandro." Teresa said again, this time coming closer towards her. Her eyes drifted down to our hands and stayed there for a brief second before she looked up again. "Where is Harlan?"
The Alpha didn't answer her, maybe it was wishful thinking but I was hoping he was using this time to come up with a believable answer to explain what he said. I was praying silently that he wouldn't hand me over. I had no doubt that Teresa would have anything but mercy for me once she finds out that the Alpha believed I had killed him.
"The human girl, she did something didn't she?" Teresa voice was filled with frustration and anger. "Why are you not saying anything?"
"You are not to touch her." Is the first thing the Alpha said to his cousin which wasn't such a good idea as it seemed to only infuriate her further.
"Why?" She snarled, coming closer. "Why are you so interested in her?"
I would like to know the answer to that question too!
I understood at first why he kept both Cami and I here, he believed we had something to do with his cousin's disappearance but he wasn't too sure. That made sense to me but this didn't. I'm extremely grateful that he didn't kill me and I don't think he will end my life for 'killing' his cousin- perhaps he might do for other things as he seems to have a terrible temper but why was he keeping me here?
He wasn't going to punish me for what happened to his cousins, the reasons were still undisclosed, so why was he keeping the woman he believed ended his cousin's life here with him where he would see me every day and be reminded of it?
He must believe his cousin was an evil rapist monster or else I wouldn't be alive, however, I knew he must have loved his cousin or else why would he have gone searching for him when he disappeared? He sent Beta Kieran first to look into it before he joined in, he was desperate to find him too. He wanted his cousin back.
Most of the things the Alpha said or did made no sense to me.
"Who is she to you?" Teresa's voice was more softer now and this time it was what she said that made no sense to me.
What did she mean by 'who is she to you?' I'm obviously his prisoner, his captive.
That question clearly made sense to the Alpha because his whole stance changed. "She is nothing to me."
The words shouldn't have affected me, I was nothing to him and he was nothing to me but it did. I didn't like hearing it, I wanted him to take back his words.
This place is definitely making me loopy!
Teresa looked unconvinced but didn't press further on the matter, she reverted back to her original question. "Where is Harlan?"
The Alpha gave her no response as he tugged my hand and pulled me towards him as he began walking back to his office. I half walked, half jogged behind him as I tried to keep up. We were there in a matter of seconds and he pushed me into his office.
"Don't leave this room." He slammed the door behind him before I could even respond.
To be honest I don't think I want to leave the room, I would rather stay here where I was hidden from his cousin that would most likely kill me once she finds out what happened to her brother.
I couldn't help but wonder about what he would say to her. Would he tell her the truth? I shuddered at this possibility as I knew what the outcome of that would be for me. She would be angry and rightfully so, if anything happened to Cami I would-
Cami! Phone!
I spun so quickly almost lost my balance and fell over but I didn't care. The Alpha had a phone on his desk and I could use it to call Cami! Keeping one eye on the door, I lifted the receiver and held it to my phone. Hope filled my body as I heard the dialling tone and I stopped myself from squealing out loud.
Not wanting to wait another second, I began dialling Cami's number. I had no idea how long the Alpha would take, he might come back at any second.
Come on! Pick up the phone Cami!
After what felt like hours a voice spoke on the other end of the receiver. "Hello?" The voice sounded timid and unsure but I recognised it.
"Cami!" I spluttered out, my voice croaky from the earlier assault.
"Nala?" This time Cami's voice was much louder and clearer. "Oh my god, Nala is that you?"
Tears welled up in my eyes and my chest tightened as I heard my baby sister's voice. "Yes." I croaked out. "It's me."
"Nala." Cami sobbed through the line. She kept repeating my name over and over again as she cried hysterically.
Waves of relief and happiness flooded my body, she was alive, she was okay! I felt as though a huge wave had been lifted off my shoulder and I couldn't help but join in and cry too.
It was like that for a minute or so, we were both sobbing through the phone calling each other's name out. Once I started to gain more composure, I took in a deep breath and cleared my throat causing me to wince slightly.
"Cami, I don't have much time. Are you okay? Are you with Uncle Tom?" I fired out the questions ignoring the slightly burning pain in my throat.
"Nala, I miss you so m-"
I felt guilty doing this but I cut her off. "Cami, answer my questions I don't have much time."
Through her sobs, Cami answered my questions. "Yeah I'm fine and I'm at Uncle Tom's house with everyone. When are you going to come back Nala?"
I don't know.
Now that there's a chance Teresa knew what I supposedly did my chances of leaving this place were very slim.
"Soon, I promise." I lied as I closed my eyes. "I'm going to do my best to get out of here." That wasn't a lie, I would try my damn hardest to get out of here.
"I miss you Nala. I've been so scared th-"
My eyes snapped opened. "Scared? Why are you scared? Did something happen?"
"No, no." Cami replied quickly. "I'm just scared about everything and it's hard being without you."
"You need to stay strong Cami." I whispered trying my hardest to keep my composure. "I'll be with you soon." I looked at the door that was still closed. "I have to go, I-"
"No, please don't go. Talk to me!"
"I'll call you again soon, okay? Take care of yourself, I love you."
Cami started crying again. "I love you too."
I put the phone and moved away from the Alpha's desk. I thought hearing Cami's voice would make me feel better and while it was a relief to find out she was okay hearing her voice made this separation even harder.
She's alive and she's okay, focus on that Nala!
Drying my eyes with my sleeves I took in deep breaths and tried to think of the positives in this situation, there was hardly any, and focus on that. I was alive- for now-, Cami was alive, that's all that mattered.
Thinking about the positives didn't last that long and my mind drifted off to what the Alpha and his cousin were talking about. Lots of horrible scenarios played out in my head about what would happen to me, each one getting worse and worse.
I'm not sure how long I paced around the room thinking of the worst, it could have been half an hour or an hour but that's how the Alpha found me when he entered the room.
Before the Alpha could say anything I fired a question at him. "Did you tell her?"
He didn't respond, instead he met my eyes and frowned. "Why are your eyes red?"
Huh?
Not wanting either of us to get side-tracked, I repeated the question again. "Did you tell her what...I did?"
This time the Alpha answered me and my heart dropped.
"Yes."
