The last week at Hogwarts felt different to the rest, Emerald and Malfoy were on almost friendly terms, she had got closest with Pansy, Blaise, Theo and Flint who as a group had become the talk of Hogwarts. As the week drew to an end she felt a lot more comfortable in her new school. The same couldn't be said for the rest of the Hogwarts students, news that Emerald could do things beyond their capabilities has spread like wildfire and had ensured that most of the students, other than the Slytherins, stayed a good distance away from her.

She stood in her room with Blaise sat on her bed after packing all her things for her trip home for the holidays, she loved Christmas as a child, when they were very young they used to stay up all night trying to catch a glimpse of the muggle Santa Claus. They knew he wasn't real but it didn't take away any of the excitement for the two children, as they got a little bit older they would sneak round to the Zabini household with the help of Emerald's favourite house elf ,Monty and it became a ritual for the three children.

Emerald smiled at the fond memory, Christmas had never quite been the same after her brother died and then she moved house leaving her childhood memories and best friend behind, she couldn't help but wonder if she'd be different if she had still had her twin and best friend in her life, maybe less cold, closed off and untrusting...

"Whatcha thinking about" Blaise's voice broke her out of her trance

"Just Christmas " she answered honestly

"I hate Christmas"

"What!" She spun round to face him "how can anyone hate Christmas with all the snow and hot chocolate and sparkly decorations.."

"I just do. Okay" he snapped

She looked at him through narrowed eyes
"But why?, you used to love it when we were children, even more than Marcellus and that's something considering the boy was obsessed with it, come on don't you remember when he tripped and dropped your mothers pie and smushed his chin right into it, looked like that Santa fellow, or when me and you set that tinsel trap for father and Monty walked into it by mista..."

"Exactly!" he said "I hate it because it reminds me of you and all the memories we had and then I think about it and remember that I really don't have my best friend anymore anymore and suddenly Christmas is just a normal day for me because nothing changes" he finished not looking her in the eye

She looked at him surprised that her leaving had meant that much to him, they were inseparable as children something that annoyed Marcellus to no end, if someone was on the receiving end of an inconvenient prank they would always know just where to look but as they grew older they had drifted apart

She walked towards her bed and sat down next to him on it
"Blaise I'll always be your best friend, stupid and you'll always have me, you really think you could get rid of me that easily do you?" She joked

He looked at her,cheering up slightly, pulling her into a side hug ,a small smile breaking out "no I suppose I can't" he fake sighed "come to Hogwarts to get some peace and you pop up again" he feigned being annoyed

"Well if that's the case I shall be leaving and taking your Christmas present with me" she said sweetly, snatching a box out of her suitcase and running towards the door with it

"Colloportus" Blaise said pointing his wand at the door and looking at her smugly

"Dang it" Emerald said with a sparkle in her eye, she knew very well she could unlock it with just a click of her fingers but she decided to play along

She handed him the box sighing in mock defeat
"Well open it then, before I work out how to unlock the door"

He unwrapped it carefully popping open the box, a look of shock covering his face, inside the box was a silver watch with a large green stone as the face, it looked beautiful and very expensive, don't get me wrong he was used to expensive tastes but this was something else

"Em how the hell did you..?"

"Smart that's how" she replied

"Em it's amazing" he breathed

"Yeah well I figured I had a lot of birthdays and Christmas's to make up for"

He engulfed her in a hug, smiling wildly
"Thank you so much I'm never taking it off" he looked at her "I'm owling you yours on Christmas Day because I can't trust you not to open it until then" he said playfully

"You could just give it to me on the day then"

"I wish I could , Mothers got some out of town guests comming and she'll skin me alive if I miss it" he said sadly

"I know she does"

"Wait how... ?" He looked at her questionably

She sent him an all knowing look

"Oh my merlin are you serious !?" He exclaimed

"No I'm Emerald, we don't talk about Sirius" she joked

"Wha.. oh shut up you sod, come here" he grabbed her spinning her round

They both danced round throwing old bits of parchment around like confetti excited that they would get to spend Christmas together again, laughing so loudly that they didn't hear a knock on the door

"Em is Blaise here? Theo's asking for him" Draco spoke curtly, then stopped when he saw the state of the room, he sighed and rolled his eyes "Salazar you two are like kids"

"Shove off Malfoy" they both chimed

Blaise started towards the door "I won't be long" he turned round "try not to kill the albino twat" he said laughing and exiting the room, ducking the quill Malfoy threw at him

"Prick" Draco muttered before ducking the book that Emerald threw at him.

"Say that again and I'll hex your teeth green" she laughed

He stayed rooted to the spot looking uncomfortable, like he wanted to say something but couldn't bring himself to do so

"Do you want something or have you just been petrified" she asked still grinning

He still looked uncomfortable but he spoke quietly "My father requests your presence at a meeting tonight"

"Tonight? Sorry no can do. My father wants me back straight away after Hogwarts"

"He'll be there too"

Emerald shot her glare over to him questioning what he meant before coming to a realisation
"And who else will be there?" She stated carefully

"Nott's parents, Crabbe and Goyle's parents, my aunt Bellatrix and Uncle Rudolphus, his brother Rabastian , a few of their friends....." he trailed off

"Death eater friends" she said bluntly

"Yes"

"And Voldemort?" She said unfazed

"Shh will you keep your voice down!" He whispered "but yes he will"

She took a good look at Malfoy ,his already pale features looked a sickly white and there was a look of dread gracing his handsome face.

"And what if I don't want to go" she challenged , unbothered by the Dark Lords presence at the upcoming meeting

"Then he'll recruit Blaise"

Malfoy glanced at Emerald, noticing a flash of something he'd never seen before in her eyes before her jaw set and her eyes went hard in an unsettling manner.

"I'll be there" her tone was low and Malfoy knew that if it had been anyone else she'd have refused to go. Maybe even a sent the powerful Dark Lord a not so subtle 'screw you' owl.
But he also knew that she'd never risk Blaise's safety over her own stubbornness, she cared about him too much and the Dark Lord knew that.

She marched towards the door, a look of fury gracing her beautiful features and Malfoy smartly stepped out of the way knowing that at this moment he'd end up in the hospital wing if he got in her way.

"Where are you going?" He called after her

She turned on the stairs sending him a look that chilled him to his bones

"I'm going to send an owl ,I believe a family reunion is in order don't you?"
