Before I get started, I'd like to say that I know not all theatre fans are like this.
Random theatre fans: I don't like Six or The Greatest Showman because they're not historically accurate!
Those same theatre fans: *in love with Hamilton*
I'm not saying you have to like Six or The Greatest Showman, I just think it's dumb that people hate those two for being historically inaccurate, yet they love Hamilton, which isn't all that accurate either. (Just to clarify, I love Hamilton, Six, and The Greatest Showman.)
Random theatre fans: film to stage adaptations are dumb! Why can't broadway be more original?!
Those same theatre fans: *in love with the tumblr four*
I'm not saying you have to like film to stage adaptations, and I would LOVE an original musical on broadway, but everything is inspired by something, even the "original" musicals.
I used the tumblr four as an example for this because those are the main ones people tend to pay attention to, and three of the four were based off of other things. BMC was based off of a novel, Heathers was based off of a movie, and Hamilton was based off of a real person's life, as well as a biography about that person. The only one out of the tumblr four that wasn't based off of anything was DEH (as far as I know). (The musical came before the novel, btw. A lot of people tend to forget that.)
