Even before I saw the pic above, I thought there were obvious similarities between Rapunzel and Johanna.
1. Both were taken from their parents at a young age.
2. Both are blonde (yet Sondheim has an obsession with describing their hair as "yellow", lol).
3. Both are locked away, and not allowed to leave.
4. Both fall in love with a guy, and that guy tries to help free them.
5. Both are sopranos.
I've also noticed their similarities with Cosette, but I feel like Cosette's situation is a bit different. Valjean was actually like a parental figure rather than some weirdo kidnapper. Also, Cosette wasn't really "locked away", 'cause Valjean still let her leave the house sometimes.
P.S. Anthony Hope and Marius Pontmercy are not just "dumba*s tenors", thank you very much!
