Landing on the branch of a sturdy oak tree, Tiberius gazed down at the squirrel nibbling on an acorn. Strangely though, he didn't go after it like he usually would. He didn't even feel like hunting. Sighing, he looked up at the clouds. His mind was filled up with too many thoughts and his heart hurt.

Suddenly, the squirrel ran off. Confused, Tiberius then heard barking. But it wasn't a dog, it was a fox. It also sounded like there was a cat. Silently, the old hawk flew towards the scene to investigate. Hidden amongst the branches of a maple tree, he saw a dark gray cat swatting at a red fox. The pair seemed to be squabbling over a dead sparrow. As he watched, Tiberius saw that the cat was very skinny and was bleeding heavily from a wound on its shoulder. However, they appeared to have the upper hand in the fight. At last, the fox turned tail and left. Triumphant, the cat picked up the sparrow.

Impressed, Tiberius was about to leave when he heard a rustle. Looking back down, he saw the fox coming back. Growling, the old hawk decided to intervene and dived, talons outstretched. The fox howled in pain as the hawk raked its face. But that didn't stop it as it lunged forward and sank its fangs into Tiberius's left flank. Hissing, the cat jumped and latched onto the fox's face, causing it to let the old hawk go.

Shaking himself, Tiberius got up just in time to see the fox bite down on the cat's leg and fling them against a tree. It didn't get up. Eyes narrowing, the hawk slashed at the fox's face repeatedly until, with a yelp of defeat, it ran with its tail tucked between its legs. Panting, Tiberius limped over to the cat. But it had already breathed its last breath. Sighing, the old hawk sniffed the air.

The scent he caught shocked him...
