'I know', Sirius said.

Remus froze on the stairs, his back still towards Sirius. He was just walking back to the portrait of the Fat Lady, to give the password (moonstone - ironically, as tonight was the night of the full moon). He felt his heart beat faster in his chest. How could Sirius possibly know? Who else did he tell? Did he hate him now? He decided to play it ignorant.

'What do you mean?' he answered, his back still towards Sirius, who hadn't moved either.

'I know where you're going tonight and why', he replied, voice stronger and bold now. 'Please look at me.'

Slowly Remus turned around, trying to maintain a blank and unreadable expression on his face. He turned around, waiting to face an angry and scared Sirius a few stairs below him. However, he found himself facing him with an almost concerned look. Remus facade dropped immediately, he couldn't help it. Never had anyone looked at him like that, knowing what he is.

'So?' Sirius asked, slowly climbing the stairs, still the same look on his face. His brows furrowed as he didn't understand why Remus looked so scared. It would be better now, right? They could be more open to each other now that he had discovered his secret? he thought.

'So what?' Remus said.

'Is it true? Are you going outside tonight and turn?'

Remus hesitated. Part of him wanted to lie, as he had always done. But the other part of him wanted to desperately tell Sirius. He wanted to get it off his chest, be done with the lies and just be honest to his friend. After all, Sirius hadn't stormed off or shouted at him for being a monster. Maybe it could work out alright if he said yes. Do not tell anyone, he heard his father say. They'll despise you for what you are, it's best if no one knows for your own and other's safety. Why would anyone love a werewolf?
Tears stung in his eyes. But Sirius did love him, right? 'Yes, I am, Sirius', escaped his mouth before his fathers words came back into his mind convincing him to lie.

'Al right', Sirius said as he came to a halt before Remus on the same staircase. 'I don't care, Rey', he said, looking into his eyes. Why was the boy so frightened, he thought. Are those tears in his eyes?

'You don't care..' Remus said softly, staring back. 'You don't care that I am to turn into a monster? A monster that would kill anything within its reach when the moon rises?' He tried to make it sound casual as if it made it any less awful. Oh only if it was.

'What are you talking about?' Sirius exclaimed, his eyes sad. 'You're not a monster. You're one of the kindest people I have ever met. Just because you turn every month doesn't mean you're a bad person. There's nothing wrong with you.'

'Nothing wrong with me?' Remus exclaimed. As much as he wanted to admit that he needed hearing those words Sirius had just said, wanting them to be true, it just wasn't the case. 'Sirius, I could literally kill you if you were near me on the full moon. In an instant.'

'But that isn't you! You're not in your own mind then. You can't blame yourself, Remus. Please, don't say such things about yourself. You are a great person, who have told you otherwise?' Sirius demanded. It was heartbreaking to see the boy right before him, only twelve but severely hurt, repeating those words apparently other people have said to him.

'That is probably what everyone would say, Sirius, you don't understand. My parents kept it hidden from other people because of it. They knew no one could love me, let alone like me, if they knew what I am.'

'I don't care that you are a werewolf.' Sirius said bluntly. It was the first time the word had come up, Remus had specifically and knowingly avoided it the whole conversation. Still, it hurt him to hear it from Sirius, because it meant he really had discovered his secret. He looked away from his eyes, couldn't bear to look into them.

But Sirius put his hand on his cheek and pushed the blonde curls out of Remus' face, moving his head towards him so he was forced to look at him. 'I really don't, Rey. You're still my best friend. It changes nothing.'

A lump rose in Remus' throat. He couldn't talk. Tears rolled out of his eyes but he didn't bother to hide them. No one had ever said such words to him and even though his mind tried to convince him that they were lies and Sirius would be off in a minute to tell everyone about him being a werewolf, Sirius' eyes said that the words were indeed true. He stared into those grey eyes. 'Thank you', was the only thing he could say.

'A werewolf isn't enough to break our friendship, Remus' and a grin came over Sirius face. 'You'd have to come up with something better than that'.

Remus rolled his eyes.

'Now that's the Remus I know!', Sirius laughed as he threw an arm around Remus - which was getting difficult, because Remus was growing faster than Sirius, but nevertheless Remus felt himself smile for the first time since Sirius encountered him on the stairs - and together they went back into the common room. Still as best friends, still both the same person, only one of them as a werewolf. Not that that changed anything.
