"When @mishacollins is secretly a country singer."
With it is a link to a YouTube video titled, "Castiel is a country singer?!"
Castiel's finger hovers above the retweet button. He knows that's what Lucifer — and everyone else who saw his tweet — expects; a retweet with some sarcastic remark towards his brother. But maybe...
He goes back to the poll he took the day before, checking the final results: 80% want an album, 2% don't want one this year, 11% never want another one, and 7% just chose "kill yourself." He scrolls through the responses to the person who wanted him to give the fans something to hold them over until his next single.
He memorizes the username, them retweets Lucifer's tweet about the video simply saying that Twitter user's name and, "you mean something like that? :)"
He doesn't have to wait long for a response from that person. Apparently, a mention from Castiel Novak takes priority over most things in life.
"HOLY SHIT YOU REMEMBERED."
Castiel chuckles. He loves watching fans' reactions to interacting with him, online and in person.
"Of course. Wasn't going to leave you hanging like that."
"You're awesome oh my god I love you so much you don't even knowwww."
This is the type of thing that always gives him a case of the happies. It's always nice to see that he still means something to people, and isn't just the international symbol for disappointment.
He just replies with a heart emoji — is it weird for a guy to have all the heart emojis in his recent emojis? — because he knows he'd never really be able to express how much his fans' support means to him.
He gets a response of, "Come to Australia pleaseeeee I've never gotten to see you perform!!!!"
Castiel just ignores that message. He doesn't want to stir up rumors, and any response he gives would do just that. And it's not like he can answer every tweet he gets. No one is going to question it. Hopefully.
"Twitter you is adorable," Dean tells him, looking up from his own phone because that's what life has become; "hanging out" and ignoring each other while on your phone.
"Why is Twitter me adorable?" Castiel asks.
"The way you talk to fans," Dean clarifies. "You've got to be making that kid's day right now."
"I doubt it."
Dean scoffs. "Look at her profile. Her cover photo is you and Misha. Her bio specifically says she's a huge fan of yours. You literally just tagged her in a post that had no relation to her. There's no way you're not making her day, really."
"Well, yeah, so it'll be cool for the day, but that's about it."
Dean just gapes at him. Finally, he says, "Cas. You're her favorite celebrity in the world, and you acknowledged her. Trust me, that's probably going to be the highlight of her childhood." Seeing that he's clearly unconvinced, Dean says incredulously, "You really don't know how much that means to people, do you?"
"Not much?" Castiel guesses.
"It means the world to most people. Why do you think you're still popular? It's not really about the music anymore; it's about keeping your name around, and you've never been in a celebrity fight — well, except that one time with me, but that's different. You don't have the famous Twitter beef to keep yourself relevant.
"You have fans tweeting at you, desperate for a reply, because it means the world to them, and you're just about the only A-list celebrity that's an actual possibility with. It can be the only bright spot in a person's darkest days. You've got some serious power when it comes to making people happy, whether you know it or not."
Castiel looks down at his phone, and slowly, a smile spreads across his face. He's never quite thought of it that way. That alone is enough to make him glad he made his Twitter again. He makes a mental note to acknowledge more tweets, even with just a like. What does he have to lose by scrolling through his mentions, anyway, other than his self esteem?
