Write right about rights

94 15 11

Writing's a privilege, and a right
One that should not be used in spite
Words rear on my tongue, like foam on a wave
Some syllables simply bubble away
Or break brashly on the bank
Too harsh, they say.

Freedom of speech, the bill of rights
Used as rationale to fuel fucking fights
Disregarding the struggle, forgetting the fall
Claiming that they know it all
In jeering cat-calls
They believe they stand tall

Apparently people are above reproach
Although they dared to encroach
With a lack of finesse
On the legal right to pursue happiness
Condemning a man in a dress
Or a couple of the same sex

Claiming that two genders are all there is
They think they have a right to say all this
But take a moment, role reversal
Freedom of speech isn't universal
They can't say this at all
If they're targeting people

If they took a few moments to educate themselves
Rather than pulling bullshit from shelves
They'd know that using freedom of speech as a shield
Is all very well, but the words they wield
Don't fall under that field
Their lips should stay sealed

They try to write groups of people out of existence
Then act surprised at the negative comments
When others oppose them they appeal
To a legal document that they feel
Covers their backs, but that's not real
Unlike the people whose happiness they steal.

We are real.
Their delusions aren't.
Don't leave your life to chance.

I'm not that proud of this poem, but it is something I wanted to publish. You see, all too often people claim freedom of speech as an excuse for their actions, when in reality they simply need to read the bill of rights and take their heads out of their arses.

Freedom of speech isn't applicable to everything.

If someone is promoting hate about a group of individual due to sexuality, gender, religion, race and so on, then it's not legal.

I ran into a truly revolting person in a comment section yesterday -- (okay, I sought them out after somebody came to me upset about what they had been saying) -- and they claimed that genderfluid individuals were "fakes" and then got angry when people opposed them.

Seriously, I haven't been this upset in a while.

I just needed to put this out there, just because people claim they have a right to speak, doesn't mean they actually do.
