CHAPTER 26

“You ready to go?” Andrew asked.

“Already?” I pretended to be upset.

“If you're ready,” he laughed.

“Actually, I had to talk to Ethan about my final,” I grimaced. “I somehow failed it.” I faked not knowing how it was possible, but I knew all too well that that was the day Andrew kissed me, then broke us up.

“Oh, okay. I'll be right here,” he smiled his winning smile at me. I gave him my best smile as I thanked him.

I scampered off to find Ethan. “Bowman!” I said as I entered his room. I was so thankful that he wasn't in the middle of a class. I mentally scolded myself for not thinking of that earlier.

“Fitzgerald!” he copied me.

I narrowed my eyes at him.

“I assume you're here to talk about your final?” he smiled evilly.

I gulped, “Um, yes.”

“There isn't usually a way to retake it. But I will make an exception for you, Ella.”

“Why would you do that?” I asked, thinking this was a trick.

“Because you could be my sister-in-law,” he said simply.

“No!” I shouted, “No, oh no! Why would Sara do that to me?”

“Did you want to retake it or not?” he asked.

“Yes,” I whispered, defeated.

“Good. Be here after Andrew's class Friday.”

“Okay,” I said while leaving.

I walked back to where Andrew was waiting for me. “How'd it go?” he asked.

“Awful,” I sighed, “The prick is dating my sister! That's why he's allowing me to retake it.”

“He's dating Sara?” Andrew asked. I was still too defeated and couldn't even nod. Andrew knew what I meant anyway. That's why we were perfect for each other, well, one of the many reasons. “How dare he?” he sounded as upset by this piece of news as I was. He was so sweet.

“I know!” I was frustrated so I kicked the door frame. I hurt it and cried in pain. I was surprised I didn't break it. Andrew chuckled a little, obviously not noticing I could hear him. I ignored it, and tried to ignore the throbbing pain in my foot. We walked to his car. My favorite Christian song was playing when we got in: “Fight Another Day” by Addison Road.

“Your broken dreams,

Your crazy schemes,

They always let you down.

The things we chase,

A hopeless race,

You're breathless, off the ground.

From soaring highs to crash-and-dies,

A peace yet to be found.

But you could spend a lifetime running.

You could spend a lifetime running.

And do you feel the fire when the flame gets hot?

Are you living every day like it's the last you got?

Will you step aside when it all falls down,

And watch it burn away?

Have a little faith when the walls cave in,

Pray for strength to fly against the wind.

Will you walk away when the fire gets hot,

Or fight another...

Another day, yeah.

Your fractured heart,

Your disregard,

It leaves you frozen still.

A slow withdrawal

From it all

That keeps you unfulfilled.

Will you spend a lifetime running?

'Cause you could spend a lifetime running!

Even when your heart's been broken,

He'll be there with arms wide open.

Be strong and his love will lead you to fight another day.

Keep your head to the sun cause it's shining

On you,” I whispered the lyrics.

The next song was called “Stolen” by Brandon Heath.

“I'm a fugitive,

Running from the life that I was meant to live,

Looking for somewhere that I can lay my head.

I'm lucky if I make it through the night.

But I can't sleep,

Knowing that You're one more step ahead of me.

I'm a fool for ever thinking You'd just let me go.

That's not the way it's ever gone before,

I'm Yours.

You catch me like a thief in the night,

You hold me when I put up a fight,

You chase me when I run from Your light,

Because You love, You won't give up,

'Til my heart is stolen,

'Til my heart is stolen away.

I'm trying to understand that life comes after dying,

To embrace that I'm a slave until I'm captured,

But You would never use a lock or a key,

'Cause I am free.

I could change my name, cover all my tracks,

But I'm wrong to think I could lose the past,

'Cause You found me here and You took me back.

Once a criminal, now a prodigal.”

After the song was over, I watched everything go by outside the window and kind of zoned out. I had never done that before, but I guess that happens when you feel entirely comfortable, which I did when I was with Andrew.

We picked up Oliver and drove to his house.
