Before I went out on Wednesday morning I loaded my laptop and printed out a couple of résumés so I could give them to a couple of shops. I picked up my wallet and my phone, just in case I needed it later, and went downstairs. Ben had left a spare key on the dining room table for me, because he and Joe had already left for work and I would need to lock up. I poured a bowl of cereal out and ate it quickly and then after checking I had everything in my bag I left the house, locking the door behind me.

I was pretty sure I could remember the way to the train station by myself now; I’d been there pretty much every day since I had arrived in London. It took just over a half hour to walk to the station, but once I had paid for my ticket I only had to wait ten minutes for my train. I sat the usual forty five minute trip to Waterloo Station, listening to my iPod and reading Catcher in the Rye, I’d got so caught up in the book, I thought I’d missed the stop, before realizing the one I wanted was actually the last stop. When I saw everyone else in the carriage starting to get ready to get off the train I took it as a sign that I probably should too. I shoved the book back in my bag and zipped it back up, deciding to leave my iPod on as I still had another half hour journey on the tube to get into the heart of London.

By 2:30 I had got fed up. I’d been looking around for a job pretty much since I got off the train and so far I hadn’t really had much luck. A couple of shops and small cafés had taken my résumé and said that if anything came up they would give me a call. Meaning I had to turn my phone on, but I needed a job, so that was only a small sacrifice.

I decided to stop off at one of the several Starbucks along the street to get a drink and have a break from traipsing around the city. I ordered my usual Mocha Valencia and as I was waiting for it to be made I stood thinking for a minute before having a sudden thought. As the guy handed me my drink I got his attention.

“I don’t suppose you’ve got any job vacancies do you?” I asked.

“I don’t know. Hang on, let me ask the manager.” The guy told me. He went through a door and I waited a few minutes, before he came back, with another guy.

“Hi. How can I help?” He asked in a strong Scottish accent.

“I was just wondering if you have any job vacancies…?” I asked again.

“Well not right now. But we might do in the next few weeks. The most I can do is take a contact number, and have you got a CV?”

I guess a CV is the same thing as a résumé, so I nodded and opened my bag.

“My number is on there.” I told him, handing him the résumé.

“Ok. Well if anything comes up I’ll be sure you give you a call.” He smiled.

“Awesome. Thanks… Thanks a lot.”

I sat down with my drink and drank it quickly, just staring out the window. Once I had finished I carried on down the street before deciding to just head back to the house, and trying somewhere else tomorrow. I sat on the train, once again and tried to get caught up in my book again, it wasn’t quite as easy to read this time round though.

As I was walking away from the station when I got back to the right stop, I noticed a street to the left which led to some shops. I wandered down it and looked in each store as I walked past. I saw a HMV and then thought about what Lee had said about it not being a bad place to work in. I went into the store and went through the same process I had in Starbucks back in Oxford Street… and pretty much every store and café I had been in today. As I waited, yet again, for the worker to get the manager I glanced down the CD rack that was next to me. It was the Rock/Pop section. As I looked through the CD’s there I only half paid attention to the artists, and tried to ignore the small selection of Green Day albums that were almost directly in front of me.

“Hi can I help?” I heard a familiar voice ask. “Oh hey Frankie. What can I do for you?”

I turned and saw Lee now standing behind the counter.

“Oh Lee. Hi. I was wondering if there are any job vacancies going around here?”

“As a matter of fact. I think we got a couple yesterday or the day before. We lost a couple of members of staff.”

“Seriously? Cause everywhere else I’ve asked has nothing!”

“Yeah sure. I’ll need a CV and stuff, but I can safely say you’ve got pretty good chances.” He grinned at me. I smiled as I got a résumé out of my bag and handed it to him.

He glanced through it and then looked back up at me.

“Start Monday?”

“…Really?” He nodded. “Awesome. Thanks a lot.”

“No worries. If you can be here for eight-forty-five on Monday morning, I’ll give you a brief run through of everything and then you can start right away.”

“I shall be here at eight forty five on Monday then. Great.”

“Happy days.” He put my résumé in his pocket. “Oh by the way, I don’t know if Stoo or Justin mentioned anything. But do you want to go to see We Are The Ocean on Saturday?”

“Um. Sure… Who?” Lee chuckled

“They’re a band from London. And we’ve got some tickets to see them at the Relentless Garage, you know where you went to watch The Famous Class the other day? Yeah. They’re playing there, but downstairs. It’s bigger than where the guys played on Sunday.”

“Oh right. Yeah that would be cool.” I nodded.

“Awesome. Well I’ve got to get back to work. I’m sure we’ll see each other before hand, but if not, Stoo is picking me and Justin up and six thirty on Saturday, so we’ll either swing by after that, or he’ll come and pick you up before us. I’ll get him to ring you with what time to be ready for and stuff.”

“Ok cool. I’ll see you later then I guess.”

We said our goodbyes and I left, to let Lee get back to work.
