chapter fourteen.

She blinks at me for a few moments. I don't know what she wants me to say.

"But you can't just...not be together," she says slowly.

"Actually, we can. We met like a day ago."

"Yes, but you're his mate. He can't just live without you. He'll go insane."

Perhaps I have not fully grasped the entire 'mates' concept, because Lark sounds so melodramatic to me right now that I straighten back up. "You should probably get some more rest, right?" I suggest gently.

As if on cue, Heath comes out from the hallway, wearing only a pair of sweatpants. "Baby, I thought you were just coming to grab some water," he says, walking straight up to Lark and wrapping his arms around shoulders.

I reach for a glass and fill it up with water for her from the brass tap as they whisper to each other.

"You're leaving?" Heath asks me when I slide the water over to Lark.

I nod wordlessly.

He scoffs and stands up to his full height. "Seriously? After all of that, you just leave? Lark got tortured because Reed needed you so badly and you just walk away?"

"Easy," Lark coos, rubbing his chest and putting the glass down. "She's the only reason I got out of there, remember?"

Heath grumbles something but relents. He slides his arms back around Lark and picks her up, holding her tightly.

"Feel free to watch some TV or whatever," Lark tells me over his shoulder as he carries her away.

"Is there a phone I could use?" I call out.

"In the study nook!" She points at a desk nestled across from the kitchen. A cordless landline sits on top of it.

They disappear down the hallway.

I go across to the phone and dial Harper's number—luckily I know it by heart.

It rings and rings. I almost think she isn't going to answer since she's so terrible with her phone, always losing it.

But then, "Who's this?" The relief I feel at hearing her voice is breathtaking.

"Is that really how you answer the phone, Harp?"

"Oh my god, April! I thought you got murdered. What the hell?" She sounds worried.

"I know, I'm sorry."

"What happened? I called you a hundred times after the ball on Friday night and then I went to your dorm yesterday and you weren't there. I've been going crazy thinking Nik Gray abducted you! Are you ok?"

"I'm alright," I say. "I lost my phone and then...it's hard to explain. But I'll be home tomorrow."

"Wait...were you fucking him this entire time? Oh my god, I've been out of my mind with worry and you've been having a sex marathon."

"What? No!" I almost laugh at the absurdity of that scenario. "I'm not even with Nik anymore. Things didn't go well between us."

"Did he hurt you?" She sounds ready to launch a revenge plan and I love her for it.

"I'm fine, I promise. I just wanted to let you know I'm alright."

She groans. "I really wish you'd have called two hours ago."

"Why? God, you didn't call the police did you?"

I can picture her grimace even though she's miles and miles away. "Worse, I'm afraid. I called your parents."
