⸺ ⧗ ⸺

Every year, the same scenario played out. And every year, without surprise, you found yourself disappointed.

You got eager as your birthday approached, taking it day by day as the excitement grew, and when the day came... you were disappointed and even ended up in tears.

Honestly, you didn't really know why you kept getting your hopes up... that maybe this year things will finally be different! Let's face it, it won't.

You'd never been a fan of birthdays, yours especially. You liked to say you didn't know where that hatred for that particular day came from, but deep down you think you do.

You didn't really care about getting older. And while yes, you were afraid of death and the nothingness that came with it, ageing wasn't a process you could stop.

But just for once, you'd like your birthday to feel special.

And while it was true that birthdays were only special for those born that day, and to everyone else it was just another regular day. It only made sense that if you wanted to do something, you should be the one to plan it. And while that made perfect sense... you'd love to have something planned for you for once.

Birthdays as a kid used to be exciting because of the presents you didn't know you were getting, and your favourite homemade cake, many postcards in the mailbox waiting to be opened and just a full day to spend with your friends.

But somewhere between then and now, as you got older... The homemade cake turned into a random pâtisserie you found at the bakery on your way home. Most of the time, it was not even something you liked because you got there right before closing, and they ran out of everything else.

You didn't receive any presents any more, only a few bucks at most if you got lucky.

Postcards and phone calls turned into quick texts in between two meetings to get it out of the way.

And the party turned into a crying session under your desk or in the shower every year.

No songs or birthday candles to blow, and no matter how embarrassed you felt, you started to miss those.

Honestly, you didn't know why you kept thinking it was gonna be different. It wasn't like your situation changed. Being stuck in the middle and not being the golden child. You knew your birthday meant nothing to your parents but damn, a little effort would be nice. You weren't asking for the latest iPhone or a trip around the world, but getting flowers would be nice... you just wanted to know that they thought of you, even if it was a teeny tiny little bit.

But at least, you had Natasha.

The circumstances during which you met were surprising... You met Natasha a couple of years ago. You bumped into each other while you were walking your dog.

Natasha was apparently looking after her sister's dog whilst the latter was away, and the two dogs decided they were best friends. You and Natasha started talking while detangling the two leashes and then every day for the rest of the week, you continued to walk your dogs together.
