"Can you read what it says?" jack asked impatiently.

"Yeah, I would be able to if you would manage to keep quiet for ten minutes," she poked her tongue out at him, to which he scolded at her.

She squinted her eyes as she tried desperately to read this Intricate writing. But the rain was far too heavy to look between, thankfully a bolt of lightning shot over the gates and lit up the sign just enough for her to read it.

".... Portae... perished."

For a moment there was silence, before jack opened his mouth again. "what the hell does that mean?"

Madison sighed heavily. "Honestly, didn't you ever study Latin?" she turned to him. jack opened his mouth to answer but." on second thought don't answer that."

"So, genius what does it mean exactly?"

Madison thought for a moment. "Roughly translated, it means 'the gates of the perished.'"

Jack wore this blank expression on his face. Maddison hit her head with her hand and groaned loudly. "OH, mads I love how I make you groan," Jack chuckled.

Madison hit his arm, which he then rubbed better, groaning in return. Madison thought long and hard for a moment as she stared at the gate and wondered about all its mysteries, about everything that it held inside. In the far distance Madison could see two figures that were too dark to make out, but from what she could see, it looked as if one of them was floating up in the air.

Looking just beyond the paint chipped gates, she could see the graves that were dotted across all grass, the moss that was growing and engulfing all the grey stone and turning them a dark shade of green and brown, the writing no longer visible to identify the people that occupied the ground below. The trees and plants that were placed for decoration and ascetic seemed to fade into the darkness of the night sky.

"There seemed to be some sort of lock on this though. and we don't have a key to unlock it." Maddison pondered as she yanked on the gates.

"Hmmmm....maybe we don't need a key," Jack said as he reached into his backpack. From inside, he pulled out a book.

"You own a book?"

"Yeah why wouldn't I?" Jack said, a little offended by Madison's words.

"No reason just didn't think you would have brought a book with you to this. I thought you might have brought something...useful."

"Wouldn't you love to know what goodies I have in this bag?" He smirked.

Madison just rolled her eyes and muttered. "Moron."

"I heard that."

"I said it loud enough for you to hear, funny enough ." Madison said with her arms crossed. Jack wasn't paying attention to her as he kneeled down in front of her and scrolled through the pages as quickly as he could trying not to get the pages wet. Madison peered over Jacks' shoulder at the pages, drawing of monsters, demons, spells, enchantments. Anything and everything a fairy tale believer would say was true, she could see multi coloured tags at the top of each page.

"What exactly is th-"

"Ah ha! here it is!" Jack exclaimed before she could finish her sentence, jack was standing in front of her shoving the book under her nose. his finger roamed the pages until he stopped on a highlighted sentence near the bottom of the page.
