She awoke feeling suffocated, darkness clinging to her as she remained laid down with her eyes closed. The darkness wrapped its arms around her neck, and she clawed at her throat for air. The darkness tugged her hair and parted her lips and forced it's way down her throat until she couldn't even gulp her own saliva.

She coughed.
"Hey, Miss Plum, you okay?"

A familiar voice and a familiar nickname shone out to her in the darkness like a lighthouse. Her eyes pried open. But when she saw his face, uncontrollable tears fell.
"Mei..."
"I'm so scared. I don't want to be here. Leave me alone, go away. Go away! I don't want to say these things aloud but I can't stop. Help me please."

He dragged in a long breath. He knew this would happen. The procedure was barely used before, what else could they have expected?
"Shhhh. Mei, go back to sleep. You'll feel better when you wake up."

He stroked her head with a warm hand and smiled caringly, his amiable tan features - threaded with strings of golden sunshine - faded and blurred as she drifted back to the darkness that once was.

"Renjun, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have argued with you like that. It was stupid of me."
"Hey, it's okay, arguments happen. I'm just happy you're feeling better now."

He watched her face for a change of expression, or any kind of flinch of some sort that would allude to the process not having fully worked. But Renjun found none.
"Mei, tell me honestly, do you really think I'm a liar? You said in the argument that I lie to you like everyone else does, do you really think that? That I'm no better than anyone else?"

She seemed shocked to even think that she would say that. What even happened to her yesterday? She could barely remember, all she remembered was arguing with Renjun and falling asleep from crying so much. "I'm sorry, I barely remember saying it. I shouldn't have said that to you. You might postpone the truth, but you would never lie."

The boy pulled her into a hug. It had worked! But he couldn't be sure where it would go from here.
