Thomas was visiting Brazil. He was talking with Gabriela about a very important and exciting event that was going to happen in a couple of days.

"The Rio de Janiero Carnival is going to begin very soon," said Gabriela excitedly.

"Is that near here?" asked Thomas.

"Not far," said Gabriela, "I daresay that you and I will be taking many visitors from all around the world to see it!"

"Is it a big carnival then?"

"It is only one of the greatest events in the entire world!" boasted Gabriela.

Thomas was very intrigued and wanted to go and see the carnival for himself.

The next day, Thomas was indeed sent along with Gabriela to take some passengers to Rio.

"I can hardly wait, Thomas," said Gabriela, "it's always so much fun!"

Thomas was excited too. The last time he had encountered the carnival, he wasn't really enjoying it as he was feeling annoyed with his friend, Nia at the time.

"I remember people dressed up as birds," he said to Gabriela, "and they were all dancing along the roads and rails. And there were these giant floats too!"

"Ah, yes! There is always so much to enjoy at the Rio Carnivale, Thomas!"

There were many preparations being made in Rio. Workmen were everywhere decorating the streets, setting up stalls and making finishing touches to floats.

(Gustavo and Raul can be seen bringing trucks and passengers alike.)

Thomas and Gabriela soon arrived, and a workman was there to greet them and their passengers.

"There has been a late ship back at Guanabara Bay," he said, "some more holidaymakers have come to the carnival on it. I need you two to go back and collect them in time for the carnival!"

"Yes, sir," said the two engines at once.

Gabriela headed off first with her coaches. Thomas followed after with his own. But Thomas was busy daydreaming about the fun of the carnival. He imagined dancing along to the music as the floats went by. He even imagined being on a float as a special attraction.

Thomas was so busy puffing along and daydreaming that he didn't watch where he was going.

As Gabriela went past the fork that led to Guanabara Bay, a falling fruit from a tree up ahead fell and hit the points switch and it sent Thomas onto a different track.

Then there was trouble.

Thomas was sent onto an overgrown track. The rails were rusty and overcome by the growth of grass. Thomas' wheels did not like the grass and lots of it got jammed into his side rods. Thomas tried to slow down but he hit a branch and came off the rails.

"Oh no!" he cried. "HELP! HELP!"

But nobody heard Thomas.

Gabriela was back at the Bay, waiting for Thomas to take the rest of the new passengers. But there was no sign of him.

"Can you see him from up there, Cassia?" she asked.

Cassia looked out for Thomas.

"I can't see anyone from up here," she called, "I think you'll just have to go on and find Thomas and warn him how late he is!"

"Boa ideia!" exclaimed Gabriela. *

Gabriela set off to find Thomas.

But Thomas was nowhere along the line back to Rio. Gabriela was beginning to worry.

When she arrived, she asked the workmen if Thomas had come back.

But nobody had seen Thomas.

Gabriela realized that she had to find Thomas herself on the way back to the Bay.

So she headed back the way she had gone the first time and then she noticed the points were facing the other way.

"Nobody has been on that line for years! I hope Thomas is okay!"

Gabriela carefully and cautiously followed the track and called out for her friend.

"Thomas! Thomas!!"

Then she heard a voice up ahead.

"I'm here, Gabriela!"

"THOMAS!"

Gabriela found Thomas off the rails on the same line.

"Don't worry, Thomas! I shall have you back on the rails in no time!"

And so, Gabriela pulled the coaches out of the way and then chained up to Thomas.

"Hold tight, Thomas!"

Gabriela heaved and huffed and eventually succeeded in pulling Thomas' wheels back onto the line.

"Phew! Thank you, Gabriela!" cheered Thomas.

"You're welcome, Thomas," said Gabriela, "now let's get back. You have passengers to collect!"

Thomas and Gabriela cheerfully delivered the rest of the passengers to Rio for the carnival the following evening.

"I still can hardly wait," cooed Gabriela.

"Haha! Nor me!" grinned Thomas.

The following day, Thomas and Gabriela went to see the carnival with some more passengers. There were people parading everywhere, music blasted as loudly as a jet plane and floats flooded the streets. Everybody was happy, excited and enjoying the partying of the carnival.

"Isn't it so wonderful, Thomas?" shouted Gabriela.

"Yes," replied Thomas, "but...IT IS SOOOOO NOISY!"

Gabriela just laughed.

Then, they had an announcement.

"In honour of his being the first railway engine to travel the world, we present this special float to celebrate his visit to our country! Welcome to Rio, Brazil, Thomas the Tank Engine!"

Then out came to Thomas and Gabriela's view, a beautiful float which was coloured and shaped in wonderful lights, just like Thomas!

"Oh, wow!" gasped Thomas.

"SURPRISE!" giggled Gabriela loudly.

"You knew?"

"Of course! I was so afraid when you went missing yesterday! I thought we wouldn't find you in time for the carnivale and you would miss your honorary surprise!"

"Well," chuckled Thomas, "I am surprised! Thank you, Gabriela! Thank you, Brazil! CARNIVALE!"

And the Rio de Janeiro Carnival continued!

(The End!)
