frankincense lingering in the air of the dim-lit venue
walls covered with intricate patterns and depictions
paintings of unfathomable detail and vibrant colors,
looking down on us from the deeply curved dome ceiling
almost as if judging us,
making us feel minuscule in front of such greatnessveined marble pillars holding up the *byzantine structure
as a wave of serenity overcomes the observers
sinking their thin beeswax candles into the sand of the candelabrum
whispering secret prayers under their breath as fire touches the wick
and the chanting of hymns in a dialect no longer spoken,
completes the scene.*byzantine: (of a system or situation) excessively complicated, and typically involving a great deal of administrative detail.
With this poem, I wanted to show my appreciation for the beauty of eastern orthodox churches as well as the mysticism that is infused in the congregation itself.
