Our story isn't about a main character, but a side character in a bigger story. She has her own but it's closely knit with that of so many people that she might as well be the main character.

The story starts when she was just being born. She didn't know what was going on, she heard screaming. She knew she had to get out. She wanted out. She heard more screaming from a voice she recognised. It was a voice that she heard for so many months, so kind and gentle, told her so many things, so many stories and sang so many songs. The usual kind voice was screaming in pain. She hated that the voice was in pain.

Mommy was screaming.

She kept trying to get out. She needed to get out. To help Mommy, protect her. That was what was going through her head. Help Mommy, protect her. Love her.

She kicked out and saw a light. The screaming became louder. Mommy was that way. She closed her eyes and felt something push her out. She felt something hold her head, her body. She screamed and kicked, trying to get to Mommy.

"It's a girl," an unfamiliar voice said. The screaming had stopped but she still wanted to know what was going on. Was Mommy okay? How could she protect her Mommy?

She felt something being cut and then something being dragged across her sensitive skin. She was being wrapped in something. It was tight around her, it wasn't letting her kick out.

She was suddenly being held by someone else. This person was so warm, their skin was slightly wet but she didn't mind when they held her. "Hi beautiful," the familiar voice told her. "I'm your mommy. I'm gonna love you every day of my life."

She was okay. Mommy was okay. She could rest now. Mommy was okay.

She woke up on something. She was wrapped in something. The same thing as before, the same, soft, warm cloth wrapped around her body. She heard voices. She recognised one of them. It was as familiar and comforting as Mommy's. She heard this one a lot too.

Daddy. This was Daddy.

"Can I?" he asked. She felt hands go underneath her and something pick her up. She kicked out, tried to feel what was going on. "Hey, it's okay," Daddy reassured her. "It's okay. It's okay. Shhhhh. It's Daddy."

He looked down at this little thing in his arms. She was beautiful. She looked adorable in that little pink hat, and the pink blanket wrapped around her body. She had that tan to her like all babies did but he could tell she would have slightly brown skin. Not like either of her parents, but like her mother's mom (the woman was Native descent. Claudia had gotten her father's skin). She hadn't opened her eyes yet but he had a feeling she would have her mother's and her brother's whiskey brown eyes.

She kicked against the foreign thing that was holding her. He cradled her gently. "Shhhh. Shhhh, it's okay. I'm here, Daddy's here. I'll protect you." Her arm got loose from the blanket and it swung out wildly. He held it gently to keep her from hurting herself. Her tiny little hand moved and he watched as her small fingers traced over the veins in his hands before they grabbed hold of his pointer finger.

She held on tightly. So tightly. It was like she was staking her claim on him. It was like she was saying, "No, you don't get to move. You're mine. You're my Dad. Forever."

He looked at her tiny fist that held his finger so tightly. His heart exploded with love for her. This was his daughter. He made her. Sure they didn't expect her but he still loved her. He wouldn't change a thing about this little wonder.

Her eyelids started to flutter. He bent over her so her eyes wouldn't get hurt by the bright hospital lights. She opened them sleepily. They were a brown-orange. They were the colour of mahogany, they were the colour of wet wood when you stripped the bark away from the tree. They were bright. So bright they were almost glowing.
