Warnings: cursing, violence, black blood, red blood, injuries, death of side characters, almost getting hit by a car, getting hit by a car

Vic stepped out in front of the driveway and put her hands on Roscoe's trunk. Scott pressed the brakes before she needed to apply her strength. Lori stood beside her. Scott climbed out of the cab and walked over to the girls.

"I found this," Lori said. She had showed Vic the same thing. It was a piece of a broken lacrosse stick with blood on it. "It's Brett's and he's missing and I heard gunshots."

"How do you know this is his blood?" Scott asked.

"Because he's my brother," the girl answered "It's mine too."

Scott took the piece of the stick and examined it.

"I looked in the earth, all I got were flashes of Brett, not his attacker," Vic told him. "But he's hurt. Badly."

Vic never liked races. She was good at running, she just wasn't good with the pressure. But these kinds were her least favourite. A race against time. It sent her nerves into overdrive, put her on edge. She was aware of everything, The grass on her shoes, the smell of Malia's deodorant (It was Secret). But it had also allowed her to listen to the trees, and find the arrow that was covered in Brett's blood.

Liam examined the direction, followed it to the ground, and pointed at a spot. "Here," he said.

Lori picked up his phone, which was where the beta had pointed.

"I think he set a trap," Liam told Scott.

"He's fighting back," Scott said.

"And now we know he's alive," Malia added.

Lori went to the tree and ripped it from the wood.

Ow, ow, ow, ow, the oak muttered. Could've done that gentler.

Was it better if it had been kept in? Vic asked.

The tree had gone silent in resignation.

"But he's still hurt," Lori pointed out. "We need to find him, he needs to know we're here." She turned around and took a breath to howl. Only for Vic and Malia to both put a hand over her mouth.

"You want the hunter to know we're here too?" Malia asked.

"I get that you wanna find Brett," Vic said, removing her hand. "But we can't do that if we're all dead."

"He's new," Liam protested. "We can take him."

"Some people would argue new hunter is even more dangerous then an experienced one," Vic countered.

"And what if Brett howls back?" Malia added. "He'll lead the hunter right to him."

"No, we could find him first," Scott said. "There's no human that can track human faster then we can. And we've got the advantage, we've done this before. We know what we're doing guys."

"Risk and reward, Scotty," Vic said. "Risk is Brett's life and ours. I'm not taking that risk."

Liam took the arrow from Lori, inspected it. Vic looked at it, watched the dried blood cake on the end of the shaft.

"How come I can't catch his scent?" Malia asked.

"He's masking it," Lori answered.

"Can someone tell him not to?"
