In the Land of the Rising Sun, there are two families who rule over Japan. Two royal families reside in Japan, One is the Royalty that is shown to the outside, the Shogun which rules over the northern and western part of Japan. The other, is the royal family hidden from the prying eyes, those of the Royal Bloodline which rule over the southern and easter part of Japan.
But those of the Royal Bloodline are hidden away from the public, no one knows about them and so they were then ruled off by the people as a legend, an old folktale that never existed. To make matters simple and not complicated, they agreed to let the Shogun be the symbol of the country.
Those of the royal bloodline are the ones who rule over Japan in the shadows, hiding under the guise of the Shogun. And the current royal bloodline of Japan consists of 3 siblings, the firstborn being a female and the second and third are both male.
The current next in line to the throne, was Princess (Y/N), of the royal bloodline. But (Y/N) was a rebellious princess, she was always curious about what it would be like to be a normal citizen- so she alway snuck out of the palace.
"Oi, what are you doing here again!?" Gintoki whined when he saw the (H/C) haired woman lying on his couch with his JUMP in her hand.
"Hey, I'm paying you good money to let me hang out here and you say such mean words to me? My heart....feels hurt!~" She sighed dramatically, placing a frail hand to her head.
"Hmph, if only you weren't paying money." Gintoki narrowed his eyes at her as he walked towards his desk. Gintoki slowly placed his elbow on the table and leaned his chin unto his open palm, boring his red eyes on to (Y/N).
"....I can feel you staring at me, Gin." (Y/N) stated, flipping through another page of the JUMP. "Are you secretly a rich girl?" Gintoki suddenly asked her.
It had been months since (Y/N) had started hanging out at the Yorozuya House. It started when one day when the princess found a flyer of Gintoki's business lying at her feet.
"....They'll do anything as long as you pay?"
Those words were what struck her the most, and thus- The Yorozuya became her safe house. While her bodyguards would be running around all over the place, panicking when she disappeared. She'd be calmly reading JUMP or drinking Gintoki's strawberry milk in the Yorozuya House, even going as far as dressing herself in Gintoki's clothes.
"Hm, something like that?..." (Y/N) uninterestedly says, ignoring him and focusing her attention to the JUMP. "It's so noisy outside. What's the ruckus out there, Patsuan?" Gintoki asked Shinpachi who had just came back from shopping.
"Something about someone missing. Oh, I forgot the detergent, I have to go back." Shinpachi shrugged and exited the house again.
(Y/N)'s eyes widened. She just knew that it was her they were looking for. Quietly placing the JUMP down, (Y/N) silently made her way to Gintoki.
She stood in front of his desk, as the silver haired male looked up at her in question. "Gintoki...." (Y/N) gulped thinly, and Gintoki could see the empty look in her (E/C) orbs.
"You'll do anything if I pay you right?" She asked all of a sudden and Gintoki felt suspicious. "That's right, why?" He inquired when suddenly (Y/N) leaned down closer to his face.
"Then go out with me tomorrow." She ordered him, Gintoki's lips parted as his mouth dropped open in shock. A huge blush covered his cheeks as he tried to look away from her seemingly nonchalant gaze.
"W-What the hell do you think you're making me do?! Are you crazy?!" Gintoki yelled at her, "Asking me to go on a date with you all of a sudden...." He whispered lowly, sometimes Gintoki was an open book.
But to (Y/N) the ultimate dense princess, she couldn't see that Gintoki had special feelings for her. "Why not? I'll pay you." She stated plainly as she tilted her head to the side.
"Just one date, Gintoki. Please...." She slightly tipped her head down, her hair framing her face around so Gintoki couldn't see the kind of face she was making. But, just from the sound of her voice, he could tell she was sad.
".....Fine." Gintoki huffed lightly while she lowly smiled.
---
The next day, as Gintoki agreed they went on a date. He took her to all kinds of places, and as much as he would not want to admit it- he was having fun. With her, Gintoki felt like he was the happiest man alive.
"Oh, Takoyaki!!! Gin, come on!!" (Y/N) excitedly spotted a Takoyaki stand and had unknowingly grabbed Gintoki's hand to pull him along with her.
Gintoki could only look at the look of pure excitement on her face while she dragged him. The feeling of her skin against his skin, her warmth flowing through his own. Her small hand which fit so perfectly in his large hand.
Those (E/C) orbs filled with nothing but purity, excitement and....love. That sweet smile fixed on her beautiful soft red lips. She was beautiful in every single way and Gintoki would admit over a thousand times that there would be no way he wouldn't fall for her.
He would choose to fall in love with her each and every day.
"Oww, that's hot!! Ah, but it's really good!" (Y/N) hisses as she lightly fanned her mouth which contained the steaming hot takoyaki which was freshly cooked. "Here, try it!!" She lifted one piece of the takoyaki and held it out to him.
"Say ahh!!" (Y/N) smiled softly at him, her eyes holding nothing but love and affection. Blushing lightly, Gintoki opened his mouth to receive the food.
"See? Isn't it delicious?" She beamed again, and Gintoki nodded. "Y-Yeah.." He looked down, now feeling his heart beat loudly against his chest.
He was so in love with her.
"Oh, look!!" She pulled him again, this time to watch over the setting sun. "Nothing beats the sun setting over the ocean. This is the most beautiful view there is." She spoke slowly, as she sighed deeply. "No, this is the most beautiful view." Gintoki interjects, his red eyes only looking at her.
"There is something else-...Something much more beautiful than this." Gintoki couldn't fight off the smile that was tugging on his lips. "Really? What is it?" She asked turning to him.
Gintoki quickly looked away before she could catch him staring at her. "Y-You can't see it... Only I can," He crossed his arms over his chest and turned to look at her.
But she was already staring at him. Her eyes locked into his red ones and they were both drawing closer and closer to each other. (Y/N)'s eyes fluttered close as Gintoki raised her chin with his hand.
Their lips softly crashed against each others.
When they broke away from the kiss, their eyes met and they both blushed and looked away. "B-By the way for this date. I don't need your money." Gintoki spoke quickly as (Y/N)'s eyebrows furrowed, 'Didn't he do that to get money?' She questioned herself.
"I did it because I like you, alright? Man, you're a pretty dense woman. I love you, got that?" Gintoki awkwardly scratched the back of his neck and looked away.
At his words, (Y/N)'s heart dropped. 'No, no, no, no. T-This can't be, I-I'm not- this isn't- this wasn't supposed to happen!' (Y/N) felt tears spring up to her eyes at his sudden confession and she turned away from Gintoki and ran away before he could stop her.
"O-Oi....(Y/N)? What's wrong? Oi!!" Gintoki ran after her but she disappeared. "Damn it....Should I not have kissed her?...." Gintoki cursed at himself as he clicked his tongue and looked down.
'I made up my mind that I'd marry my betrothed. I will seal my feelings with just one date with Gintoki. I should be satisfied with that one date....But why- why did he have to say he loved me too?...' (Y/N) clutched her chest as she let her tears roll freely down her cheeks.
'He's making it harder and harder for me to leave him.....'
---
Gintoki frowned as he slumped his head on his desk. It's been a week since the incident with (Y/N), and she hasn't come back ever since.
"...was it my fault? Did she not like it? She doesn't like me too, does she?....Damn it, why am I so stupid? Why did I have to confess all of a sudden...." Gintoki grumbled as he slammed a fist down to the table. He then hears the front door open, he quickly lifted his head expecting it to finally be (Y/N) but it wasn't her.
It was Kagura, Shinpachi and Princess Soyo. At this point, Gintoki didn't care anymore. He just wanted to see her again, it was like the times they spent together was just a fleeting dream.
She just disappeared like that. All of a sudden, like she never existed. Gintoki even started questioning himself whether she was just a figment of his imagination or was she a real person, someone who was able to make him fall for her.
"Gin-chan, (Y/N)-nee's in danger!!" Kagura slammed her palm unto the table making Gintoki look up at her in alarm.
"...What?!"
One look at the troubled look on Princess Soyo's face was all he needed to know that they weren't lying.
----
(Y/N) was alone in her room, she locked herself there. She had been thinking about Gintoki ever since the kiss they shared on that date. Then, she heard someone knock on her door.
"Sorry, I need more time to think." She softly says, as she leaned her head down with a deep sigh. But, she could hear the door sliding open and a pair of foot planted firmly on the ground.
"I said I need more time to think-" (Y/N) lifted her head to reprimand whoever it was that entered against her orders, but cut herself off halfway.
"...Gintoki?" Her eyebrows furrowed confusedly, her eyes were stinging as she felt the tears pooling in her (E/C) orbs.
"....You didn't tell me anything." Gintoki's head was turned away from her, but just from his voice- that was full of hurt and pain, she could tell that he knew something.
"I-I'm sorry," (Y/N) whimpered softly, she couldn't put up a front with him anymore. She wanted to be completely honest to him now. "I-I...I'm so sorry."
"....It's fine. I understand why you didn't tell me." Gintoki clenched his fists, "But you should've at least said goodbye so I didn't worry about you."
"I...I didn't want to," She looked down. "Or rather, I was afraid." (Y/N) admitted as she looked up to meet Gintoki's red orbs. "That if I....said goodbye- I wouldn't be able to go on with it. My resolve would wither," She smiled softly, her tears slipping away.
"Because saying goodbye to you— is the thing that I would never want to do." She wiped her tears and sniffed. "Because....I love you too."
At her confession, Gintoki's eyes widened. His breath hitched in his throat, he couldn't hear anything else but her words especially those three words he so wanted to hear from her.
Time seemed to stop, while Gintoki froze in his place. "Gintoki, if I said I love you too, would you lay down your everything and come with me, leave behind your life in the Kabuki District, all your friends, all the memories....would you do so just for me?" She asked him seriously and sincerely.
His silence was defeaning. His lips parted, but could utter no words out. There was only one thing he could say. "...I'm sorry." His voice cracked at the last part.
"I thought so," She sighed and shut her eyes close. She then clasped her hands together and looked down.
"Either you or I have to sacrifice something for love. But we both know that neither of us have the courage to do so, we're just two cowards in love." She smiled ironically.
".....I didn't say I would stop you," Gintoki sighed, finally finding the words to say to her. "I didn't come here to wreck your wedding or something," Gintoki gulped thinly as he sighed and walked towards her.
"I just....wanted to say those words to you, while I can." He says, smiling genuinely at her as he caressed a piece of her (H/C) hair in his hand.
"I can't decide what you can and can't do. I just wanted to say that I love you. I may be a coward but I'm a coward who's in love with you." He chuckled lowly and sighed, finally tucking behind her ear that loose piece of her hair that he'd been twirling around his finger.
"Be happy, (Y/N)."
"Gintoki, I—"
"(Y/N)." An old man entered the room, making (Y/N) gasped and move away from Gintoki. "Father!" She bowed her head respectfully towards the man while Gintoki felt confused.
'What was she about to say?....I didn't get to hear it! Go back and rest some more old man, we were having a moment here!' Gintoki cursed in his mind.
"...(Y/N), who is this?" The man who had a scary face turned to Gintoki. "H-He's a friend. Princess Soyo invited him here, Father." (Y/N) still had her head bowed.
"Well, I suppose it will be alright if we had a few more guests for tomorrow's celebration." The man nodded approvingly.
"Celebration?" (Y/N) froze and looked up.
"Father, what do you mean?" She asked, her eyebrows furrowing together. "Your coronation and wedding will be held tomorrow." Her father casually said.
"W-What? Why was it moved earlier? Father, I wasn't informed!" (Y/N) protested strongly. "Why? Is there something wrong?....Are you hiding something from me, (Y/N)?" Her father's intense gaze made her flinch and shut her mouth. "Or is there a valid reason as to why you can't marry Shuichi?"
"....No. It's nothing, Father." She bowed her head again.
"Good. I thought something had changed, it appears I was wrong." Her father's eyes glanced over to Gintoki who flinched before he exited the room.
"(Y/N)-" Gintoki reached out to (Y/N), who moved away from him.
"....Please go," She muttered lowly as she tipped her head down and turned her back on him.
"I get it...." Gintoki nodded as he made his way out. Once out, he met with Princess Soyo and Kagura.
"(Y/N)-chan's father has invited you three to the celebration tomorrow. He said you can stay here for the night." Princess Soyo informed him, but Gintoki didn't even respond.
Back in (Y/N)'s room, she was sobbing softly on her bed. Her heart, was in pain. She felt like her chest was being stabbed with a knife a thousand times over.
Falling in love was painful.
"(Y/N)?....." Another knock came to her door and she knew whose voice it was. It was the voice of her soon-to-be husband, Shuichi. Shuichi entered her room to see her sobbing on her bed.
"What's wrong?" He asked softly, Shuichi was a gentleman who was very kind and caring. "S-Shu...I-I'm sorry, I-I fell in love." (Y/N) confessed as she bowed her head to him.
"....Everyone falls in love in their life. It's just a sad thing that I fell in love with you while you fell in love with someone else."Shuichi smiled as he stroked her hair.
"I-If I said I wanted to call off our wedding....will you agree?" She asked him, expecting him to get angry or lash out.
But he didn't. Instead, he smiled softly at her.
"If that's what you want, then so be it." He nodded at her. "R-Really?"
---
"Who is it?...." Gintoki meekly called out, he was in the room where they were supposed to stay at, sulking all by himself. Kagura and Shinpachi were on a tour of the palace with Princess Soyo, while Gintoki had no energy to even move a limb.
The knocking on the door continued. "Just enter already, damn it!" Gintoki slightly raised his voice and he hears the door slide open to reveal (Y/N).
"...(Y/N)?" Gintoki's eyes widened as he shot up to his feet. "Come on, we should go while Soyo's distracting everyone!" She smiled and took him by the hand again.
She swiftly ran place to place, until they were eventually out of the palace. "W-What are you doing?!" Gintoki asked her, out of breath when they successfully exited the palace.
"Ahahah, I read in JUMP that this was how those protagonists profess their love!" (Y/N) smiled at him, but Gintoki was confused.
"What are you saying? You're getting married tomorrow!" Gintoki says, looking at her incredulously. But, (Y/N) only giggled at him.
"I'm not."
"You are."
"No, I'm not."
"What?...."
"I cancelled the wedding." (Y/N) says excitedly as she interwined her hands with his. "I told Shuichi about it and he agreed to help me pursuade father to stop the wedding." (Y/N) laughed lightly.
"But...as a princess who's next in line, there's only one way that I won't get married off," She pauses, seeing Gintoki still looking confused.
"I'm getting my right to the throne revoked." She cracked a huge smile at him.
"WHAT?!"
"Technically speaking, I am still a princess. But, that means that even if my father or my brothers die, I can't ever succeed the throne." She explained, as Gintoki sighed in disbelief.
"How could you do that?" He asked him, gently holding her hands in his large ones.
"I asked you if you were willing to sacrifice everything for me. But, you never asked if I was willing to sacrifice everything for you, and I am." She cheekily grinned.
"Besides, I have 2 younger brothers, they can inherit the throne. I never really wanted to become a queen anyways. It's too much work." She gave him a small smile.
"I don't wanna be a queen, I'd rather be a coward in love." She giggles as she leans closer to Gintoki, going on her tiptoes, she softly pressed her lips against his.
Gintoki was stunned for a while, before he melted into the kiss. He placed a hand on the back of her head to push her deeper into the kiss.
"Yeah," Gintoki softly said once they broke away. "I'd rather be a coward in love with you too." He smiled.
