Amity's intro
Water. Earth. Fire. Air.
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed her most, she vanished. A hundred years passed, and me, Willow and Gus discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Luz. And although her airbending skills are great, she has a lot to learn before she's ready to save anyone.
But I believe Luz can save the world
The episode opens on board a Fire Nation ship where Luz finally regains consciousness. The camera zooms out on her face as she opens her eyes and rises from her bed, visibly shaken and in pain, and with her hair being longer now.
“What happened?” (Sees the Fire Nation designs and flag and immediately assumes she has been captured.) “Oh no!” Luz said
She leaves her room, carefully creaking open the door and peering outside for any sign of Fire Nation soldiers. Using her glider as a crutch, Luz stumbles across the hall, occasionally leaning on the wall for support due to being weak. She stops at a turn in the hallway upon hearing two guards, who are actually Pipsqueak and The Duke, talking to each other.
“You hear something?” (Luz retreats behind the wall, where she dons a determined look and quickly steps out to send a weak air blast at them, which only ruffles their clothes, and moves past the hallway.) “She's awake!” (The two begin chasing Luz, who struggles to escape.) “Stop! Wait!” Pipsqueak said
Luz manages to reach the deck of the ship, however, she stumbles on the stairway and drops her staff. It slides over to where Hakoda and Bato, disguised as Fire Nation soldiers, are petting King.
(Confused.) “King?” Luz asked
King runs toward Luz, jumps on her shoulder and licks her face. Amity, Camila and Boscha, standing near the edge of the ship, hear the events.
“Twinkle Toes! That's gotta be you!” Boscha said
“Luz!” Camila said
“Luz, you're awake!” Amity said (The three race over to her.)
“Are you sure?” (Rubs eyes.) “I feel like I'm dreaming.” Luz said
(Hugs Luz.) “You're not dreaming. You're finally awake.” Amity said
(Hugs Luz, is disguised as a Fire Nation guard.) “Luz, good to see you back with the living, buddy!” Willow said
“Willow?” Luz asked (Breathes heavily, appears to be passing out.)
“Uh-oh, somebody catch her, he's going to-” Boscha didn’t finish
The screen becomes black as Luz collapses to the floor, Amity running short of catching her. The shot cuts to the entire group, including Appa, surrounding Luz who is now in Amity's arms. Appa for the first time since being captured by the sandbenders has a new saddle. Meanwhile, on another ship, Lilith is heading toward the Fire Nation. Lai joins her.
“Aren't you cold?” Lai asked
“I've got a lot on my mind. It's been so long, over three years since I was home. I wonder what's changed. I wonder how I've changed.” Lilith said
(Yawns.) “I just asked if you were cold, I didn't ask for your whole life story.” (Lilith frowns at her sarcastic response. Lai giggles and holds her face in her hands.) “Stop worrying.” Lai said
The two kiss. Lai exits, and Lilith stays there with an expression of relief on her face. We return to the ship where Team Avatar is on. Luz is awake once again. She sits in front of Amity, also sitting, surrounded by Gus, Willow, Eda, Camila and Boscha. Appa rests behind them. Luz receives a robe to cover her.
“Why are we on a Fire Nation ship? Why is everyone dressed this way? And why am I the only one who's completely out of it?” Luz asked (Luz and Amity are left alone.)
“You need to take it easy, okay? You got hurt pretty bad.” (Smiling at her.) “I like how long your hair is now.” Amity said
“I have longer hair?” (Feels it.) “How long was I out?” Luz asked
“A few weeks.” Amity said
“Everything okay?” Hakoda asked
(Looking away, annoyed. Annoyed tone.) “We're fine, Hakoda.” Amity said
(To Luz.) “I'm Hakoda, Gus’ father.” (Luz moves to shake his outstretched hand.)
(Placing her hands on Luz's shoulders stopping her.) “She knows who you are. I just said your name, didn't I?” Amity asked
“I guess you're right.” Hakoda said
(Removing Amity's hand, she shakes Hakoda's hand.) “Nice to officially meet you, Chief Hakoda.” Luz said
“It's an honor to meet you.” Hakoda said
“Great, great, so now you guys have finally met. So would you mind giving us a little privacy?” Amity asked
“Of course.” Hakoda said (Walks away.)
“Are you mad at Gus’ dad or something?” Luz asked (Amity looks at Hakoda leave with an expression of annoyance on her face.)
(Confused look.) “What, not at all. Why would you say that?” Amity asked
Luz shrugs and murmurs as if to say "I don't know." but gasps in pain.
“Maybe we should go upstairs.” (Helping Luz up.) “You need a healing session. Eda, gonna need your help.” Amity said
“Coming.” Eda said
Back in Luz's room on the ship. Eda bends some water onto the scar left by Kikimora's lightning attack.
“Tell me where the pain feels most intense.” Eda said
“Mmm, a little higher. Uhhh!” Luz said
Luz briefly flashes back to the battle at Old Ba Sing Se where she rose into the Avatar State, then back to reality.
“Are you okay, Luz?” Amity asked
“Wow, you're definitely in the right area there.” Luz said
“I can feel a lot of energy twisted up around there.” (Begins to remove the water.) “Let me just see if I can-” Eda didn’t finish
As Eda bends the water from Luz's scar, she suddenly jerks backward and again flashes back to the battle at Old Ba Sing Se, to the moment where she was shot by Kikimora's lightning. The flashback scene then changes to Amity tearfully looking over Luz, looking comatose, flying on top of Appa as they flee Ba Sing Se. After that, she snaps back to reality.
“I went down! I didn't just get hurt, did I? It was worse than that. I was gone! But I was brought back.” Luz said
“I just used the spirit water from the North Pole. I don't know what I did exactly.” Eda said
(Turning to look at her.) “You saved me.” Luz said
(Placing a hand on the side of her face.) “You need to rest.” Amity said
The scene switches to the Fire Nation Capital, Li and Lo addressing a crowd below.
“Your Admiral Kikimora, clever and beautiful, disguised herself as the enemy and entered the Earth Kingdom's Capital. In Ba Sing Se, she found the ex-commander Lilith, and together they faced the Avatar …” Li started
“And the Avatar fell! And the Earth Kingdom fell!” Lo and Li said
“Kikimora's agents quickly overtook the entire city. They went to Ba Sing Se's great walls …” Li started
“And brought them down!” Li and Lo said
“The armies of the Fire Nation surged through the walls and swarmed over Ba Sing Se, securing our victory.” Li said
A flashback shows the Dai Li taking down Ba Sing Se's walls and the Fire Nation troops entering the city as Earth Kingdom citizens look on with fear. Tanks are seen approaching the Ba Sing Se's royal palace before flashing back to Li and Lo with Kikimora approaching between them.
“Now the heroes have returned home!” Li and Lo said
“Your admiral, Kikimora!” Lo said (Crowd cheers.)
“And after three long years, your ex-commander has returned …” Li started
“Lilith!” Lo and Li said
Lilith approaches with a worried expression. Crowd cheers. We now go back to Team Avatar's ship. Willow sits on a crate with a map with the others surrounding her as she narrates past events.
“After what happened at Ba Sing Se, we had to get you to safety. We flew back to Chameleon Bay where we found Gus’ father and the other Water Tribe men.” (Flashback of the Earth King preparing to leave by taking off his Earth King robes, revealing traveling robes beneath.) “The Earth King decided he wanted to travel the world in disguise, so he set off alone.” (Bosco is shown taking off his own attire and hat before the Earth King jumps onto Bosco’s back and they set off.) “Well, not completely alone.” (Cut back to Willow continuing the story.) “Soon, the bay was overrun by Fire Nation ships. Rather than fight them all, we captured a single ship and made it our disguise. Since then we've been traveling west. We crossed through the Serpent's Pass a few days ago. We've seen a few Fire Nation ships, but none have bothered us.” Willow said
“So what now?” Luz asked
“We've been working on a modified version of the invasion plan.” Hakoda said
(Sharply.) “It's Willow's invasion plan.” Gus said
“Yes, Willow's plan. We won't be able to mount a massive invasion without the Earth King's armies, but the solar eclipse will still leave the Fire Nation vulnerable.” Hakoda said
“So we're planning a smaller invasion. Just a ragtag team of our friends and allies from around the Earth Kingdom. We already ran into Pipsqueak and The Duke.” Willow said
(Eating noodles with The Duke on his shoulder.) “Good to see you again, Luz!” Pipsqueak said
“I thought The Duke was Pipsqueak, but I didn’t think the name would mislead the two, no offense.” Camila said
“None taken, it happens a lot.” Pipsqueak said
“And the best part is, the eclipse isn't even our biggest advantage!” (Whispers.) “We have a secret…” (Looks at both of her sides.) “You!” Willow said
“Me?” Luz asked
“Yep, the whole world thinks you're dead! Isn't that great?” Willow asked (Stands up and raises both of her fists triumphantly.)
Luz is shocked. Cut to Luz looking out to the water from the side of the boat.
“The world thinks I'm dead? How is that good news? That's terrible!” Luz said
(Approaching Aang.) “No, it's great! It means the Fire Nation won't be hunting us anymore! And even better, they won't be expecting you on the Day of Black Sun!” Willow said
“No, no, no, no, no. You have no idea. This is so messed up!” Luz said
Another Fire Nation ship approaches.
“I'll handle this. The Avatar is back.” Luz said (Opens glider and grunts in pain.)
(Approaching Luz.) “Luz, wait! Remember, they don't know we're not Fire Nation!” Amity said
Sweating, Luz puts her glider away.
“Everyone just stay calm.” (He and Bato put their helmets on.) “Bato and I will take care of this.” Hakoda said
Pipsqueak and The Duke cover Appa and King, while Luz, Amity, Gus, Willow, Eda, Camila and Boscha hide in a square hole.
“I hate not being able to do anything.” Luz said
“Hopefully, you won't need to.” Boscha said
“Be quiet, here they come.” Eda said
Crew from the other ship boards Team Avatar's ship.
“Commander, why are you off course? All Western Fleet ships are supposed to be moving toward Ba Sing Se to support the occupation!” the Fire Navy officer said
“Actually, we're from the Eastern Fleet. We have orders to deliver some cargo.” Hakoda said
“Ahhh ... Eastern Fleet. Well, nice of Admiral Chan to let us know he was sending one of his ships our way.” the Fire Navy officer said
“I'm sure Admiral Chan meant no disrespect, sir.” Bato said
“I mean, how hard is it to write a quick note and send a hawk our way?” the Fire Navy officer asked
“Next time, we'll send” (Bato and Hakoda glance at each other.) “two hawks to make sure you get the message.” Hakoda said
The two bow to each other, and Hakoda and Bato exit.
“Sir, Admiral Chan has been on leave for two months at Ember Island.” a Guard said
“What? Why doesn't anyone ever tell me anything? Something's not right, they should have known that. I think this is a captured ship.” (Whispering.) “Just stay quiet until we're safely across the ramp. Then we'll sink this ship.” the Fire Navy officer said
Boscha, hearing this, emerges.
“They know!” Boscha said
Boscha metalbends the bridge between the ships off. The captain and his guards fall into the water. Gus and Eda create a large wave which separates the other ship from theirs. Team Avatar's ship departs quickly. The captain and his guards from the other ship climbs back on board theirs by rope ladder.Meanwhile, back at the Fire Nation Capital, Lilith feeds turtle ducks in a lake with some bread. Kikimora joins her.
“You seem so downcast. Has Lai gotten to you already? Though actually, Lai has been in a strangely good mood lately.” Kikimora said
“I haven't seen the Emperor yet. I haven't seen him in three years, since I was banished.” Lilith said
“So what?” Kikimora asked
“So, I didn't capture the Avatar.” Lilith said
“Who cares? The Avatar is dead …” (Lilith looks away.) “unless you think she somehow miraculously survived.” Kikimora said
Lilith flashes back to when Amity explained about the vial of spirit water in the Crystal Catacombs.
(During flashback.) “This is water from the spirit oasis at the north pole. It has special properties, Gus told me to keep it safe for something important.” Amity said
Back to the present.
“No. There's no way she could have survived.” Lilith said (They glare at each other.)
“Well, then I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.” Kikimora said
Back at the ocean. The second ship begins firing at Team Avatar's. Boscha takes an earthbending stance while The Duke stands behind her to guide her.
“Load me up!” Boscha said
Pipsqueak drops a boulder in front of Boscha who begins earthbending it at the attacking ship. It hits a catapult as another fires. The others try to fight back with a series of rocks that Boscha earthbends at the other ship. With The Duke's guidance, Boscha earthbends another piece of rock and sends it to intercept the oncoming fireball. Luz, inside the ship with Willow, makes a move to help but is stopped by Willow. In frustration she bangs her head against her staff. The other ship fires a harpoon, piercing a hole in Team Avatar's ship's bottom. As water flows in, Eda, noticing this, freezes the water below to plug the hole.
“Send up the water, I'm gonna give us some cover!” Amity said
Gus and Eda bring up the water for Amity to blast fire at it and create a fog screen. However, a fireball makes its way through and destroys the rocks that Boscha had been using.
Cut back to Luz and Willow in the ship.
“I just can't stand by and do nothing!” Luz said (Runs out.)
(Following.) “Luz, no!” (Grabs the staff.) “You're still hurt, and you have to stay secret! Just let us handle this.” Willow said
“Fine.” Luz said (Grabs her staff and walks away.)
Two fireballs hit the ship causing a fire. Gus quickly extinguishes it with waterbending.
“How are we doing?” Boscha asked
“Things couldn't get much worse.” (A serpent rises from the water near their ship. Willow turns around and looks at it in despear. Yelling.) “The universe just loves proving me wrong, doesn't it?” Willow asked
“You make it too easy!” Camila said
The serpent is hit by a fireball from the other ship. In anger, it wraps itself around the other ship, allowing Team Avatar's ship to escape.
“Thank you, the universe!” Willow said
Team Avatar's ship arrives at a port in a town. Luz is alone in her room, until some of the gang enter.
“Hey, Luz! We're going into town to find some dinner.” Boscha said
(Clutching her stomach.) “Well, I am pretty hungry. Maybe dinner's a good idea.” Luz said
“Here,” (Offering a Fire Nation bandana.) “tie this around your head. It will cover your arrow.” Willow said
“I'm not going out if I can't wear my arrow proudly!” Luz said (She lies back down.)
“Luz, come on. Be practical.” Willow said
“An airbender wearing their arrow proudly is really important.” Camila said
(Placing a hand on Willow's shoulder.) “You guys go ahead without us. We'll catch up to you.” (Willow, Camila and Boscha exit. Amity sits on Luz's bed, placing a hand on her shoulder.) “I think I understand why being a secret bothers you so much. You don't want people to think you failed.” Amity said
“You're right, I don't. But the problem is, I did fail!” Luz said
“Luz, that's not true.” Amity said
(Getting up.) “It is true. I was in Ba Sing Se. I was there! But I lost. And now the Earth Kingdom has fallen for good.” Luz said
“It's not for good.” (Getting up too.) “Remember, there's still a plan. The invasion!” Amity said
“And I hate the invasion plan, too!” (Rips down the Fire Nation flag covering her staff.) “I don't want you or anyone else risking your lives to fix my mistakes! I've always known that I would have to face the Fire Emperor. But now I know I need to do it alone.” Luz said
(Moving to comfort her.) “Luz …” Amity started
“Amity, please! Just go ... please.” Luz said
(Exiting.) “Is there anything you need?” Amity asked
“I need to redeem myself. I need my honor back.” Luz said
Back at the Fire Nation Capital, Lilith returns to the royal palace and prepares to face the Fire Emperor, Belos. She breathes deeply and enters. We briefly see Belos before cutting back to Team Avatar's ship. Amity returns to Luz's room.
“I brought you some food!” (Notices Luz has gone missing.) “Oh no …” Amity said (Drops the food tray and runs.)
Cut to Luz, flying on her glider. Back at the Royal Palace, Lilith bows before Belos.
“You've been away for a long time. I see the weight of your travels has changed you. You have redeemed yourself, my new admiral.” (Approaches Lilith, the camera pans up to view Belos's full face for the first time.) “Welcome home.” Belos said
Luz struggles to remain in flight against her injuries. Back on the ship, Amity runs toward Bato and Hakoda. She is in tears.
“I'll leave you two alone.” Bato said (Exits.)
“What's wrong, Amity?” Hakoda asked
“She left.” Amity said
“What?” Hakoda asked
“Luz. She just took her glider and disappeared. She has this ridiculous notion that she has to save the world alone, that it's all her responsibility.” Amity said
“Maybe that's her way of being brave.” Hakoda said
“It's not brave, it's selfish and stupid! We could be helping her, and I know the world needs her, but doesn't she know how much we need her, too? How can she just leave us behind?” Amity asked
“You're talking about me too, aren't you?” Hakoda asked
“How could you leave us?” (Tears begin sliding down her face, and she attempts to wipe them away.) “I mean, I know we had Gran-Gran, and she loved us, but we were just so lost without you.” Amity said
Hakoda moves to comfort her as she turns away.
“I'm so sorry, Amity.” Hakoda said (Pulls Amity into his arms.)
(Embraces Gus’ father.) “I understand why you left. I really do, and I know that you had to go, so why do I still feel this way? I'm so sad and angry and hurt!” Amity said
“I love you more than anything. You, my son and your friend are my entire world. I thought about you every day when I was gone and every night when I went to sleep, I would lie awake missing you so much it would ache.” Hakoda said
The scene switches to the Fire Nation Royal Palace.
“I am proud of you, Admiral Lilith. I am proud because you and admiral Kikimora conquered Ba Sing Se. I am proud because when your loyalty was tested by your treacherous lieutenant, you did the right thing and captured the traitor. And I am proudest of all of your most legendary accomplishment, you slayed the Avatar.” Belos said
(Shocked.) “What did you hear?” Lilith asked
“Kikimora told me everything. She said she was amazed and impressed at your power and ferocity at the moment of truth.” Belos said
The scene changes back to Luz continuing her flight, struggling. She comes upon a Fire Nation blockade.
“A blockade.” Luz said
She takes a deep breath and swims under it. Upon emerging, she finds a tree bark and rides it like a surfboard through the water. A storm turns the seas very choppy. She falls off and into the water and her staff flies away. Back to the palace, Kikimora is asleep when Lilith enters her room.
“Why'd you do it?” Lilith asked
(Smiling, with her eyes still shut.) “You're going to have to be a little more specific.” Kikimora said
“Why did you tell the Emperor that I was the one who killed the Avatar?” Lilith asked
“Can't this wait until the morning?” Kikimora asked
“It. Can't.” Lilith said
(Sighs and opens her eyes.) “Fine. You seemed so worried about how the Emperor would treat you because you hadn't captured the Avatar. I figured if I gave you the credit, you'd have nothing to worry about.” Kikimora said
“But why?” Lilith asked
(Getting out of bed.) “Call it a generous gesture. I wanted to thank you for your help and I was happy to share the glory.” Kikimora said
“You're lying.” Lilith said
(Walking past Lilith.) “If you say so …” Kikimora said
“You have another motive for doing this, I just haven't figured out what it is.” Lilith said
“Please Lilith, what ulterior motive could I have? What could I possibly gain by letting you get all the glory for defeating the Avatar?” (Approaching close to Lilith, she places a hand on her shoulder.) “Unless, somehow, the Avatar was actually alive. All that glory would suddenly turn to shame and foolishness. But you said it yourself, that was impossible.” (Lilith begins to leave.) “Sleep well, Lulu.” Kikimora said
Back in the sea, Luz struggles to stay above water or reach her glider. After letting out a scream, a wave overcomes her and she falls into the water. She re-emerges after a brief time.
“I'm not gonna make it. I failed.” (Within the lightning strikes, the spirit of Moku appears before Luz.) “Moku?” Luz asked
“You haven't failed, Luz.” Moku said
“But everyone thinks I'm dead again. They think I've abandoned them, and I'm losing this war. I'm letting the whole world down.” Luz said
“If anyone is to blame for the state of the world, it is me. I should have seen this war coming and prevented it. You inherited my problems and my mistakes. But I believe you are destined to redeem me and save the world.” Moku said
“I don't know.” Luz said
Moonlight shines onto Luz as Loe's spirit appears above.
“You already saved the world. And you'll save the world again, but you can't give up.” Loe said
The storm ends. The spirit of Moku disappears, while Loe's spirit descends toward Luz.
(Determined.) “You're right. I won't give up.” Luz said
She creates a wave and surfs it with the tree bark. Loe's spirit watches her leave and ascends back to the moon. Luz is washed up at the base of a volcano, on the same crescent island where Moku's temple once was. Later, King finds her and licks her face, waking her up. Amity, Gus, Willow, Eda, Camila and Boscha find her, reaching her via Appa. Amity runs to hug her, her worried look changing to happiness.
“You're okay!” Amity said
They all, including King and Appa, come together for a group hug.
“I have so much to do.” Luz said
“I know, but you'll have our help.” Amity said
“You didn't think you could get out of training just by coming to the Fire Nation, did you?” Eda asked
“What about the invasion?” Luz asked
“We'll join up with my dad and the invasion force the day of the eclipse.” Gus said
(Notices Luz's damaged staff has washed ashore.) “Hey! What's ... oh, it's your glider.” Boscha said
“It's okay. If someone saw it, it would give away my identity. It's better for now that no one knows I'm alive.” Luz said
Flies up and sticks it in the volcano's lava trails, causing it to catch fire as they depart.
Scene fades to credits.
