we all need a voice of reason.

you know, like that one voice in our head that tells us if we're actually seeing something or if we're just imagining it?

yeah. we all have one.

but, as you turned your head to find yourself face-to
-face with a grinning minho, you were honestly starting to question your sanity.

because it would be impossible for minho to be here.

minho was in korea.

and you? you do not live in korea.

so why is it, that even after blinking twenty times, you still found the exact same boy smiling back at you?

"yes i'm actually here," minho chuckled at seeing your confused look. "you're not going crazy."

oh look. my imagination is now talking to me.

if i ignore it, then it'll go away.

you blinked again, trying to force your attention away from the boy who could not possibly exist in the flesh.

luckily, another voice directed your attention away from the minho of your imaginations.

"girlfriend?"

you looked to see kageyama with an incredulous look on his face.

"yes. girlfriend. that's what i said," minho repeated, raising his eyebrow at kageyama's glance.

wait.

is my imagination and my stupid ass partner talking to each other rn????

you looked between minho and kageyama.

they looked back towards you.

you opened your mouth before shutting it abruptly.

then, as if the voice of reason in your head was suddenly telling you that minho was, in fact, not fake, you reacted.

"you're real?"

minho laughed at the shocked look on your face.

"yes i'm real. i'm visiting because i missed you, babe."

oh minho's visiti—

wait what?

wait...BABE???

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

you were about to say something, but minho cut you off again. "did you forget that your boyfriend was coming? we stayed up late texting last night, remember?"

he gave you a cheeky smile while the shock never left your face.

a million different thoughts were running through your brain at this moment.

and you comprehended none of them.

did you text minho last night?

yes, yes you did. you did in fact text minho last night.

but did he tell you he was visiting?

no.

and did he tell you that he was now your boyfriend?

also no.

he failed to ever mention anything about this unexpected (but obviously planned) visit.

even as confused as you were, you could tell from the look minho was giving you that he's asking you to play along.

istg this bitch sure as hell better have an explanation for this later.

"ah yes, of course," you said slowly, through gritted teeth, eyeing minho (in only slight amusement). "how could i have forgotten that my boyfriend is coming today?"

minho winked at you, before he continued. "oh babe, who's this?"

minho directed his gaze right at kageyama.

fuck.

and there goes your hopes of never being involved in drama.

once again, those hopes evaporated like water.

kageyama, who was staring at the conversation between you and minho, looked murderous.

like he could actually kill someone right then and there.

"this is, uh, kagey—" you started, but minho didn't let you finish.

"ah yes," he interjected, in a knowing voice. "tobio kageyama... that's right. you told me all about him."

kageyama blinked before he started glaring at you.

"what the hell is this?'

you turned your head innocently. "what is what?"

"really?" kageyama sneered. "your boyfriend?"

apparently so.

"yeah," you nodded as you gave minho a smile. "why? you got a problem?"

kageyama rolled his eyes. "the problem," he snapped, "is that our project is unsaved and now your fucking dumbass boyfriend is here."

"actually," minho narrowed his eyes at kageyama. "i major in pre-med. with the highest average in my year. and what about you? oh, right—sports entertainment." minho gave kageyama a distasteful look. "must be...so difficult."

oh SHIT.

you almost laughed.

you really almost did. (but that would've blown the whole cover, so you didn't.)

god, i love minho.

minho gave you another small wink as kageyama looked towards you.

"get your boyfriend out of here," kageyama said plainly, his eyes narrowing.

"actually, i think i should leave now," you smiled coldly. "since i have more important things to attend to."

"you bitch. who do you think you are, leaving because of—"

"don't speak to her."

kageyama raised his eyebrow at minho.

"excuse me?"

"i said," minho glared, "don't. speak. to. her."

kageyama scoffed. "what are you, her security guard?"

"no, actually. i'm her boyfriend."

oh wow. how many times is minho going to say the word 'boyfriend' today?

you gave a small sigh.

you knew that you really shouldn't let this continue and get any more heated than it already is.

"kageyama, i'm leaving," you said in a firm tone. "we can do this project another time."

you eyed minho, as if telling him to stop making even more drama.

minho, however, did not follow through with your request.

"it's really too bad you got stuck with someone like him," minho started again as he merely grinned at you. "it must be hard working with someone that's got no brains."

you cringed.

because you knew what was coming before it even happened.

in a single millisecond, kageyama had stood up and looked like he was about to murder him while minho only kept his provoking look on his face—

but you cut both of them off.

"stop!" you silenced both of them with a glare.

kageyama stopped his arm in midarm as minho kept a cocky look.

"that's enough," you said through your teeth. "kageyama, insult me all you want, i don't care. leave my frie—leave my boyfriend out of this."

kageyama laughed without mirth. "now you're defending him?"

"yeah, i am," you said in a bored tone. "now, i'm going to be leaving, but we can discuss any further arrangements over email. yes, it's 100% your fault the project is not saved, but we can work through it again if you'll leave my boyfriend alone."

as you finished, you grabbed your bag from the floor and started walking towards minho.

but before you could even take a single step forwards, something pulled you back.

hard.

you felt your wrist being yanked backwards with considerable force, causing you to stumble as you almost fell onto kageyama.

and before kageyama could react, you slapped him.

right across the face.

also hard.

{ ok i just know someone is gonna make a comment ab this... ILY ALL BUT YALL NEED TO GET UR HEADS OUT OF THE GUTTER- }

"don't touch me," you snapped.

you shook your wrist out of kageyama's grasp as you walked away.

how many times have you walked away from kageyama now? more times than able to count, it seems.

you were acutely aware of the gazes from everyone else in the cafe.

at this point, you've gotten used to the scenes that were caused when you were in the same room as kageyama. it's unavoidable, really.

unfortunate...but unavoidable.

ignoring the curious looks of strangers, your attention finally fell onto the boy that your voice of reason at first deemed as imaginary.

minho smiled, taking your hand immediately in his.

you rolled your eyes at the act that this boy forced you into.

there goes my peaceful, non-drama life, again.

looking straight into minho's amused face, you whispered.

"i'm going to kill you later."

"y/n!"

your smile widened as yuna ran towards you, with seojun not far behind.

"i've missed you," you breathed as yuna crushed you in a hug.

"i've missed you," yuna grinned.

"hey seojun," you smiled as you gave him a welcoming hug.

he smiled back. "been a while."

"what are you guys doing here?" you laughed.

this was like a gift from the heavens.

a terrible week of stress was now forgotten as you stood with your exchange friends.

"minho didn't tell you?" yuna raised his eyebrow. "he literally forced us to stay quiet so he can give you the surprise."

you looked at minho, who only smiled back.

midst your walk back with minho, your conversation was filled completely with the events earlier concerning kageyama.

"i forgot, okay?" minho retorted at yuna.

"you forgot?" yuna scoffed as she raised her arms in defeat. "how dumb could you be?"

"smarter than you," minho pushed her playfully.

"seojunnn~" yuna complained. "minho just punched me."

"punched?" minho said in exasperation. "that was a push you idiot."

"shut the fuck up. you hurt me."

you couldn't help but laugh along.

it's been so long since you've seen your friends from korea. and impossibly, it was like nothing has changed.

they were still the korean (*ahem kpop idols*) friends you've grown to love.

"wait wait," you stopped yuna as she was about to insult minho. "before you two start another argument... why are you guys here again?"

yuna gave minho an edging look. "minho, you wanna do the honours?"

minho's entire face brightened as he smiled.

"we're doing an exchange here."

you've gotta admit, the whole 'toxic jealousy act' from before felt really good.

but keeping it up????

that was a whole other level of toxic.

"no," you said in a hard tone. "absolutely not."

minho pouted. "please?"

you groaned. "i can't do that."

"but i'm literally here. that's like the best fucking opportunity to ever exist.

you chuckled. "minho. i'm not letting you be my pretend boyfriend just to get back at kageyama."

"why not?"

"because that's toxic as fuck."

"but don't you want to try being toxic?"

you paused.

your voice of reason kept you in place.

don't even think about it. don't fucking even.

"no," you denied. "besides, he doesn't care. he has a girlfriend."

"from this afternoon, it sure as hell looked like he cared."

you looked up at minho to meet his mischievous gaze.

and you could feel your voice of reason being repressed.

damn it.

why were you finding it harder and harder to deny the request?

the absolutely insane and TOXIC request?

to be honest, you never expected that the friends you met on an exchange would be doing an exchange at your university for a year.

they had specifically emailed the admissions council to let them come, and even though kyoto doesn't offer any programs, they were allowed to finish their first semester online while taking their courses next semester directly from kyoto.

it filled your heart with joy when you realized that you'd be able to see your exchange friends every day. every day...for a year.

and if your friends would only be here for a year, would it not be a good idea to pretend that you have your social life together?

it would make kageyama see that you've moved on... just like how he has moved on.

maybe it'd be less painful when you thought about lana.

maybe it'd shrink the undeniable pain by a fraction...a small fraction, but a fraction nonetheless.

besides, what's so wrong with being toxic for once?

everything happening in your life is already toxic (for the most part) anyways.

you sighed, not believing what was coming out of your mouth.

"fine. let's do it."

fuck. there goes my voice of reason.

minho's smile widened. "yay! i'm like your exchange boyfriend."

"my pretend exchange boyfriend."

"boyfriend exchange?" minho beamed.

you sighed before admitting defeat.

"boyfriend exchange."
