After my last class of the day, I set to work mowing the lawn. Then I start cleaning inside the house.
"Wow, I'm sorry, did we switch roles? Are you the wife now?" Emery chuckles when he comes through the door and finds me vacuuming. He looks tired. He's still beautiful, with his shapely cheekbones and soft bow lips and tight golden curls - like a Greek god - but he also looks like shit.
I switch the vacuum off temporarily and look up.
"I'm helping out because I care about you, and you had a rough day," I explain, not fucking around one iota. "Plus, you're busy, what with violin and everything."
Emery is speechless. "And just to be clear, all the stuff about you being the wife, it doesn't mean that I want you to do all the work alone. We have a system. You do the cooking and cleaning; I handle the lawn-mowing, car problems, fixing things around the house, pest control, that kind of thing."
Emery nods.
"I know."
I nod.
"Good." I switch the vacuum cleaner back on.
