here's the bonus flashback bc ily—

standing with your back pressed against the cold wall, the silence once again consumed the closet.

with your phone still clutched in your hand from the ongoing call, you could hear every intake of breath from the person who was standing directly in front of you.

it had been minutes since either of you had said a single word, and kageyama was giving you a pressing look.

he was waiting for you to (finally) explain yourself.

you tried looking away from his gaze, focusing your attention at an indefinite point ahead, but kageyama's gaze burned through you.

you sighed.

screw this shit, idc anymore.

"FINE OKAY?"

he flinched at your sudden scream, which gave you a moment's satisfaction as you continued.

"it's me, the person you've been texting for the past a lot of months."

kageyama recovered from your surprise outburst, a smile starting to form. he, however, seemed set on wanting to tease you about it.

"what in the hell are you talking about?"

you took a deep breath, trying to control the uncontrollable urge to punch him.

lol just kidding, i'd never punch his beautiful face :b.

not that his face is even as beautiful as akaashi's😍

"i'm your number buddy. and that's why i acted all weird every time i saw you." you rolled your eyes. "happy now?"

"no, not really actually."

"oH well if you don't know what i'm talking about then i have somewhere to be," you concluded. "goodbye, mr stranger."

kageyama stopped your progress. "wait," he said. "i'm kidding."

you sighed, then sat down on the ground of the closet. kageyama joined you; the both of you sat next to each other in the semi-dark closet.

you turned to look at him, finding his gaze already on you. his dark blue eyes were clear, with no trace of the anger that was there mere minutes ago.

which reminded you actually...

"you have BLUE eyes?" you fumed, your thoughts leading back to the betrayal you had felt the first time you saw kageyama.

"hm?" he looked confused.

"i said," you huffed, "you have BLUE eyes! you told me you had black eyes you fucking liar."

kageyama chuckled. "of all the things you remember, it's that?"

you were about to retort, but he cut you off. "and i can't believe you're calling me the liar after what you lied about for god knows how long."

"no but how can you lie about something like eye colour?" you scoffed.

"i didn't lie! they're literally black."

"bLaCk my ass. those are dark blue."

"okay but if i told you they were blue then you would have 100% simped."

"what the fuck—i DON'T simp."

kageyama raised his eyebrow.

okay so maybe i do simp, but still—

"but that still doesn't change the fact that you lied about your eyes," you objected.

"enough about my eyes," kageyama sighed. "we're supposed to be talking about how you're the liar."

"i didn't lie!"

"yes you fucking did."

at his words, you mind immediately thought back to what you've texted him during the past few weeks.

oh so maybe i did lie a little bit—

"well what do you want me to say now?" you asked, staring at your feet in front of you.

you hated confrontation.

"oh i don't know," kageyama replied, voice dripping in sarcasm. "maybe at least a 'sorry'?"

"why would i apologize?"

"because you fucking lied."

"but what if i'm not sorry about it—" you caught the deadly look kageyama gave you and fell silent.

"why didn't you tell me?" he demanded, seeing that you weren't going to reply.

"because."

"because what?"

"nothing."

he groaned. "why can't you tell me? you ghosted me for fucking months—"

"actually it was only like three weeks," you interrupted.

"okay whatever. you ghosted me for three weeks and you were all weird when you texted and when you were in person. why?"

"no reason."

you looked away, not meeting his eyes again.

"tell. me."

"no."

"tell me. why can't you?"

no you fucking blueberry i'm not telling you that the reason i didn't text back is because you look like a greek god and i was scared you'd never talk to me again when you saw my potato lookin ass.

only kidding, i am the hottest bitch in the world and we need the self love and confidence.

but still, @kAgEyAmA, it's not my fault you're looked too intimidating.

"what are you thinking about?" he asked you, seeing your concentrated look.

you blinked, not realizing that you had zoned out with a mental debate that happened in your own head.

"nothing," you replied.

kageyama rolled his eyes. "why can't you tell me?"

"because it's embarrassing."

"just tell me, i won't laugh."

as if i believe your lies😐

but you knew that kageyama wouldn't stop persisting, so with a sigh, you murmured, "it uh—may or may not be um because i thought you'd... uh... never talk to me after you saw... you know...what i looked like."

"and also," you dropped your voice to a low whisper, "you were also kinda sorta really intimidating."

kageyama looked confused. "why would i ditch you because of that?"

"um—" you started, not wanting to explain further. "n-no reason."

but he seemed to understand what you meant.

he groaned. "did you really think i was that shallow?"

"maybe?" you stammered.

kageyama seemed mad again. he gave you a glare. "i would never—"

kageyama breathed, not even sure what to say, so as a result, he just glared at you, fuming.

"i can't believe you. you avoid me for that small reason?"

"it's not a small reason!" you defended. "i didn't want to lose a friend!"

"you wouldn't have lost a friend!"

"but—" you stopped, not fully intaking what he said. "you're still my friend?"

kageyama rolled his eyes for what seemed like the millionth time. "yes, for fucks sake, i'm still your friend."

"really?"

"why do you sound so surprised?"

"because i thought you were mad?"

"i am," kageyama remarked. "but that doesn't mean we're not friends."

"so you forgive me for lying?" you asked, shocked.

he smiled slightly. "so you admit you were lying?"

"answer my damn question."

"you're not forgiven..." kageyama looked at you, "until you promise you won't act all weird again."

you felt relief and happiness flow through you. you hadn't lost your online friend—he wasn't even mad at you.

at least not that mad.

you felt the weight that had been on your shoulders for the past three weeks, lift.

you were so sure that kageyama would've unfriended your after everything that happened that you were prepared for the worst.

what did i do to deserve such a good friend?🧎‍♀️

"deal," you told kageyama, grinning for the first time in a long while.

kageyama tried to stop his smile, but it was too late. there you two were, on the cold floor of this janitor's closet, grinning from ear to ear.

"you wanna go back?" kageyama asked you. "it's cold in here."

you thought about it. "not really. let's stay here."

he looked amused. "you want to stay in the place you've been trying to leave for the past twenty minutes?"

"yeah and what aBoUt iT?"

he said nothing in reply, just gave an exasperated look as he looked at you.

"besides," you smiled, "i have to catch you up on life about the last three weeks."

after what seemed like an hour, you both finally decided that it was a good time to leave the sketchy janitor's closet.

you had told kageyama about everything that had happened—minus the fact that you had replaced his company with your other number buddy nor about the fact that you were starting to enjoy the company of your other number buddy too🔫—and all the awkwardness you had felt around him originally had somehow faded away.

the both of you had also laughed about your lame attempts of hiding your identity—let's not forget about the google translate, shall we?

"it's weird how easy i can talk with you," kageyama said as he helped you get up.

you secretly agreed wholeheartedly.

luckily, nothing had changed. in fact, everything felt normal for once, more normal than ever.

you stood up, your feelings calm, when you suddenly, you saw it by your foot.

a goddamn spider.

{ if this wasn't a book i'd give a headphone warning tbh 😍‼️ }

kageyama's eyes followed yours onto the spider, and before you can react, his hand went over your mouth, brushing your lips, as he stopped your scream of pure terror.

you jumped, crashing onto kageyama as you wrapped your arms around the closest thing for comfort.

"oi! stop freaking out—ow stop moving, i'll kill it for you!"

you opened your eyes—you had shut them off instinctively when you saw the spider—and found yourself in kageyama's embrace.

he was still covering your mouth, making sure that you weren't going to scream your ass off (which you probably would've done).

kageyama's arms, which subconsciously were wrapped around you—to stop you from thrashing around that is—suddenly loosened as he looked down at you.

kageyama sighed, and without another word, he stretched out his leg, and...

{ wArNiNg: gRaPhIc cOntEnT aHeAd😩‼️ }

... smushed the spider, killing it in one blow.

"you okay?"

you were freaking out again—this time not because of the spider (which by the way, is now stuck on kageyama's shoe), but because you suddenly found yourself too close to this pretty setter.

you thrashed around, trying to put some distance between the two of you, when your face suddenly hit kageyama's hard chest.

"oi—stop moving."

you stopped immediately, blushing furiously.

as if sensing that you weren't going to scream, kageyama removed his hand which lingered at your lips, and gave a small laugh.

"of course you'd be the one that's scared of a tiny spider."

"i almost died," you pointed out in a small voice, in the same tone one would point of facts such as 'i'm a human,' or 'i love bts.'

actually i almost died twice and it's not even the spider's fault—

"you didn't almost die," kageyama sighed.

it seemed to just hit you that you were still right in kageyama's circle of arms.

you jumped, accidentally almost falling again, before saying a quick, "thank you for saving me from the spider and for um not hating me for lying to you but i really have to go now so bye."

you said it all in one breath, and before kageyama had even had the chance to reply, you were already gone, having ran out of the closet.

little did you know that in that exact moment, kageyama was smiling to himself, feeling the same euphoria at having his number buddy back.
