Forgetting

The hardest part of forgetting someone
Is the memories because they gave
You a reason to smile, a reason
To keep on living, a reason to
Start breathing, a means to feel alive.

The hardest part is when they leave,
Taking all of that newfound hope
And crushing it beneath their feet
As if you meant nothing to them
In the first place.

They say it's easy to forget,
"Just move on," they say,
But what they don't understand
Is that they were the only one
Who gave your life meaning.

It's not pathetic or stupid,
Genuine care is hard to find,
Especially in the world today,
But apparently I am stupid
Because I trusted you enough
Not to break my heart.

Forgetting you is the hardest part
Because you seep into my every thought,
Drowning every fiber of my being in you,
But you are millions of miles away,
Long gone, and I can't even apologize.
