Today I felt you in each throb
of my aching heart,
the sound was so loud within my chest
that I could hear it
beating erratically.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
Those sounds were followed
by great pain,
pain that I have not experienced
in a while.

The concern you felt was
etched onto your face.
You watched in silence as I
clutched my chest,
afraid it might burst,
but I said nothing and sat there,
enduring the pain.

I felt it writhe in agony,
twisting and turning
with each infernal beat,
screaming for an end,
yet I could only sit
and listen.

Thump! Thump! Thump!
I'm sure that if you listen,
then you could hear it too -
the erratic mournful cry
that accompanies each beat
as I smile, pretending that
everything is fine.

You look at me and ask if I am okay.
You must have heard it!
No, you just know me well enough
to know that something is not right,
and you frown at me, taking one of my
hands in yours.

Sitting down next to me,
you rest your head on my chest,
and my face pales when realization strikes,
causing you to immediately look at me
with shocked and confused eyes,
like you cannot believe that I did not tell you.

It's beating erratically again.
Can you feel it pounding against my chest,
yearning to finally be free of its mournful song?
Thump! Thump! Thump!
I hold you close, pulling you tightly against my chest,
and all of my worries melt away,
into an infinite, dark abyss.

Today I felt you in each throb
of my aching heart,
the sound was so loud within my chest
that I could hear it
beating erratically.
You looked at me, with eyes full of concern
despite not knowing what was wrong,
and the pain multiplied
until I was left tired and unable
to feel anything else.
