Chapter 16.

History lesson.

Abbie woke up.

To the sound of frogs crooking.

She was laying on the floor of a cave but not the one she fell asleep in. It was the one in New Grange.

Beside her on the ground was Bran and the mirrors big round frame which surrounded a hole. This time a pillar of light was shooting up the hole touching the roof.

She stuck her head into the light and looked down.

She could see the room that she came from and John. He looked up at her and said.

"If it feels to good to be true, it is, to good to be true".

Then the hole filled in disappearing and the light was gone.

She stirred at the bare floor where the hole used to be. Then a big frog hopped into the space and crooked. She looked round the room and spotted four other big frogs.

"Your back!" Cried Catbad entering the cave. "Thank Danu. You could have been drowned . Foolish of you to jump in!"

"I thought it best than facing one eye and his men." Abbie said. "How did you escape them and what's with the frogs?

"Their not frogs but toads." Catbad told her .

"Well their one eye and his men. I turned them into toads."

He smiled. "A trick I learnt from Merlin."

Abbie tried to stand up but was too weak. Catbad ran to her and helped her up.

"Take it easy little high queen. That's a nasty bump you have on your head. hold still."

He placed two fingers on the wound and slowly said...

..."In the name of Dagda and Diancecht.

The wound was red, the cut was deep,

And the flesh was sore; but there will be

no more blood, and no more pain,

till the Gods come down to earth again."

Abbie could feel the wound disappearing contracting smaller until it was gone.

Catbad smiled "So What happened?"

"Pompeii!"

She said feeling a bit dissy.

"-All those people killed. If only the mirror brought me there a day earlier. I could have warned them."

"You can't change history Abbie. It was their time. Their destiny."

Catbad told her rubbing Brans head.

"-The spear? Did you get it?"

"Yes here it is?"

She handed the bundle to him.

Amazement filled his eyes and he opened it.

"You did it Abbie. You won. I knew you would"

Catbad hugged Abbie with joy.

"-Finally we have the spare of destiny. Cu Culainn will fulfil his destiny.. becoming the greatest hero of all Ireland....and now I have the power to send you back home."

He pointed the spear into the middle of the great round mirror frame.

Ice seemed to freeze out of the spear point spreading to the full length of the mirror frame.

Then the ice turned into glass.

Becoming a mirror once more.

"There all fixed."

He smiled.

"Ready to go home?"

He lifted the mirror and leaned it against the wall where Abbie first saw it.

Abbie couldn't believe it.

She felt like crying.

She won? Finally she is going home.

It all seems.......to good to be true.

A toad crooked.

"You never turned those men into toads."

Abbie said and watched the back of Catbad.

He paused.

No hesitated.

Then turned.

"What? Of course I did."

She just looked at him.

"Look your tied and hurt. Its ok. Your mind is playing tricks!"

"No you never turned those men into toads! " She accused and for an instant he hesitated again.

"Told you your foolish trick was doomed to fail!" One eye spat walking into the cave with his men.

"It worked!" Catbad bragged almost laughing.

He grabbed Abbie up off the ground.

Bran barked and jumped for Catbads throat.

The wolfhound squealed in pain and collapsed to the ground.

Abbie could see the arrow sticking out off the unmoving hound.

"Nooo!" She cried and squirmed to free herself from Catbads grasp but he was to strong.

"Easy Abbie there's nothing you can do. History can't be changed."

Catbad told her tightening his grip.

"-Cu Culainn is going to meet his destiny. He will become Ireland's greatest ever hero. His glorius death shall inspire future generations to sacrifice their lives for their county."

"-And it's all thanks to you for getting us the spear of destiny."

He moved her over to the mirror.

"-The only magic spear that can kill Cu Culainn."

He threw the spear head over to one eye.

"-Go have your people ready for the ambush. It is time to get your revenge!"

"Revenge?" Abbie asked.

One eye caught it in one hand.

"Your boyfriend killed my father Cu Roi. I am -Lugaid".

He pulled off his red eye patch scarf.

There was no hole or scars where his eye should have been.

It was as if he never had an eye there.

"I am- half human. Half fomorian and by todays end. I swear my father will be avenged."

He turned to go.

Abbie noticed a big scar across the back of his bald head.

Then it opened.

Not a scar but eyelids.

A big eye stirred at her.

It was not human more like a giant fish eye.

"You see Abbie, me and you aren't watching history pass us by!"

Catbad smiled whispering into her ear.

"We are taking part! Making history!"

"-When your sitting in your class reading about Cu Culainn be proud you helped me make him that famous."

He pushed her into the mirror and she disappeared.
