Rose

When I open my eyes, this time, there is nothing beeping or flashing, and the alarm has stopped, but my arms, legs and my waist have been strapped down under the sheet.

Once again, I notice I am naked. What type of people are they? I think about what happened before that person came into the room, I remember why I had to be put under a sleeping solution.

Because I found out I could feel an emotion, ha that sounds like a doctor. I don't want to think about it. So instead I do something else I haven't done in over five years, I speak.

'hello' I croak, as it is the only thing I can think of. What else are you meant to say?

A young man who looks about eighteen years old, walks into the room. He wears a grey tee-shirt and denim pants. As he passes a desk he pushes a set of buttons on it and the straps undo themselves, then he comes and sits in a chair next to my head I hadn't noticed before. He looks kind, but I can't help feeling very vulnerable even though there is a sheet over me. The man places his hand on my head and investigates my eyes,

'Do that again' he whispers.

I don't know what he is talking about, so I lie there and look back into his eyes. They are dark brown, but they are kind too. I feel like trusting him, even though I don't want to. He seems to see my confusion, so he says,

'Speak again'.

I pause to re gather my thoughts,

'Hello' I say again, a little louder this time. I realize after a second that I must sound like a five year old.

The man's face flushes with joy, and he tells me who he is,

'My name is Robert and I saved you from the beach' the he tells me quietly.

'It was you who brought me here' I say slurring most of the words.

Robert nods his head slowly, suddenly forgetting everything I just want to ask him,

'How... how can I feel again?'

Robert looks at me with confusion, I try again,

'how can I have feelings again, you know...' I feel stupid as I let the sentence hang.

I can see he understands, then he says my name,

'Rose' he pauses, thinking 'when you were on the beach yesterday something strange happened, I need you to give me some information then I can tell you. Can you do that?'

I nod my head, but pain fills my thoughts and I bring my hand to my head, groaning. Roberts face suddenly has a look of concern on it and he places his hand on my temple, his hand is soft, and I don't want him to move it. With my hand I grab his wrist and hold it there feeling his warmth spread though my aching body.

'Rose?' Robert says without moving his hand, I look at him again,

'What do you need to know' I croak

As Robert speaks I answer his questions. Then he helps me sit up, the sheet doesn't fall off me. I can tell he is almost done, but then,

'There is something you need to see' Robert says in a calm voice.

I expect to be getting up, but we don't.

I keep my eyes on Robert as he pulls back the sheet to my stomach, and I resist the urge to cross my hands over my bare breasts.

I gasp as I look down from Robert to my bare skin, because there branded onto it, with a purple bruise as a halo is the shape of a crescent moon and in the space between each point, a bolt of lightning.

Robert starts talking again but I just stare, is this what the lightning did when it hit me. When it healed me of being emotionless?

Then something Robert says as he pulls the sheet back over me catches my attention,

'...I have a scar just like it in the same place, you're not the only one Rose'

I just stare, then I say quietly,

'C-can I see?'

Heat rushes to my cheeks as I realise what I said, but Robert just nods and reaches behind his head. In one swift movement he pulls his shirt off and drops it to the floor. I look at him and my eyes follow down to his chest, there branded onto his skin is the same mark in the same place too. He takes my hand and touches it against his stomach, then he moves my hand up his chest and stops over his scar. Then with is free hand he lays his hand on the sheet over my scar,

'we are alright' he says in my ear.
