CHAPTER 5

It was cold, so cold in fact, I was shivering; the blankets barely covered my pajamas. But suddenly, I felt as though I was being watched. The manning eyes were unwavering, watching me as I tried to get back to sleep. My eyes flew open just as I felt the inspecting eyes grow intense. This feeling was very much like that of a stalker. I was facing the ceiling, but then I turned my head to the left and saw faint and familiar figures. I saw my study table, a pile of books that rested on top of it next to a lamp at the left side, and my ever-creaking chair.

Sitting up, I squinted in the direction of the window, just by my study table. I stared through the pane in a determined manner, straining my eyes as I searched for the pair of eyes that was watching me. Then suddenly the sensation waned, as if they fled because they had sensed me trying to find them. Though there was a lingering presence, I realized that I would not be able to find it, unless of course I left the house.

Being a suspicious person when it comes to odd things that aren't usually acknowledged or noticed by other people, I stood up and idly crawled to the window and opened it. I examined the forest further, eager to make sure that the probing eyes were distant enough for me to get back to sleep in peace. All I saw was hues of blackness, the cold breeze making ruffling sounds in the black void.

When I had looked long enough, I convinced myself that I was safe. Locking it, I closed the window and headed back to bed, drifting to a deep slumber.

I woke up having hazy mood. My senses seemed to be a bit clouded. I remembered the chill from early this morning, then immediately jumped up to examine the forest again. I gazed through the window pane and saw that everything looked normal. The tall trees that were about fifteen feet from my window were still green, and the grass was still the same tall type that had a few golden strands and a couple of dandelions mixed in with them. I didn't feel the pair of eyes anymore. They were completely gone. I sighed in relief.

I fell back into bed and gently shut my eyes, humming a random tune as I recalled what happened last night. I remembered Max. He was certainly weird. I haven't seen him with that much mixed emotions showing off through his eyes. He emitted them like it was necessary due to overflowing thoughts in his head. Was he that puzzled with Suzi? It was a cute name; although it could also be that he was reacting to a different matter altogether.

A sudden blast of strong odor crashed against my senses, completely throwing my previous thoughts away. It was a very sweet smell, almost hypnotizing me, making me dizzy. It was so sweet in fact that I felt like Gretel in the land of candies. My dizziness was soon overcome by cravings and desires.

I opened my eyes and stood up, checking the clock and finding that it was only seven o'clock in the morning. The sweet smell couldn't have come from Red cooking something in the kitchen as my bedroom door was closed, so no aroma could seep in from downstairs. Also, according to the time, Red would probably only be getting up from bed. Besides, his cooking would never give me a dizzying sensation.

Recalling the long night that we had, awake until eleven, I'm sure he still wanted to sleep in. But being the very responsible and caring brother-slash-man that he is, he would wake up right now and cook breakfast for everyone. When I said everyone, I meant me, Pops, and my three friends Jackie, Tanya, and Frannie. They called their parents last night and asked permission to sleep over. Max had left with Tom last night though. "Stacy might shout at me for being out this late. I wouldn't want her to think absurd things eh? Wouldn't want the kids to hear unnecessary arguments," Tom had said.

I then had an odd feeling, a question forming in my mind. Where did that smell come from? Smelling it further made me think of cavities. It was the first time I encountered that sweet and sugary aroma...or maybe not. Wait! It wasn't the first time!
