She smiled, "No problem, I couldn't let that dress get dirty." That made me scowl.
Changing the subject, I asked, "So when are we going to get to this party?" We had been tromping threw some thin woods for the past five minutes. The spider arms reaching toward the blackening sky gave a eerie look to the forest, making me shiver involuntarily.
"Few minutes," Ashley cheeped. We all looked at her.
"How can you do that?" Honor whispered.
Ashley looked confused. "Do what?" she asked in full volume.
"Shh!" We all sounded and huddled closer.
She gave us a weird look. "What's up with you guys?" Her voice echoed between the still trees.
"Just shut up," Morgan said, her eyes wide. "This is creepy." We nodded in agreement.
Suddenly we heard a crack. I grabbed someone's wrist and another person wrapped their arms around my waist. My heart was pounding in my ears as I slowly looked around the forest.
The trees now were only shadows in the darkness surrounding.
"Do you see something?"
"Where? Where?!"
"Over . . . wait no never mind."
"Are you sure?"
"I . . . I think so."
"Guys shut up!"
"You shut up!"
Another crack and we fell mute, shaking in our skin.
Suddenly an earsplitting scream exploded in the silence.
"Ahhh!" We all screamed. The voice of the perpetrator cracked, then began laughing.
"Ashley!" Courtney shouted, and I heard an audible whack.
"You guys," Ashley burst into another fit of giggles. "Should have . . ." more laughter. "Seen your - ow."
"What?" We gasped.
"I don't know, something just . . ."
"Hey!" I slapped my neck.
"Ouch," I heard Honor, and then we were being bombarded by rocks. We ducked for cover.
"Why the hell did you guys make me wear heels," I demanded through my teeth.
"Whoops." I heard. We darted around, trying to find cover for a few moments when abruptly, the onslaught stopped as quickly as it began. We looked up at the sudden quiet.
"Okay, this is creepy again," Courtney's voice could barely be heard.
Finally Ashley was whispering to, "You little twerps, you got me freaked out too!"
Silently we high-fived between ourselves at the little victory. Then Honor asked the question I'd been dreading,
"Where are we?"
We looked between each other, then at our surroundings.
"Umm . . ." Courtney trailed.
"Are we seriously lost?" Morgan whined.
I bit my lip. This wasn't supposed to happen.
"Uh oh." Ashley said.
"Big uh oh." Courtney echoed.
The silence pressed down on us like a thick woolen blanket. An owl hooted in the distance and we all jumped. Then silence once again.
"I'm kind of scared." Honor whispered.
"Me too." said Morgan. "Let's just -"
"RAWR!" Three shapes came sprinting out of the shadows.
Almost instantly the forest became alight with the sound of five screaming girls.
One of them shined a flashlight under his chin, casting his face in an evil glow.
"Wade!" Ashley shrieked and slapped him across the face. The other two boys, more of Wade's football croonies, fell to the forest floor in laughter. Wade rubbed his cheek, grimacing.
"Ever think about trying out for the boxing team?" He asked. She just glared at him.
"What are you doing?" She demanded.
Wade bowed low, "We have come to be your escorts to the ball, mademoiselles."
