Trigger Warning: suicidal thoughts

Virgil was gripping the railing of the balcony as he broke down into tears. Their little weekend vacation to the Imagination had been going fantastic for him, including several anxiety attacks, crying himself to sleep, and his feelings being revealed to Roman. His knuckles were white as he squeezed the metal tighter, hoping the others wouldn't find him.

His eyes opened a little, vision blurry from the tears as he looked at the ground far below. He could just jump... he could just give in to all the voices... end it all... would the others truly miss him? He'd been trying so hard to contain the darkness in him, but it was just taking over who he was. The perk of being the 'negative' trait... The darkness was destroying him from the inside out, and he was terrified it would take control of him. He was a monster...

"Virgil?"

His breathing stopped for a moment as he let out a sharp gasp. He recognized his voice, making his heart race and his stomach knot. Virgil's hands immediately shot up to wipe at his eyes and cheeks, desperate to make it look like he hadn't just been sobbing.

"Virgil, it's alright..." he said softly as he approached him. He didn't turn, making Roman look down sadly. "What you said wasn't true, by the way..."

The anxious Side let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head at the naiveness of the prince. "You don't get it, do you?" he asked him. "You were right about me. Everything you ever said about me was true."

"If that's the case," Roman said, frowning as he took another step. "I recall saying 'you make us better'. You're not the monster your brain is tricking you into thinking you are. I was wrong, and I know that now."

Virgil scoffed again, back still to the prince. "Princey, you have no idea what you're talking about," he muttered. "I've had darkness in me from the start. It's in the mind, just strong enough to seek me out. It searches for a host, and I, being the fake Side, the negative one, was the obvious choice. It's only a matter of time before I'm completely made of it."

He paused before continuing as though he wasn't there. "I just want to be free of it... but I know deep down I know I don't deserve to be... that I don't deserve to be loved..."

Roman was shaking his head, sadness and despair in his eyes. He needed to tell the anxious Side how he felt, that he returned his feelings. He took a breath, taking another step toward him. "No more talk of darkness," he sang softly, making Virgil freeze. "Forget these wide-eyed fears I'm here, nothing can harm you, my words will warm and calm you."

Virgil had turned around quickly, looking at him in shock as he sang. "Let me be your freedom, let daylight dry your tears. I'm here with you, beside you, to guard you and to guide you..."

The prince waited for a moment as Virgil looked up from the ground. To his shock, the anxious Side opened his mouth to respond. "Say you love me every waking moment, turn my head with talk of summertime... Say you need me with you now and always... Promise me that all you say is true..." he paused to open his eyes and meet Roman's. They were wide, looking at him as though he was his whole world. "That's all I ask of you."

"Let me be your shelter, let me be your light," the prince sang with a smile as he reached out to hold Virgil's hands in his own. The anxious Side looked up at him with glistening eyes. He held him close as he sang the next line. "You're safe, no one will find you, your fears are far behind you..."

"All I want is freedom, a world with no more night," Virgil replied before looking back at Roman, admitting his desire to be with him. "And you, always beside me, to hold me and to hide me..."

Roman pulled away to look at his face, raising a hand to hold his cheek gently. "Then say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime, let me lead you from your solitude. Say you need me with you here, beside you... anywhere you go, let me go too..." he paused, deciding to change the name to his. "Virgil, that's all I ask of you..."

Virgil bit his lip as the tears started flowing down his cheeks. There was shaky smile on his face as Roman pressed their foreheads together, brushing his thumb against his cheek.  "Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime."

"Say the word and I will follow you," they both sang, lost in the power of the song. This past weekend was meant to be peaceful and serene, but it had been rough on all of them, the two of them more so. They just wanted this moment to be just like you would imagine it to be. "Share each day with me, each night, each morning."

Virgil opened his eyes, looking up nervously. "Say you love me..."

Roman smiled at him, leaning in closer. "You know I do."
