Chapter 16 Graduation
Like I had guessed my mother was home. She was sleep in the living room with the tv on so I had to use my ninja skills to keep from getting caught.
Its been two weeks since that night at the Partridge House. Jade was now living with Koco. Iris sent her there so she could be watched not because of Krepsley but so Jade doesn’t drink human blood. I learned that Koco had been turned March 1, 2006 by Krepsley. Also that she hadn’t changed at all in appearance. She had always looked so vampire-ish.
Krepsley hadn’t been seen nor heard from since that day.
I started to spend almost every afternoon with Iris. That only caused Blake to say things like, “She wants you! All you have to do is seal the deal and you’re so in there.” It doesn’t help that she gets all flirty with me whenever Blake is around. I don’t know why she does it. She must just like to see me squirm.
During the two weeks I read more of the dairy. Iris found out that I was 37 in the middle of Feburary but followed me around for two months to make sure that I was the right person. It was kind of creepy thinking about how she did that without mw notcing. And the detailed notes she had on me didn’t erase the stalker vibe I was getting.
The most important thing that’s going on at the moment is that tomorrow morning I will be officially done with High School. Iris will be graduating too for the eighth time. She said the only reason why she goes is to see the happy hopeful faces she spent the year with. Moving on to bigger and better things.
“Al are you goin’ to spend all night scribbling away in some notebook?” Mira said standing in my doorway. It’s been a year and a half since the last time I saw her. She looks even more like mom than I remember. “Come on little brother everyone’s here for you.”
I got off my bed and place my Journal on the dresser. “So you haven’t told mom about your baby?”
“W-what?” She placed her hand on her stomach. “How did you…”
“It’s my job as a little brother to know things.” I smirked. Mirajane smiled too and hugged me.
“I’m so glad I moved out. I could never get away with anything with you around.” She squeezed me harder. “No I didn’t tell her. We’re here for you after all. I’ll tell her later.”
When we walked downstairs we found everyone in the living room. Mom, dad, and Dylan, Mira’s husband, were yelling at the game on tv. Susie was in the corner chair on my computer. This was my family, we were whole when Mirajane came back home. Everything was just brighter, happier, better when we were all together.
*********
“You ready man?” Blake asked me. Everyone was in their cap and gown, excited and ready for our march out onto the floor. People I barely spoke to where coming up to me asking if I was excited, saying that they would miss me, or hugging me.
Yeah. It’s finally over.” I answered him.
“Correction. It’s just beginning!” Jessie hugged me then went to Blake. “Our lives finally get to start after today. Go to college, do the whole graduation thing again, get a kick ass job, make a few million, get married.” She elbowed Blake in his side. “ Have two perfect kids, Charles and Maria. Then all that’s left is too grow old with my love traveling the world.”
“Wow. Blake it looks like she has your whole life planned out. Are there any decisions you make?” I asked trying hard to keep from laughing.
“I pick out my own underwear.”
“Now those are the big decisions in life.” Iris said giving me a hug. “Aleck can you do my thing.” She held out her cap. I took it and adjust on her head so it wouldn’t fall. I turned her tassel to the right side and she smiled.
“How bout you two get a room.” Jessie said and we all laughed.
Soon everything started. We got in line according to last name and marched out onto the floor. From the moment we sat down everything was a blur. Every speech sounded the same, long and drawn-out. Even the walk across the stage to get our diplomas was meshed together. I would have missed my turn if it wasn’t for the girl sitting next to me, Kristian Dugger. All the excitement I had in the elephant room was gone and I was ready for it to be over.
My biggest wish during the ceremony was that there weren’t so many people in our class.
As the list of names was called and A Zimmerman crossed the stage it was over.
Tassels were turned from the right to the left, caps flew up into the air, and cheers erupted everywhere.
The gradating class flooded out of the building and into the parking lot behind the Colosseum. People were taking photos and greeting their families. Flowers and balloons were everywhere.
“Hey Aleck!” Dylan called out to me. “They sent me into the lines of fire to get you. Who’s your friend?”
Only then did I notice that Iris was holding on to my hand. I knew that she hadn’t been there the whole time but I had no idea when she did.
“I’m Iris Partridge.” She smiled and winked at me.
“Iris where is your family?” Dylan asked as he led us throw the crowd.
“They didn’t come.” She answered. “But it’s not a big deal.” She added when he looked back at her.
“You’re a man now.” My dad said shaking my hand.
“There goes my baby all grown up!!” My mom screeched hugging me like I was the only thing keeping her alive.
“Mom there are people around.”
“So when are you moving out? I’ve made plans for that room.” Susie smiled then hugged me as well.
“Oh who is this lovely girl?” Before anyone could answer she was hugging her. I have no idea what had gotten into my mother. But thinking back she acted the same way when Mirajane graduated.
“Ma! Get a hold of yourself. Nobody’s dieing.” Mira said prying my mom’s arms off . Iris stood there wide eyed and a little scared.
“Iris my mother, mom this is Iris.” I managed to say while I was trying to keep from laughing at her face.
“Iris’s family didn’t come so I was thinking she could with us.” Dylan said looking at me expectantly like he was doing me a favor.
My mom was instantly beaming. She mouthed ‘She’s your girlfriend.’ I guess she really thought that Iris couldn’t see her. If my mom was a drunk it would be easier to explain her behavior. “Of course she can come. The more the merrier. There won’t be enough room in our car so you two will have to ride with Dylan and Mira.”
“Um…Iris.” We turned to find 35 standing there awkwardly with flowers. “Congrats.”

So Aleck is no longer in high school. The graduation experience is my own. It was soooo boring and I was ready to leave to go home, eat or something. For the song I was going to put the song they always play at graduations " Vitamin C's Friends forever" but that song is just not true at all. And then I found this song. That better pictures what leaving high school really means. The song isn't meant to make the chapter bitter or anything. But I just like it more. especial since I'm in that stage of life where I'm drifting about from my best friends from high school. Well I'm done talking.
Comments please. I care way more about them than votes. I would love to hear what you think about where the story is going. And what you think about the characters. You know all that good stuff. :)
