Chapter 3 I’m on a mission

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! My alarm clock cried.

I awoke to the sounds of my alarm clock. I had stayed up half the night reading a month into the diary. Her and her family had moved here two weeks before school started. She says she hates the first days of school so the must move a lot. Maybe one of her parents are in the military. Her handwriting is hand to read sometimes, her nines look like sevens and even zeros. Or maybe its just that my eyes were weak from staying up that late.

I got out of bed to do my morning routine. When I was getting dressed I tried picking out my best looking clothes. I had decided last night that I was going to find this girl before the school year was out and that only gave me two and a half weeks.

I gathered my things and headed downstairs. I caught dad on the way out. “Mornin’” I said heading towards the kitchen.

“Hey Aleck want me to give you a ride to school? I’m taking your sister.” Dad asked reaching for the car keys.

“Nah. Blake is gonna take me. Besides I haven’t eaten anything yet.”

“Alright.”  And we went our separate ways. Our relationship was stale. Me and him were never very close and him not being around that much didn’t help. I looked at my watch I didn’t have much time to eat but simply toast would hold me down ‘til lunch.

I heard a car horn that was coming from just in front of my house. I put down my toast and headed for the front living room. I pulled back my mother’s ugly mustard golden yellow curtains. I hate the color yellow. I found Blake’s car in the driveway.  I grabbed my bag and went out the door.

Blake’s car was his grandfather’s; he had left it to him when he died. It is a 1986 Toyota mr2. His father had gotten it fixed up for him. It was now a shiny cosmic black paint job with chrome rims. I got in the passenger seat.

“You look like a wreck.” He said as l slide in. “What happen?”

“I was up late reading.”

“Reading?” He shot me a look of confusion and disbelief. I only read books when I had to do it for class. He examined my tired eyes. “That girl’s diary?” He smirked. “You stayed up reading it?”

I stared at him. Then glanced over at the car’s clock, his eyes followed mine. “We’re going to be late to school.”

He pulled out of the driveway after a few more minutes when he gave up as to why I stayed up to read it. The radio was on but it was too low to really make out one song from another. We were half way to school before he spoke again.

“So…What it say?”

“I only got a month in.”

“Dude once you find this chick you are so in there.” He grinned. “A whole month? It only takes me about a week to learn the ins and outs about a girl. They like to talk and lucky you. You got her thoughts down on paper so you can bookmark it and pick it back up whenever you want. Hell you can even skip the boring parts.”

“What would Jessie have to say about that?”

“Jessie? I’m ninety percent sure that she would agree with me. Jessie is my perfect kind of girl and I swear one day I’m going to marry her.”

“You said you were going to marry Megan one day too.”

“Give me a break I was fourteen and she was my first girlfriend. I thought I loved her-”

“Awww that’s so sweet.” I batted my eyes then busted out laughing.

“Shut up!” He slammed on the breaks making me jerk forward and he laughed.

“That wasn’t funny!” We got out of the car. “I think I might have whiplash.”

“Serves you right.”

I rolled my eyes. “Blake are you going to help me find this girl?”

“Duh.”

“And make sure you keep this quite. I don’t want to sound like a stalker or anything.”

“Will do, I’m a man on a mission.” He saluted me.

We regrouped at lunchtime.

“So?”

“Nothing. I asked all the guys on the football team, swimming team, both JV and Varsity cheerleaders, all the people in my classes and even the teachers. Sorry man. What about you?”

“All I know is that she definitely goes here but when I was going to ask for her homeroom, old Mr. Krensly told Ms. Dotts that she couldn’t do that.”

“At least you got somewhere.”

“Yeah. You know I have had this weird feeling that someone has been watching me all day.”

“Hmmm, I …”

“Blaaaaaake!” someone sang from across the lunch room.

“Don’t say anything about this to her.” I warned Blake.

A girl with dirty blonde hair and sparkling blue-ish  green eyes walked up to our table and plotted herself right into Blake’s lap. Cupped his face and kissed him smack on the lips.

“Miss me?” She asked.

“You know I did Jessie.”

“Good! Cause I missed you too.” She kissed him again then turned to me. “I’ve missed you too Aleck.”

“I’m glad to see you’re back.” Jessie was out of school all last week because her mom was sick in the hospital. All she had was her mother and grandma. Now that her mother was doing better she came back to school.

“So what have I missed while I was out?”

“Um…Nothing much.”

“Expect Aleck here…”I flashed Blake a look. I told him just minutes before not to say anything. “Got himself detention for the rest of this week.” He smirked.

“What did you do?” Jessie asked seeming almost amused.

‘Nothing! Mrs. Hanson just hates me. That’s all.”

“Hmmm sucks for you. Well at least in couple  two more weeks we will be out of this Hell some like to call High School.” She said looking off into the distance.

The rest of the day I had asked just about everyone if they had any idea who this girl was. I came up empty.

After detection I walked home the back way through the woods and across the railroad tracks to clear my head. For the passed two days all I pretty much had on my mind was this girl, I didn’t even know. I give up.

When I get home I’ll just throw the diary away. I walked mindlessly down the dirt path until I smelled smoke. I sniffed the air, it was the smoke for a cigarette. I kept a lookout for other people, nobody ever really used this path anymore and if something where to happen to me this might be the last place anyone would look.

I continued down the path and turned around the bend leading to the railroad tracks. Turning the corner I saw a girl laying on the ground with her upper body across the tracks. At first I though she might be dead, but then she raised her hand to put the cigarette to her mouth.

She looked up at me and I froze. “Hey kid what time is it?”
